CHAPTER 5

1073 Words
Aaron Caine, the Alpha King of Moonshroud, gazed at the woman in the black dress as she scurried her way gracefully through the crowd. He was in a daze and when he managed to shake himself out of it, he hurried after her. That was his mate and he couldn’t let her get away. “Your Majesty!” He heard people calling after him, but he paid them no mind as he rushed out of the ballroom. Once outside, his eyes darted around the area, but there was no sign of her. He hurried around, looking a bit farther, but there was still nothing. She had just completely disappeared. He stood, placing his hand on his chin, deep in thought. Did he imagine her? Was that woman real? How could she have just disappeared into thin air? He quickly shook his head, discarding those thoughts. She was real. She had to be. He clearly felt the pull of the mate bond. He also felt the touch of her smooth skin and the softness of her lips. His heart began racing faster in his chest once he thought of her lips. He wanted to see her again. To touch her. To taste her. And her eyes. Those piercing silver-gray eyes. They evoked so many emotions inside him. And also, why did those eyes remind him of something very important? Why did they seem so familiar? “Your Majesty,” His beta’s voice cut through his myriad of thoughts, jolting him out of his reverie. “It’s time for your speech,” Aaron blinked, his eyes darting around the area one last time. “Is everything okay?” His beta asked, concern evident in his voice. “Yes. Yes. Thank you, Marcus. Everything is fine,” Aaron answered, finally turning to his beta. “Let’s go.” The two men made their way back into the ballroom where the crowd was already waiting for the king’s speech. Aaron walked to the podium amidst cheers, delivering his speech and closing the ball. When the event was over, Aaron made his way to the entrance, surrounded by soldiers, guards and his entourages. Ava caught up with him, linking her arm with his. He instantly flashed her a small smile, patting her arm gently. He adored his sister so much and he could kill anyone that did as little as look at her the wrong way. “Are you okay?” Ava asked through her teeth as she was still smiling and waving at the crowd. “What do you mean? Of course I’m okay.” He replied, shooting up a brow. “No, you’re not. You can fool everyone else but not me. I saw you dancing with some woman in a black dress. You’ve not been yourself since then.” Aaron let out a loud sigh. He wanted to run his fingers through his hair but he soon remembered the crown which sat atop his head. Ava knew him too well and sometimes, it felt more like a curse than a blessing. It was hard to hide anything from her. “I’m fine.” He answered, trying to sound as convincing as possible, but he knew his sister was not buying it. *** Once Raven reached her room, she began pacing up and down, different thoughts rushing in and out of her head. She was spiraling and it was all because of one man. Aaron Caine. Her wolf howled and thrashed inside her, pleading for her to go back to her mate and Raven wouldn’t lie. Her wolf wasn’t the only one who wanted that. She wanted it to, but she had no choice but to control herself. The only reason she would go back to that man was to kill him. Raven spent the next few days stalking Aaron in the shadows and watching his every move. She was a skilled assassin. The third best in the Guild of Shadows and of course, it was easy for her to move around undetected despite the huge amount of security around him. She got all the information she needed about Aaron and she finally figured out when he was most vulnerable and the right time to strike. When the right time came, she clutched her favorite dagger in her hand and noiselessly made her way through the dark corridors. She did most of her killings in the dark and the fact that it was a little difficult to see did not bother her. Two guards were stationed in front of Aaron’s chambers and Raven quietly knocked them out without even breaking a sweat. She shook her head looking down at their limp bodies. “How weak.” She scoffed, her eyes darting around the corridor. She pulled out a pin from her hair and quickly unlocked the door, quietly slipping into the king’s chambers. She had no time to admire how beautiful the chamber was. She tiptoed through the chamber and when she got to his bedroom, she turned the knob, slipping inside. She was unsurprised to see that he was already asleep. “Perfect.” She grinned, her body trembling with excitement as she tiptoed towards the bed, envisioning all the things she would do to Aaron. She would torture him and make him cough out the names of all the men that had murdered her family and when she was done, she would kill him slowly and painfully. Her grin turned feral as she crawled on the bed, placing the dagger over his throat. For a moment, Raven’s body froze as she gazed at Aaron. This was the first time she would see him up close without a mask and he simply looked ethereal beneath the moonlight which streamed in from the windows. His blonde hair fell in ringlets over his forehead and she was tempted to push the strands away from his angelic face. His skin was so pale and flawless and his pink lips were slightly parted as though inviting her. Raven could not move. She could only stare at him, completely bewitched by him. Suddenly, those steel blue and hazel eyes slowly fluttered open. Raven was instantly taken aback because he looked unsurprised to see her. There was no hint of panic or fear in those eyes. “I’ve been waiting for you.” He said and Raven couldn’t hide the look of surprise which instantly made its way onto her face.
