THE KINGS EMPIRE

The coffee was cold. Emma stared at the cup in her hands, watching the steam fade into nothing. She'd been sitting in the small café for twenty minutes, waiting for Bella to arrive. Her mind was elsewhere—on the hospital bills, on her mother's pale face, on the weight she carried every single day. "Sorry! Sorry! I'm so sorry!" Bella burst through the door, her blonde hair flying everywhere, her eyes wide with apology. She slid into the booth across from Emma, dropping her bag on the floor with a thud. "I'm late," Bella said breathlessly. "I know. I'm the worst. But there was a meeting, and my boss is a total nightmare, and—" "Bella." Emma held up a hand. "Breathe." Bella took a deep breath. Then another. Then she grinned. "Okay. I'm calm. I'm here." She flagged down the waiter. "Coffee. Black. And a pastry. Whatever's sweetest." The waiter nodded and disappeared. "Now," Bella said, turning to Emma. "Tell me you applied." Emma sighed. "I applied." Bella squealed. "YES!" "Don't get too excited. I applied. That doesn't mean I'll get the job." "You'll get the job. You're amazing. You're overqualified. You're—" "Desperate," Emma interrupted. "I'm desperate, Bella. That's the only reason I applied." Bella's smile faltered. "Emma. It's not desperate. It's smart. Kings Company pays well. The benefits are incredible. Your mom's medical bills—" "I know." Emma's voice was tight. "I know. That's why I did it." Bella reached across the table and took her hand. "I know this is hard. I know you hate it. But this is a good thing. A really good thing." Emma pulled her hand back. "Tell me about the company." "What do you want to know?" "Everything." Emma leaned forward. "Who founded it? Who runs it? Why is it so powerful?" Bella's eyes lit up. She loved gossip. She loved information. "Okay," she said, settling into her seat. "So. Kings Company was founded by Alexander King." "Alexander King," Emma repeated. "That name sounds familiar." "It should. He's the most powerful man in the city. Maybe the most powerful man in the country." Bella lowered her voice. "He's also the most dangerous." Emma frowned. "Dangerous how?" "Have you heard the rumors?" "Which ones?" "All of them." Bella leaned in. "They say he's not just a businessman. They say he's a mafia don. They say his money comes from drugs, weapons, and blood." Emma's stomach turned. "That's—" "It's probably true." Bella shrugged. "I mean, look at him. No one builds an empire like that without getting their hands dirty." Emma thought about it. A man who rose from nothing. A man who built an empire so powerful that even the police were afraid of him. A man who was more myth than reality. "What else?" Emma asked. "His background." Bella leaned back, reciting facts like she'd memorized them. "He was born poor. I mean, really poor. His father was a broke mechanic who married a beautiful woman way out of his league. She left them both when Alexander was seven. Ran off with a rich businessman." Emma's chest tightened. "She left him?" "Abandoned him. Completely. His father drank himself to death a few years later. Alexander was an orphan by fourteen." Emma felt a strange pang of sympathy. She knew what it was like to be abandoned. She knew what it was like to be left behind. "That's terrible," she said quietly. "Terrible. But also—" Bella hesitated. "It explains a lot, you know? The coldness. The walls. The way he never lets anyone in." Emma nodded slowly. "It does." "Anyway," Bella continued, "Alexander built Kings Company from nothing. Started small. A little manufacturing business. Then he expanded. Then he bought out his competitors. Now he owns half the city." "Half the city?" "Real estate. Tech. Transportation. Even the hospitals." Bella's voice dropped. "And the underground stuff. Drugs. Weapons. Money laundering. The whole thing." Emma felt sick. "And he just... gets away with it?" "He's untouchable, Emma. The police are afraid of him. The government is afraid of him. The only people who aren't afraid of him are the ones who are dead." Emma stared at her. "That's terrifying." "Terrifying and powerful. Which is why working for him is a good thing. He pays well. He treats his employees well—as long as they stay in line." "Is that a threat?" "It's a fact." Bella's eyes were serious. "If you take this job, you need to understand what you're getting into. Alexander King is not a man to be crossed." Emma was quiet for a long moment. She thought about her mother. About the bills. About the weight on her shoulders. She thought about the man who had built an empire on blood and power. A man who had been abandoned and left for dead. She thought about the danger. The risk. The consequences. And she made her decision. "I'll take the job," she said. Bella's face lit up. "Really?" "Really." Emma nodded. "I need the money. I need the benefits. I need to save my mother." "Emma—" "I know the risks. I know who he is. But I can't afford to be scared anymore." Emma met Bella's eyes. "I have to do this." --- They spent the next hour talking about Kings Company. Bella told her about the corporate culture. The rules. The expectations. The way employees were expected to be invisible—present, but unseen. "Don't make eye contact," Bella said. "Don't speak unless spoken to. Don't make waves." "Sounds like a prison." "Prisons have better food." Emma laughed despite herself. "Great. So I'm going to be working in a fancy prison." "You'll get used to it." Bella grinned. "And the paychecks? Worth it." --- That night, Emma sat in her small apartment, staring at the letter from the hospital. The final notice. If she didn't pay by the end of the month, they would stop her mother's treatment. She couldn't let that happen. She thought about Alexander King. The man who had built an empire on blood and power. The man who had been abandoned and left for dead. The man who was now the most powerful person in the city. She thought about the danger. The risk. The consequences. And she knew she had to take the job. She couldn't afford to be afraid anymore.
