Annabelle's pov.
“I did everything you wanted me to, when will my sister's treatment commence?” I asked, coming out of the bathroom again. I had gone to wash my face due to the kiss earlier. I did not like it one bit.
“If you were rightly informed, you'd understand that the medicine is still being tested.” He answered and my brows furrowed in annoyance.
“So what are you saying? That everything I did was in vain? How could you possibly take advantage of me like this!?” I flared up but he was unnecessarily calm which I loathed.
“Sometimes you make me doubt if you're really as smart as I thought.” He scoffed.
He thinks I'm smart? Oh gosh.. why did that make my heart skip?
“The medicine is being tested, it's definitely going to be available soon.”
“How soon?”
“Three weeks tops.”
I let out a sigh and went to grab my purse. His eyes didn't leave me for one minute. Just yesterday, he wouldn't even look at me, but now he won't stop staring. I don't know what he's thinking, if he thinks that kiss means anything then he has another thing coming. Such a p*****t.
“If there's nothing else, I'll be taking my leave now.” I cleared my throat.
“Sure.”
Is that all he has to say? We're married now, technically. So what happens now? I'm honestly so confused, but I can't ask him because I know he won't give me a reasonable explanation.
“Bye then.” I rolled my eyes and left his office. He can do whatever he wishes, I don't care. All I want is for Esther to be treated. I can't wait for three weeks when the testing will be completed.
I got home and met Esther in the living room, she didn't recognize my presence until I came to stand in front of her.
“Hi sis.” I smiled warmly at her.
“Oh.. Annabelle. Where have you been all morning?” She questioned and I sighed.
What do I say to her? I possibly can't tell her about my deal with that arrogant and heartless man, Steve. If she gets to know that I practically sold myself for her treatment, she will do everything possible to stop me from going ahead with it. I mean, she hid her sickness from me simply because she thought she didn't want to be a burden to me.
“Well, I've been job hunting. I have to take care of you and get some things we need around the house.” I answered and she sniffed, already shedding tears which I didn't like.
I leaned over to wipe her tears, placing a soft kiss on her forehead.
“Don't cry, please.”
“How can I not cry? All I do is create problems for you. I need wanted to be a burden to you, but I can't escape it now.” She continued to wail, moving me to tears as well.
“Can you please stop? I'm working hard to find a cure for you, very soon, you'll be on your feet again. You'll live longer than a year.” I sniffed.
“Don't give me hope, we both know there's no cure for me. I'm doomed.”
“Esther!”
“I'm sorry…” she pulled me into a hug.
“Don't say anything anymore. Have you had anything to eat?” I broke away from the hug, wiping my tears and hers as well. She slowly shook her head.
“I'll go to the kitchen and see what I can put together.” I bit my lip, walking into the kitchen.
All the cabinets and drawers were empty, the fridge was dry and empty as well. There was no sign of food and it made my heart bleed. What am I supposed to do now?
At this rate, Esther will starve to death even before the cancer gets the chance to kill her.
“What do I do now?” I stared at the empty fridge, at the brink of tears.
Suddenly, Steve came to mind. He's my husband now, so I can ask him for money, right? Having no other choice, I picked up my phone and called his secretary. I didn't have his number yet.
“Alexia from Malcolm inc, how can I help you?”
She always sounds like an automated bot.
“Um.. it's Annabelle, I want to speak to Steve, please.” I mumbled.
“Oh, please hold. I'm transferring you to his line now.” She replied and a beep followed before I heard Steve's deep baritone voice.
“Hi smarty pants.” He snickered.
Suddenly, I was tongue tied. I couldn't say a word to him. This is so low of me, how could I even think of begging him for money? We might be legally married but I can't let my self respect go just like that. He'll never let me hear the end of it!
“Have you suddenly gone dumb? Say something, I don't have all day.” He growled.
“It's nothing, sorry.” I wanted to hang up when he started speaking.
“You want money, don't you?” He chuckled.
“No, I..”
“It's fine, you have the right to ask me for money. I'm your husband after all.”
I don't know why everything that comes out of his mouth sounds like mockery. I can imagine the dirty grin on his face right now and it made me mad.
“No, you don't have to worry. I didn't call you for money.” I said and hung up immediately before he could get the chance to make fun of me again.
“Who were you speaking to?” Esther startled me. She was standing by the door, a look of concern on her face.
“No one.”
“Really? Then why do you look so uneasy?” She pointed out, moving closer to where I was standing. I feigned a smile quickly, refusing to give her any room to suspect a thing.
“I'm fine sis, you can go back and watch tv, I'll find something for us to eat.” I said to her and she tried to speak but we were both distracted when the doorbell rang.
I thought it was Heather, she's the only one that ever visits us.
“I'll go check.” I hastily made my way to the front door.
My eyes almost popped out of their sockets when I opened the door and saw who was standing in front of me.
“My lovely wife, I've come to take you home!”
