SHADOWS FROM THE PAST

401 Words
Lyra's anxiety swirled like a tempest as she stood outside the AnimeCon venue, her art displayed proudly on the walls. The neon lights danced across the crowds, but Lyra's mind was a thousand miles away. Zephyr's hand on her shoulder was a comforting presence, yet it couldn't shake off the feeling of unease. As they walked through the throngs of enthusiasts, a voice cut through the noise like a whispered secret. "Lyra?" Lyra's heart skipped a beat. She turned to face a girl with piercing green eyes, her face eerily familiar. "Ava?" The name was a relic of a past she'd tried to outrun. Ava's smile was hesitant, a shadow of the carefree girl Lyra once knew. "It's been a while." The words hung in the air, heavy with unspoken questions. Lyra's mind reeled. Ava was her childhood best friend, the one person she'd left behind when her family moved. The memories flooded back: laughter-filled afternoons, tears shed under starry skies, secrets shared like whispered prayers. Zephyr sensed the tension, his eyes narrowing slightly. "Lyra, who is this?" Lyra's voice was barely above a whisper. "Ava, from my past." The words were a fragile thread, connecting her to a life she'd tried to leave behind. Ava's gaze lingered on Zephyr before returning to Lyra. "I saw your art online. You're incredibly talented." The admiration in her voice was genuine, but Lyra detected an undercurrent – a probing, a searching. Lyra's parents, her mom a teacher at the local school and her dad a janitor at the community center, would be worried if they saw her art online. They'd always wanted her to focus on her studies, to have a "stable" future. The conversation was stitched with awkwardness, old wounds resurfacing like scars. Lyra hadn't told Zephyr about her past, about the mistakes she'd made. Ava, it seemed, held the keys to secrets Lyra wanted buried. As they parted ways, Ava slipped Lyra a piece of paper. "Let's catch up. We have a lot to talk about." The words were a promise, a threat, a whispered warning. Lyra's heart sank like a stone in water. What did Ava want? And what secrets would she reveal? The night air was heavy with possibilities, the city's sounds a distant hum as Lyra's past and present collided. She felt the weight of Zephyr's gaze, his eyes asking questions she wasn't ready to answer. Not yet.
