Chapter 10: The Rising Threat

1201 Words
The moon hovered low over the palace, casting silvery shadows across the long, winding corridors of the Alpha's estate. Servants moved in whispers, guards patrolled in tense silence, and the air was thick with uncertainty. Alpha Kael was still missing. In the absence of their king, the estate had begun to fall into a quiet kind of chaos. The high council convened more often, murmuring behind closed doors. The guards had doubled shifts, combing through every inch of the palace grounds and surrounding woods in search of him. But there was no trace. Meanwhile, Lyra remained inside the ancient stone castle, unaware of the storm building around her. She had barely seen anyone since the Alpha's disappearance. The only contact she had was with the guards assigned to her—none of whom would speak much, save for short, polite exchanges. She spent her days wandering the empty halls of the king's wing, her nights sleepless and filled with strange dreams—visions of Kael, of his eyes watching her, his voice echoing in her ears. She didn't know what any of it meant, but her heart ached with a longing she couldn’t explain. Far from her, in the inner chambers of the estate, something far more dangerous was unraveling. --- The spy from the rival pack, posing as a palace servant, stood before a secret council of shadowed figures cloaked in long robes. Their faces remained unseen, but the weight of their authority was palpable. The room smelled of burning sage and wolfbane. "Are you certain of what you've discovered?" one of the cloaked figures asked. The spy nodded. "Yes. The girl—Lyra—is more than a guest. She's his mate." The room stirred. The information, though expected by some, sent a ripple through the room. "And what of Kael? Has he returned?" "No. The king remains absent. But his disappearance coincides with the arrival of the girl. Her presence is not ordinary. I’ve witnessed how the palace protects her—even in his absence. The guards have orders to shield her." A long silence followed. Then a gravelly voice broke the stillness. "If she is his mate, and he is truly a True Alpha, then we cannot allow their bond to be completed." Another figure leaned forward. "If Kael binds to her fully, he becomes unstoppable. A threat to every rival pack across the lands. A True Alpha, bonded with his fated mate… no creature on this earth will rival him." "Then we must kill the girl," another hissed. The decision hung in the air, sinister and heavy. --- Back in the palace, the estate physicians had secretly begun testing Lyra’s scent traces, analyzing her aura, her blood samples taken quietly through enchanted items placed around her quarters. What they found terrified them. Lyra’s blood was powerful—ancient. It could heal at a supernatural rate. It shimmered in vials, reacting to magic in ways no normal wolf blood should. And worse—if her blood were to combine with Kael’s in the sacred rite of mating, it would awaken a force in him even the council couldn’t comprehend. They kept this from her, of course. For her safety—or so they told themselves. But the truth was more complex. Some wanted to protect her. Others feared her. And then there were those who were already working with Kael’s enemies—those who would see Lyra eliminated before her bond could be completed. One council member, Elder Thorne, had already sent out coded messages to the far reaches of the werewolf territories. Messages that would stir old alliances… and wake up ancient grudges. --- In her chambers, Lyra stared out the arched window that overlooked the vast, misty woods. The silence was unbearable. Not just the quiet of the castle, but the silence within her heart. She had begun to feel something for Kael, though she wouldn’t say it aloud. A pull, a magnetic draw she couldn’t name. And now, with him gone, it felt like a hole had opened in her chest. She often traced her fingers along the stone walls, thinking about the way he had looked at her—not with pity or suspicion, but as if she were something familiar, yet extraordinary. She didn’t know what she meant to him. She didn’t even know what she was to herself anymore. --- Elsewhere in the palace, the spy continued to send messages through enchanted ravens and whisper scrolls. The rival pack—known as the Red Ash Pack—was already gathering. They had long feared Kael’s dominance in the North, and now, with the possibility of him becoming the most powerful Alpha in the world, they were preparing for war. Their leaders had one goal: to end the bond before it could be forged. But Lyra wasn’t an easy target. The guards—especially a young warrior named Soren—had begun to suspect something was wrong. Soren was assigned to protect Lyra, but he noticed inconsistencies in reports, strange shifts in the behavior of some palace staff, and murmurs of orders that hadn’t come from any known official. One night, Soren approached her. "My lady," he said cautiously, bowing slightly. "I don’t mean to alarm you, but… be careful who you trust. Not everyone here is who they say they are." Lyra looked at him, confused. "What do you mean?" "Just… stay in your quarters at night. Don’t wander alone. Please." It was the first time anyone had spoken to her with genuine concern since Kael left. Her heart pounded as she nodded, unsure of what he truly knew. --- In the days that followed, Lyra began noticing the tension. The guards were tighter around her rooms. She wasn’t allowed to visit the garden anymore. Her meals were tested before being brought in. Whispers followed her down the halls. Something was happening. She wasn’t just a guest. She was a threat—or perhaps, a treasure—depending on who you asked. But she had no idea why. She didn’t know about the tests. She didn’t know about her blood. She didn’t know about Kael’s true nature. And she certainly didn’t know that her life was now the single thread that held the fate of kingdoms in balance. --- Deep in the rival pack’s territory, a war table had been set. Maps of the Alpha estate stretched across oak, dotted with red markers. A female warrior named Marla, one of the Devils’ top assassins, was given the mission. "We don’t want Kael dead," said the Red Ash leader. "Not yet. If we kill him, another Alpha may rise. But the girl… she’s the key. Remove her, and he’s weakened. Forever." Marla smirked. "Then I’ll bring back her heart." --- Back in the palace, Lyra woke with a start. A dream again. Kael’s voice. His touch. His pain. Her breath was shallow, her heart pounding. She didn’t know that beyond the walls, a war had already begun. And at the center of it all—unaware, vulnerable, and yet utterly powerful—was her. Lyra. The True Mate of the True Alpha. And everyone wanted her blood. --- END OF CHAPTER 10---
