Episode Twenty-eight

Leandro and Porzio sat in wrought-iron chairs arranged on a marble terrace, overlooking a sprawling garden within the confines of Porzio's grand estate. The sun cast its warm rays upon the two men, casting gentle shadows upon their faces as they engaged in their clandestine conversation. Leandro’s green eyes were hidden behind a pair of polished sunglasses, he was leaned back in his chair. His well-tailored suit accentuated his broad shoulders, while his hands rested calmly on the armrests. His lips curved into a faint smirk, giving away nothing of his true thoughts. Opposite him, Porzio sat with an upright posture. Leandro's voice, smooth and measured, came again after his father’s voice died off. "To be honest, I've indeed carefully considered Moretti's offer, but it seems unlikely that I will accept it. The risks outweigh the immediate gains, and it could compromise our long-term stability." Porzio's expression remained unreadable, his voice carrying a tone of understated authority. "I understand your reservations, Leandro,” he said lightly flickering his left hand just where he leaned it. “Your caution is commendable.” He didn't seem like he was interested in the offer himself, though Leandro knew too well when Porzio was inquisitive in a bid even though not entirely candid. Leandro's sunglasses managed to conceal the flicker of suspicion in his eyes as he observed his father, tapping his fingers lightly against the armrests. “Though, what I don't understand is why you're interested in the offer yourself. You don't seem like you're into the offer, yet there's something there. What is it that he possesses that has stirred your curiosity?" His voice retained a touch of scepticism. Porzio's gaze shifted momentarily, his voice lowering in volume. “The Moretti family took from me long ago. It's a debt that must be repaid, and this offer presents an opportunity for me to reclaim what rightfully belongs to our family." Leandro's eyes narrowed behind the shield of his sunglasses, his suspicion growing as his father's words sank in. Porzio words were much like things he hears every once in a while, though for some reason this tends to go to an extent. “I understand the desire for retribution, but at what cost? What are the implications of pursuing this vendetta against the Moretti family? We must consider the potential consequences before proceeding." Porzio met his son's gaze, his face still an enigmatic mask. His voice carried a weight of resolve and determination. "Leandro, the cost is inconsequential compared to the restoration of our honor. We cannot allow our family's legacy to be tarnished. It is a matter of principle and the preservation of our reputation within the underworld." Leandro's fingers drummed lightly on the armrests, a reflection of his inner turmoil. His voice was tinged with a mix of loyalty and caution. "Well, I respect your dedication to our family's honour. But we must also consider the larger chessboard of our operations. What ripple effects might this pursuit have on our alliances and partnerships? We risk exposing vulnerabilities and disrupting the delicate balance we have meticulously crafted." “You raise valid concerns,” Porzio admitted after a moment of silence. “You have always been astute in your assessments. I have thought long and hard about the implications of this pursuit. Rest assured, I have a tactical plan in place.” Leandro absorbed his father's words, his expression remaining neutral, betraying no hint of doubt or objection. Leandro finally walks out of the building and headed toward his car whose door was opened with a respectful gesture, and so he slid into the backseat. Just as the door closed, his phone buzzed with an incoming call, interrupting the quiet solitude of the car. Leandro retrieved his phone from his pocket, glancing at the caller ID. His brows furrowed slightly in curiosity as he answered the call. “Hello, Venere," he greet her with a composed tone, yet his voice was calmly warm and inquisitive, his green eyes darting to Alonzo as he got into the car. Venere's voice flowed through the phone, a blend of familiarity and underlying tension. "I admit you're too far to reach these days. Didn't know I was coming back to this. I hope this call finds you well." A fixed faint smile tugged at the corners of Leandro's lips as he leaned back in his seat, his gaze directed at the passing scenery. "I'm as well as one can be in this line of work. How about you?" There was a hint of playfulness in Venere's voice as she replied, "Oh, you