The Deal

1353 Words
The bold headline blurred as tears threatened to form. ELDERLY BUSINESSMAN FOUND DEAD IN SUSPECTED ACCIDENT. Charles Whitmore. The last man who knew the truth. Gone. She slowly lowered the newspaper onto the dining table. The room had become unbearably quiet. Daniel stood beside her, his face drained of color. Adrian Blackwood remained motionless near the entrance, his expression as unreadable as ever. Yet behind those cold gray eyes was something Aurora hadn't noticed before. Frustration. Not fear. Not grief. Frustration. As though someone had made the first move before he had the chance. Aurora finally broke the silence. "...It wasn't an accident." "No." Adrian answered without hesitation. "It was an execution." Daniel looked between them. "You mean someone murdered him?" "They eliminated a witness," Adrian replied calmly. Aurora clenched the newspaper until it crumpled in her hands. "Who?" "If I knew..." Adrian's voice remained composed. "...he wouldn't still be alive." Twenty minutes later... The three of them sat inside Ellington Manor's library. Rain continued tapping softly against the tall windows. Daniel poured coffee into three cups, though no one seemed interested in drinking. Aurora folded her arms. "You said someone called you too." Adrian nodded once. "The same distorted voice." "What did they say?" "'Walk away from the Ellington family.'" Aurora frowned. "They're threatening both of us." "Exactly." She stared at him. "If this isn't about revenge between our families..." "What is it?" Adrian didn't answer immediately. Instead, he reached inside his coat and removed a sealed brown envelope. "I was going to wait." "But after Charles..." He slid it across the table. "You should know." Aurora hesitated before opening it. Inside were dozens of photographs. Some were old. Some were recent. One showed her entering Ellington Industries. Another showed Daniel leaving university. Another... Made her blood run cold. It was a photograph taken yesterday. She was standing outside St. Andrew's Retirement Home. Someone had been watching her. Every movement. Every meeting. Every step. Daniel slammed his hand against the table. "What the hell is this?" "Our surveillance team intercepted these yesterday." Adrian's tone remained steady. "They weren't taken by my people." Aurora slowly looked up. "So someone has been following my family..." "For months." Adrian corrected. "Not days." Months. The word echoed inside her mind. Who would spend months watching a bankrupt family? Unless... Money had never been the real objective. Aurora stood and walked toward the fireplace. "My father always told me something." She stared into the dying flames. "'When people chase your money, you can negotiate.'" She smiled bitterly. "'When they chase your silence...'" Her voice became barely audible. "...run." Adrian watched her carefully. "What else did he say?" Aurora looked at him. "'Trust no one who profits from your fear.'" Their eyes met. For the first time... Neither of them looked away. Later that evening... Adrian prepared to leave. As he reached the front door, Aurora spoke. "Wait." He turned. "I'll come with you." Daniel looked shocked. "Aurora..." She smiled reassuringly. "I'll be back." "No." Adrian interrupted. "You won't." Silence. Aurora frowned. "What?" "You can't stay here anymore." Daniel immediately stood. "What are you talking about?" Adrian walked toward the window overlooking the estate. "Ellington Manor has no security." "No surveillance." "No controlled access." "If they wanted Charles dead..." He looked back. "...they already know where Aurora sleeps." Daniel swallowed hard. "You think they'll come here?" "I think they're already watching." Aurora felt a chill travel down her spine. The curtains. The trees. The empty road outside. Had someone been observing them this entire time? An hour later... Aurora packed a small suitcase. Not because she had accepted Adrian's proposal. Because staying had become dangerous. Daniel hugged her tightly. "I don't like this." "Neither do I." "When will I see you?" She smiled. "Soon." "You promise?" "I promise." As she walked toward Adrian's car, she looked back at the only home she had ever known. The lights inside the manor glowed warmly against the rain. It didn't feel like home anymore. It felt like a target. The black Rolls-Royce moved silently through Manhattan. Neither of them spoke for nearly fifteen minutes. Finally Aurora broke the silence. "Why me?" Adrian kept his eyes on the road ahead. "You've asked that before." "And you never answered." Another silence. Then "Because you're stronger than you think." Aurora laughed softly. "You barely know me." "I know enough." "You've lost almost everything." "But you still protect everyone else before yourself." She looked out the window. "You investigated me." "I observed you." "Same difference." "No." His voice softened almost imperceptibly. "Observation tells me who you are." "Investigation only tells me what you've done." Aurora didn't know how to respond. For someone so cold... His words carried unexpected warmth. Forty minutes later... The car entered a private road lined with towering oak trees. At the end stood an enormous estate surrounded by iron gates. Blackwood Mansion. It looked less like a home and more like a fortress. Security guards opened the gates immediately. As the car stopped, Aurora stepped outside. The mansion was breathtaking. Elegant. Timeless. And strangely... Lonely. Inside, dozens of staff members stood in perfect formation. Every servant bowed. "Welcome home, Mr. Blackwood." Then they turned toward Aurora. "Good evening, Miss Ellington." The words sounded oddly distant. She wasn't home. She was a guest. Perhaps even a prisoner. Adrian led her upstairs. "This room is yours." It overlooked the gardens. Everything had already been prepared. Fresh flowers. New clothes. Even books arranged neatly on the shelves. Aurora turned toward him. "You planned this." "I prepare for possibilities." She sighed. "Again with that answer." "It's the truth." She sat on the edge of the bed. "I still haven't accepted your proposal." "I know." "Then why am I here?" Adrian remained silent for several seconds. When he finally spoke... His voice was lower than before. "Because if you stayed at Ellington Manor tonight..." He paused. "...I don't believe you would still be alive tomorrow." The room fell silent. Aurora searched his face. There was no arrogance. No manipulation. Only certainty. For the first time... She believed him. The next morning... Aurora awoke to the sound of birds outside the balcony. For a brief moment, everything felt peaceful. Then she remembered where she was. A knock sounded at the door. "Come in." A maid entered carrying breakfast. "Mr. Blackwood requests your presence in the study." Aurora nodded. Ten minutes later... She entered Adrian's private office. He stood beside the fireplace, dressed impeccably in a charcoal suit. Without saying a word... He placed the marriage contract on the desk. Beside it... A fountain pen. "I've rewritten several clauses." Aurora looked through the pages. Daniel would receive lifetime financial protection. Ellington Industries would remain under her ownership. She would retain complete financial independence. No clause required them to pretend in private. She slowly looked up. "You changed them." "You were right." "Marriage built on control never lasts." Aurora felt something shift inside her. Perhaps... For the first time... Adrian Blackwood wasn't negotiating. He was compromising. He stepped closer. "I won't force your decision." "But I need your answer." Aurora looked down at the contract. Then toward the window. Then back at Adrian. The silence stretched between them. Finally... She picked up the pen. Adrian's eyes followed the movement. Aurora uncapped it slowly. "I have one condition." Adrian raised an eyebrow. "I'm listening." She met his gaze with unwavering determination. "If we're doing this..." "...we uncover the truth together." For the first time since they met... A genuine smile appeared on Adrian Blackwood's face. Small. Subtle. But undeniably real. He extended his hand. Aurora looked at it for a long moment. Then... She shook it. "Deal." Outside the mansion, hidden among the trees beyond the estate walls, a figure lowered a pair of binoculars. A phone call was placed. "The contract is about to be signed." A cold voice answered from the other end. "Then begin Phase Two." The call ended. Inside Blackwood Mansion... Neither Adrian nor Aurora realized that their agreement had just accelerated a conspiracy that had been twenty years in the making. End of Episode 5
