The rain poured relentlessly, drenching the city streets and casting a shimmering veil over the city lights. Ginevra sat in the back of the taxi, peering out through the misted window as droplets raced down the glass. But when the cab finally came to a stop outside her apartment building, the rain had subsided compared to when it started.
Ginevra reached for her umbrella, a vibrant burst of color in contrast to the gray surroundings, and opened the door, stepping out onto the wet pavement.
She closed the door behind her and turned to face the taxi driver, her hazel eyes sparkling with gratitude. "Thank you so much," she said, her voice carrying a note of warmth. "Stay safe out here in the rain."
The driver nodded, his face barely visible beneath his cap and the hood of his raincoat. "You're welcome, miss," he replied, his voice muffled. "Have a good night."
As the taxi pulled away, its tail lights fading into the distance, Ginevra took a moment to gather herself. The rain continued to fall, albeit mildly. She adjusted the strap of her bag on her shoulder and turned towards the entrance of her apartment building.
And there, leaning against his sleek black car, stood Gerardo. The droplets of rain kissed his rugged features, and his dark hair glistened with moisture. He pushed himself off the car and straightened, his intense gaze fixed upon Ginevra.
A subtle surprise flickered across her face, they just keep showing up unannounced and uninvited and she wondered when all this would end. Leandro was a bit understandable since she works for him, but Gerado, only heaven knows what exactly he is after.
Being in front of her apartment wasn't the right choice he made, but she was grateful that Leandro wasn't in town. Or perhaps he already knew that too before deciding to show his presence this close.
Confusion tinged her expression as she approached, watching him cautiously yet curiously as she drew nearer, and a low, knowing smile spread across Gerardo’s lips as he watched her approach.
The sound of a passing car momentarily filled the air as Ginevra neared him, watching him uncertainly yet continuously. With a foot of distance remaining, she paused, unsure of how to interpret the situation.
“Quite an appearance you've got, Gerardo," she said, her voice laced with confusion and a bit of intrigue.
“I've missed you," Gerardo whispered, his voice a tender caress against the rain-soaked air.
Ginevra couldn't help but feel a sudden warmth spreading across her cheeks, an unexpected blush that betrayed her composure for a fleeting moment.
She may have forgotten the way he talks for a while now.
“You have quite the way with words, don't you?" she remarked, a hint of amusement in her tone. "Do you honestly think that saying those words would have any effect on me?"
Ginevra's gaze met Gerardo's, searching for any sign of sincerity amidst the enigmatic facade he often wore. It was always the men with sweet words. Words women like her wish to hear.
There has always been a cunningness to him, a skillful manipulation of wording that she couldn't help but acknowledge.
"But I suppose that's part of your charm, isn't it?" she added, a wry smile playing at the corners of her lips. "Always keeping me guessing, never revealing your true intentions."
“I suppose my intentions are clear," Gerardo responded, his voice carrying a hint of conclusion. He took a barely perceptible step forward, closing the physical gap between them.
Ginevra, feeling a mix of apprehension and frustration, met his gaze with a resolute expression. "Well, you should find another target," she stated firmly, her voice tinged with a touch of defiance. "I'm rather occupied at the moment, and your games won't sway me."
She turned to walk away, “Have a good night, Mr. Gerardo.” She said, already putting some distance between them. However, before she could take more than a few steps, Gerardo's voice halted her in her tracks.
"No, you're not," he stated, his voice carrying an unexpected depth of seriousness. The firmness in his tone resonated through her mind, causing her to pause.
Ginevra hesitated, her back still turned to him. The conflicting emotions within her churned, and curiosity tugged at her. Reluctantly, she turned to face him again, a mixture of defiance and intrigue in her eyes.
"What do you mean?" she asked, her voice softer now, betraying her lingering curiosity.
But Gerardo’s tone came nonchalantly, yet laced with a hint of curiousness. "Tell me,” He says. “...is that necklace you're wearing a gift from Leandro?" he asked, his question seemingly out of the blue.
Ginevra's steps faltered as she turned to face Gerardo. The rain had subsided, leaving a sense of calm in the air, but her mind was now filled with a flurry of thoughts. A mix of surprise and confusion filled her eyes as she questioned why he would ask about the necklace. Her mind raced, trying to understand the significance behind his inquiry.
"Why do you ask?" she responded, her voice tinged with uncertainty. The sudden question left her wondering how he even knew about the necklace.
Gerardo held her gaze, a flicker of recognition in his eyes. "It looks... or perhaps it is the exact same necklace I remember Leandro giving to someone I know very well," he revealed, his words hanging in the air.
