CHAPTER FIVE “I don’t like the looks of this town,” Carly heard her partner mutter. The town of Harmonium had just come into view across the Lenawha River. In the deepening gray twilight, Carly saw that the town appeared to be a jumble of dark buildings punctuated by weak spots of light. I don’t like the looks of it either, she thought as they took a bridge across the river. A bad smell crept up from the water, prompting both of them to shut their windows. The bridge took them above the city’s waterfront, where a mile or so of dimly-lit factory buildings stretched out below them. The plant appeared to have been abandoned years ago, and the buildings looked desolate and empty. Then their route took them through Harmonium’s downtown area, which looked all but dead, with little traffic,
