Ginevra's heart pounded in her chest as she stood caught between the two powerful men. She knew that defying Leandro would have consequences, but she couldn't ignore her unyielding urge to learn about the relationship between the two. It was a choice she never expected to face, and it seemed to carry more weight with each passing moment.
Gerardo's gaze flickered toward Ginevra's direction, his eyes narrowing slightly as he took in the scene before him. With a tinge of curiosity, he broke the silence, his voice calm yet laced with a subtle edge and a rare amusement under shimmering vexation.
"It seemed you two are quite acquainted," Gerardo remarked, his words directed at Leandro. His tone hinted at an underlying tension, suggesting a deeper understanding between the two men. “Old habit, huh?”
The look in his eyes at his words did get under Leandro’s skin.
Leandro, however, remained stoic, his expression betraying little emotion. He gave no immediate response, but instead, he faintly signalled for Alonzo to guide Ginevra into the waiting car.
Though just as Ginevra noticed Alonzo stepping forward, she made no attempt to resist. With a mix of uncertainty and edginess, she complied, entering the car without putting up a fight. The sound of the closing door echoed through her ears, amplifying the feeling of being shut out from whatever was transpiring between the two men.
Seated in the car, Ginevra's focus remained fixed on Gerardo and Leandro, who stood at a distance. She could only see Leandro's broad back and the intense yet neutral gaze of Gerardo. Their body language spoke volumes, revealing an unspoken tension that suggested they were far from being friends—they appeared more like adversaries locked in an intricate power struggle.
Ginevra strained to decipher their conversation, but the words eluded her, leaving her in a state of uncertainty. She could only rely on her instincts and the observations of their unspoken cues.
“This must have been a bad idea” She grumbled regretfully, acknowledging the risks she had unknowingly stumbled into. Yet, there was a part of her that felt a sense of satisfaction in uncovering this hidden connection, even though it meant she had unfinished business with both men.
Amidst the unfolding drama, Gerardo's gaze flickered momentarily toward Ginevra's direction, as if acknowledging her presence. However, Leandro turned and began to walk toward the waiting car, implying whatever conversation they were having has come to an end.
Leandro entered the car, and Alonzo drove them away from the place, heading in the direction of her apartment. The short drive to her apartment was filled with a tense silence, leaving Ginevra barely making a move on her seat, the weight of the situation weighing heavily on her.
Why was there so much tension?
It was much and it scared her.
As they reached her building, Leandro stepped out of the car and began heading toward the entrance. This looked almost like the first time he got angered by her false alarm call— except this was on a different level. Even a child could tell.
Ginevra followed suit, her footsteps echoing in the quiet surroundings. Soon enough, her apartment door closed behind her, and just as she turned to face Leandro, she found herself alone with him.
The atmosphere in Ginevra's apartment turned heavy with tension as Leandro locked eyes with her, his anger simmering beneath the surface. His voice carried a gradual intensity, reflecting his growing frustration.
“Tell me,” his voice broke out “...is this the reason you go out jogging at night?" Leandro asked, his tone laced with accusation, while his eyes drilled into hers with an intensity that made her heart race.
Fear prickled at Ginevra's skin, and she stammered, "N-no, it has nothing to do with my jogging."
Leandro's voice tightened, his anger gradually unfurling. "Then, tell me why you were seen with him," he demanded, his words punctuated with a sharpness that sent a chill down her spine.
Confusion mingled with her nervousness, and Ginevra struggled to find her voice. "What does it matter to you?" she mustered, her words a fragile shield against his mounting rage.
It wasn't like she owed him an explanation of what she does with her free time.
A low, menacing rumble resonated from deep within Leandro's chest. His eyes bore into hers, their intensity burning like molten fire. "Everything!" he thundered, his voice vibrating with an ominous warning. "So you better start talking."
Ginevra felt the weight of his anger pressing down upon her, suffocating her. She took a shaky breath, her voice barely above a whisper. "It's only been twice," she admitted.
“Twice where? And when?" he demanded, his voice laced with a tinge of desperation, seeking to uncover the extent of their encounters.
She understood the whole undercover situation but why was he making it look like she had cheated or something? This was gradually also getting on her nerve.
“I asked you a question” Leandro's frustration grew, his impatience evident in his voice.
A flicker of anger ignited within Ginevra, emboldening her to suddenly and unexpectedly challenge his interrogations. Perhaps she has had enough already.
“Why do I have to explain myself?" she snapped, her voice rising with a mix of frustration and defiance. "I'm allowed to talk to others! Yes, I happened to meet him and we chatted, but why is it any of your business? Why should I have to justify my actions to you?"
The room fell into a heavy silence, tension hanging in the air as Leandro’s eyes narrowed, fixated on her.
Leandro took deliberate strides towards her, his voice dripping with authority and a hint of menace. "You seem to forget your place," he uttered in a low, menacing tone. "Remember, you work for me. That means every action you take requires justification, whether you like it or not!”
Defiantly, she snapped back, her voice laced with her own decision. "Then I'm done!" she retorted sharply— but before she could react, Leandro swiftly closed the distance, forcefully pressing her against the wall near the entrance.
The impact left her breathless, her heart racing as fear mingled with a hint of fascination in her eyes, meeting his intense gaze at such close proximity. His face was a mere breath away from hers, his grip unyielding as he held her firmly in place.
