CHAPTER SEVEN: TORN IN-BETWEEN

1324 Words
The morning after the unsettling encounter at Harbor Books, Elena woke to a heavy sense of dread that seemed to hang over her like a storm cloud. Her phone lay next to her on the bed, but she didn’t touch it. Not yet. She wasn’t ready to face whatever was waiting for her, especially the message from an unknown number. She’d spent the night tossing and turning, her mind racing with a thousand questions. The message had been clear but cryptic: “Be careful who you trust.” Who could have sent it? And why now, after everything with Liam? Elena swung her legs over the side of the bed, her feet hitting the cold wooden floor. The room felt too quiet, almost as if the silence was pressing in on her, making it hard to breathe. She reached for her sketchpad, trying to distract herself the way she always did. But the lines and shapes on the paper didn’t come to life as they usually did. Instead, her hand trembled as she tried to draw. She put the pencil down with a sigh, her mind going back to Liam. It had been years since they’d been together, but his presence still had a way of shaking her, of pulling at something deep inside her that she thought had been buried. Her phone buzzed on the bedside table, pulling her from her thoughts. She picked it up, the message notification from an unknown number still staring at her. For a long moment, she hesitated before opening it. Her fingers hovered over the screen, but then she couldn’t help herself. She opened the message. “Is this what you want, Elena?” Her heart skipped a beat. Her palms felt clammy, and she swallowed hard, trying to make sense of the words. She scanned the number again. No name. Just a string of random digits. What did it mean? Was someone watching her? Was it someone from her past? The buzz of her phone in her hand almost felt like a warning, like something was about to happen that she couldn’t control. Before she could think more on it, a knock on her door startled her. She quickly stuffed her phone under her pillow and got up to answer. It was Maggie, her best friend since childhood, standing in the doorway with a wide grin on her face. “Hey! You up?” Maggie asked, pushing her way into the room without waiting for a response. “I was thinking we could grab breakfast at Bella’s. I could use a good cup of coffee after last night.” Elena smiled weakly, though it didn’t quite reach her eyes. Maggie didn’t seem to notice. She was always so bubbly, so full of life. It was one of the things Elena loved about her. “Sure, sounds good,” Elena replied, trying to shake off the anxiety that had been settling in her chest. Maggie flopped down on the bed, her legs crossed under her. “So, what happened with you and Liam yesterday? That was... something.” Elena hesitated. How could she explain everything that had been running through her mind? How could she put into words the strange mixture of old feelings and new confusion that had been swirling in her head since the moment Liam walked back into her life? “He’s... complicated,” Elena said finally, leaning back against the wall. Maggie arched an eyebrow. “That’s one way to put it. But you still have feelings for him, don’t you?” Elena was quiet for a long moment, the silence stretching between them. She wasn’t sure how to answer. There was so much she didn’t understand about what she felt for Liam. How could she explain that part of her wanted to pick up where they left off, while another part was terrified of falling into the same old patterns? “I don’t know,” Elena said at last, shaking her head. “I think... I think I’m just scared. It’s been years, Maggie. I’ve moved on, or at least I thought I had.” Maggie gave her a soft smile, one that spoke of understanding and years of friendship. “You don’t have to have all the answers right now. But just remember, you deserve someone who is all in. Not someone who’s still tangled up in his past.” The words hit Elena harder than she expected. She swallowed, feeling a lump in her throat. “I just don’t want to make the same mistakes,” she said quietly. “You won’t,” Maggie replied, her voice filled with confidence. “You’re smarter than that. But don’t shut yourself off from the possibility of something real, something good.” Elena took a deep breath. She didn’t have the answers, but she couldn’t let fear dictate her choices anymore. Maybe it was time to face the truth about Liam—and about herself. Later that morning, as they walked toward Bella’s Café, Elena couldn’t shake the feeling that something was off. She felt it in the air, like the calm before a storm. Her phone buzzed again, but she ignored it. Whatever was happening, she had to deal with it on her own terms. As they walked in, the warmth of the café’s interior wrapped around her. The cozy atmosphere was a welcome relief from the tension that had been building inside her. Maggie ordered their usual—coffee and croissants—and Elena did her best to relax, though her thoughts kept drifting back to the message, to Liam, to everything that felt like it was spiraling out of control. “I don’t get it, Elena,” Maggie said as they sat down at a window booth. “What exactly is it you’re scared of? You’re not the same person you were when you were with him. You’ve changed.” “I know,” Elena replied, taking a sip of her coffee. “But sometimes, it feels like the past has a way of catching up with you.” Maggie’s expression softened. “The past doesn’t control you unless you let it. And you don’t have to face it alone. You have me.” Elena smiled, grateful for her friend’s unwavering support. But as she looked out the window, her thoughts were interrupted by a figure standing outside the café, her breath catching in her throat. It was Liam. He was standing on the sidewalk, looking in through the window. Their eyes met, and for a moment, everything else faded away. He didn’t come inside, though. He just stood there, like he was waiting for something. Elena’s heart raced, and she could feel the weight of the decision pressing on her. Maggie noticed her sudden tension. “Elena? What’s going on?” Maggie asked, following her gaze. Elena didn’t answer immediately. She couldn’t. The words wouldn’t come. But deep down, she knew one thing was certain—she wasn’t ready to face whatever Liam had brought with him. --- By the time the day was winding down, Elena found herself walking back to her apartment alone. She couldn’t shake the feeling that Liam was lingering just beyond the edges of her life, like a shadow she couldn’t escape. But the messages, the strange text, and the uncertainty still weighed on her mind. The familiar hum of her phone broke the silence again, and Elena looked down at the screen. Another message from the same unknown number. “Stay away from him.” Her stomach twisted as she read the words, the chill of them settling deep in her bones. Who was sending these messages? And why? Elena felt like she was walking through a maze, unable to find her way out. And as much as she tried to push the thought from her mind, she couldn’t shake the feeling that something—someone—was out to get her. ---