know me. Always managing to stay one step ahead. But I called because I heard you were in town. Care to catch up over dinner? It's been ages since the last time.” Leandro's expression softened. “Ah, you mean the one with my father? I would admit, it won't be the best.” Venere's voice came through, her tone laced with playful banter. "I thought you lost your humor, Leandro. It seems you still have a hint of it left." Conceivably a faint grin on his face, but his eyes seems to be calculating for a moment, and then “I can always find it when I need it.” he said curtly “Sure, dinner sounds good. It would be wonderful to catch up and reminisce.” Ginevra stood by the window of her apartment, absentmindedly smoking a cigarette as wisps of smoke curled around her. She seemed lost in her thoughts, the tension evident on her face. The balcony spot seemed to be the only place where she could truly relax in the apartment since the rest of the living space seemed to be festooned with Leandro's intrusive gaze, making her uncomfortable, especially after the incident of the previous night. And she wasn't ready to smoke in her bedroom. After a few moments, the sound of the doorbell broke through Ginevra's contemplation. Startled, she flicked the half-smoked cigarette into the ashtray and hurriedly stubbed it out. Taking a deep breath, she composed herself and made her way to the door, adjusting her disheveled appearance along the way. As Ginevra swung open the door, Chiara, slightly breathless, stood outside, a mix of relief and frustration on her face. “Gush! Finally!” Chiara exclaimed, trying to catch her breath. "This entire vicinity feels like a maze!" Ginevra managed a weak smile, feeling slightly guilty about her delayed response. "Sorry about that, Chiara. Come on in." Chiara stepped into the apartment, glancing at Ginevra curiously. The faint smell of smoke lingered in the air, and she couldn't help but notice the signs of unease on her friend's face. “Everything alright, Ginevra?" Chiara asked, concern evident in her voice. It was understandable she needed to know since her not-too-social friend decided she needed her to visit out of the blue. It was unlike Ginevra to do, and even though Chiara was all happy about that, she knew something must have happened. Ginevra sighed, her shoulders slumping. “Seems like it” her voice carrying a hint of weariness. She turned and walked towards the kitchen, signalling Chiara to follow. Observing the scene, Chiara couldn't help but comment, though her tone came off playful. “Looks like you were busy. Didn't stop smoking, did you? I know you wouldn't” Ginevra sighed again, a mix of guilt and resignation crossing her face. "I bet you're not surprised," she admitted, glancing at the remnants of her cigarette in the ashtray. Chiara smiled, humouring her friend's habits. “Far from that” she let out. Ginevra's actions were familiar to her, and she understood that sometimes it took more than a simple conversation to calm her mind. Ginevra pulled the fridge open. “I needed something to calm my mind." “Calm your mind,” Chiara repeats “Is something really going on, Gin?” Chiara asked as she followed Ginevra into the kitchen, leaning against the counter with a sympathetic expression. They leaned against the kitchen counter, the cool surface offering a brief respite. Ginevra reached for a bottle of a drink and two glasses, pouring a generous amount into each. She handed one glass to Chiara, who took it with a grateful smile. "Not much is going on, just a girl being bored alone," Ginevra finally spoke, her voice tinged with a touch of melancholy. She took a sip of her drink, momentarily losing herself in the moment. Chiara raised an eyebrow, teasingly contradicting her statement. “You don't get bored” she exposed. Ginevra twitched her mouth, as if contemplating Chiara's remark. Then, a mischievous glint appeared in her eyes, and a smug smile spread across her face. She leaned closer to Chiara, their glasses clinking softly. "You know me too well," Ginevra responded, her voice filled with amusement. "Well, I am bored, and there's no better person to go out with than you." Chiara raised an eyebrow, catching on to Ginevra's unspoken suggestion. As she took another sip of her drink, she smirked, already knowing where this was heading. "Are you really suggesting a club?" Chiara asked, a playful tone in her voice. “That's not all that Ginevra of you” “Come on... Don't make it sound like I've never been to one” Ginevra said taking her drink “And to top that, I got the perfect one in mind.”