Ginevra's heart skipped a beat, and her breath caught in her throat. The implications of Gerardo's statement washed over her, stirring a wave of emotions she struggled to contain.
Ginevra took a breath, steadying herself as she looked directly into Gerardo's eyes. She spoke with a firm yet composed voice, asserting her boundaries.
"I think it's best if you leave," she said, her words carrying a subtle but unwavering authority. With that, she turned on her heel and began to walk away, her steps measured and quick.
As Ginevra distanced herself, Gerardo's voice again cut through the air, causing her to pause without turning back. "Have you seen the picture of his late wife?" he asked, his words carrying a weight of curiosity, more like he wanted to know if she knew about it all along. "You look exactly like her. I don't know what's going on between you two, but he is using you, Ginevra.”
Ginevra remained silent, her emotions stirring within her. His words struck a chord, adding another layer of confusion to the already tangled web of her feelings. However, she refused to let his words sway her or break her resolve.
“Good night, Gerardo.” She said firmly and with no backward glance, she continued walking, pushing to distance herself from Gerardo and the unsettling truths he had brought to light.
There were answers she sought, but she knew she had to find them on her own terms, independent of his influence.
Ginevra arrived into her apartment, her mind filled with a whirlwind of thoughts. Setting her belongings aside, she moved straight for her bedroom. She knew she needed to find some answers. Something that would explain Gerardo’s words.
Sitting on her bed, she reached for her laptop and powered it on. But as she waited for it to boot up, anticipation mixed with apprehension coursed through her veins, they were a lot of things she didn't know about Leandro and the thought of his late wife haven't been a topic for her—not like it had mattered until now.
She opened a search and typed in the name of Leandro's late wife, hoping to find some clarity, some semblance of truth and the internet always bears information like this.
However, to her dismay, the search results displayed only blurred and distant photographs. The images were frustratingly elusive, failing to offer any definitive proof or a clear picture of Leandro's past. Ginevra's brows furrowed, and a sense of unease settled within her.
Feeling the weight of uncertainty bearing down on her, Ginevra glanced around her room, her gaze drifting over the familiar objects that filled her space. And then her eyes rested on Leandro’s coat by the corner, hung like a displayed art.
The walls seemed to close in on her, the silence amplifying her inner turmoil. And just as her eyes fell on her phone, she reached for it.
Her team must have some insight into the situation, and the person she had in mind to call was none other than Dario, her trusted partner. She knew he would provide the clarity she desperately sought.
As the phone rang, Ginevra held her breath, her heart pounding in her chest. The line connected, and Dario's voice filled her ears, a bit surprise. It was understandable since she doesn't call this regular.
"Hey Gin.”
Taking a moment to steady her voice, Ginevra replied, "Hey Dario,” She said calmly. “Uhm... Is there something you're not telling me?”
“Hey, what's going on?" Dario asked, his tone tinged with hesitation. "Why are you bringing this up all of a sudden?"
“Tell me, is there something I need to know, and I don't?” She stretched out, making her question more apparent.
“About what exactly?”
“I need to know, Dario, why I was chosen to investigate Leandro. Is there something you're not telling me?"
There was a brief pause on the other end of the line before Dario let out a sigh.
Frustration and urgency welled up within Ginevra, threatening to burst forth. She could no longer contain her emotions, her need for answers.
"Dario, I need you to answer me!" she almost yelled, her voice quivering with intensity. "Why was I chosen to investigate Leandro? Tell me the truth!"
There was a moment of silence on the other end of the line, and Ginevra could almost feel the weight of Dario's thoughts. Finally, his voice came through, lightly laced with regret and uncertainty.
"I was told not to tell you, Ginevra," Dario admitted, his tone filled with remorse. "But there were whispers among the team about the resemblance between you and Leandro's late wife. The captain thought it could give us an advantage, that Leandro might let his guard down around you."
Ginevra's breath caught in her throat, many emotions welled in her—shock, anger, hurt... She struggled to find her voice, but the words caught in her chest before finally erupting.
"You were asked not to tell me?!" she exclaimed, her voice trembled, her frustration and betrayal of the situation mounting on her. "How could you keep something like this from me? How could you! You of all people knows I deserved to know the truth from the start!"
The line fell silent once again, the weight of the revelation hanging heavily between them. Ginevra's mind raced with a whirlwind of emotions, unsure of how to process the tangled web of lies and deceit that had been woven around her.
“I'm sorry, Ginevra. We thought we were doing the right thing. I didn't expect it to affect you this deeply."
Unable to respond, Ginevra felt a lump forming in her throat. And immediately she hung up on him, tossing her phone aggressively to the side.