Leandro's sneer twisted his features as he spoke with a chilling certainty. "In case you had any misconceptions, let me correct you. Since the day you asked to work for me, you belong to me. I own you. And you don't get to decide when you can leave."
A whimper escaped her trembling frame, the sound muffled by the tightening grip around her throat, the realization of her predicament sinking in. "Please," she pleaded, her words choked with pain, "let me go.” she tried to free herself as the burn on her throat intensified.
Perhaps for a while now, she had forgotten who he truly was. However, in this harrowing moment, the truth of who Leandro truly was washed over her like a chilling wave once again. He was dangerous. A mafia.
She might have forgotten that.
Leandro's gaze hardened–icy, his eyes burning with an intensity that sent a cold shiver down her spine. "Don't you ever, ever think you can escape me," he hissed, the words dripping with possessiveness, dominance and a promise of dire consequences. "You're trapped, and there's no way out. Remember that."
Relinquishing his grip, Leandro withdrew from her, allowing her to gasp for precious air. She coughed and clutched her bruised throat, her body trembling with the aftermath of his aggression.
“Thought so," he sneered, his voice filled with an undeniable dominance. "Focus on your job here and steer clear of Gerardo Di Maggio," he cautioned sharply, his warning hanging heavy in the air.
With swift and purposeful strides, he made his way to the door, leaving the apartment without a backward glance.
Fueled by fury, Leandro stormed into his waiting car, his anger visible in every tense muscle of his body. He threw himself onto the back seat, forcefully tugging at his loosened tie in a desperate attempt to find some semblance of relief from the mounting tension. A frustrated groan escaped his lips as he shifted uncomfortably, the weight of the situation pressing down upon him like a heavy burden.
Caught in the intensity of the moment, Alonzo glanced at Leandro through the front mirror, concern faintly etched on his face.
Sensing his gaze, Leandro issued a sharp command, his voice brimming with authority, “Drive to the residence."
His anger was fueled by various factors, but the knowledge that Gerardo, of all people, now knew about her, ignited a blazing inferno within him.
"Old habits, huh?" Gerardo's direct words hit home— hard enough, their impact revealing his keen observation and the unsettling familiarity he also seemed to have noticed in her.
If only she had confined herself to exercising within the safety of her own apartment! How on earth did she manage to cross paths with that damn Gerardo, especially considering he didn't even reside in the vicinity?
Perhaps he was being too soft on her.
As they arrived at one of his grand residences, Leandro burst out of the car and strode towards the entrance with an aggressive force. Pushing open the double doors forcefully, he made his way to one of the imposing pillars in the grand passageway, delivering a resounding blow with his gloved fist. The sound combined with his foiled groan echoed through the hall, freezing Alonzo and the surrounding guards in their tracks, their eyes widening in response to the raw display of Leandro's anger.
Leandro's rage consumed him as he pressed both palms against the solid pillar, his body trembling with anger and frustration. He needed an outlet for his pent-up emotions, and the unyielding stone became the target of his ire. With a forceful strike, he unleashed his fury upon the pillar, the sound reverberating through the hall, echoing his turbulent state of mind.
Taking a deep breath to steady himself, Leandro pushed forward, his steps purposeful. Alonzo and a handful of guards hastened to keep up.
Navigating the labyrinthine corridors of the grand estate, they eventually reached a secluded section concealed at the back of the building. Leandro swung open the door, revealing a hidden chamber bathed in dim light. Within its confines stood a figure, shackled to the wall.
Leandro's eyes blazed with a fierce intensity as he locked his gaze on the prisoner before him. The man stood there, shackled and vulnerable, a puppet caught in the web of his own deceit. Leandro approached him with measured steps, his presence commanding the attention of all who bore witness to this clandestine encounter.
The prisoner, drenched in fear, dared not meet Leandro's gaze directly. He knew he had been discovered, his double game exposed to the very man he had deceived. Sweat trickled down his forehead as he struggled to find words to justify his betrayal.
"You thought you could deceive me, didn't you?" Leandro's tone was laced with a mix of disdain and disappointment. “Well, you did for a while there” He admitted "You were trusted with secrets, with my empire, and yet you sold yourself to Gerardo. How dare you?" His voice came in a low rumble.
The prisoner's lips quivered as he struggled to form words, his voice a mere whisper. "I... I had no choice," he stammered, his gaze finally meeting Leandro's. "He... he threatened my family. I... I had to do what he demanded."
Leandro's expression hardened, his eyes narrowing with a mixture of anger and contempt. "Threatened your family, you say?" he growled. "You had a choice, and you chose to betray me. You are a weakling, willing to sacrifice honor for personal gain."
With each passing moment, the tension in the room thickened, as if the very air held its breath in anticipation of the impending judgment. In an instant, Leandro's hand shot out like a striking snake, his strong fingers curling around the prisoner's collar with an iron grip. The man gasped for air, his face contorting in pain as Leandro's fingers dug into the delicate muscles of his neck, threatening to pierce through the flesh.
Leandro's eyes bore into the prisoner's soul with an intensity that sent chills down his spine. His voice, a low and chilling growl. “Did you forget what I look like when I'm betrayed?” he seethed, his words laced with an unmistakable menace. “Now you're going to give me every information I need– or I will show you things worst than death”
