Episode Eight

The luxurious dining room was decorated with elegant chandeliers and a long wooden table, laden with delectable Italian delicacies. Porzio, the ageing patriarch of the powerful Vinci mafia family, sat at the head of the table with his son Leandro at the other end, opposite, while his two young grandchildren, Lucetta and Aurelio, seated beside him. Despite the luxurious spread, the atmosphere was tense, with a noticeable undercurrent of unspoken conflict between Porzio and Leandro, but both men maintained a façade of cordiality in front of the children. Porzio raised his glass of red wine in a toast. "To family," he said, his eyes lingering on Leandro for a moment. Leandro raised his glass in response, but his expression remained guarded. The grandkids, oblivious to the tension, chatted excitedly about their day at school, trying to fill the awkward silence between the two men. Porzio smiled indulgently at them, happy to see his grandkids thriving under Leandro's care. And oddly, Leandro noticed that his father's attention seemed to be more focused on the children than on him. What could he be up to? "So, what brings you here, father?" Leandro asked, finally breaking the uneasy silence. Porzio took a sip of his wine before replying. "Just wanted to check up on my son and his family," he said, his tone carefully neutral. Leandro raised an eyebrow, not entirely convinced. "Is that all?" Porzio chuckled, trying to diffuse the tension. "Relax, Leandro. I'm not here to cause trouble," he said, his voice softening. "I just wanted to spend some time with my grandkids." Leandro nodded, not entirely convinced but willing to play along for now. As the dinner drew to a close, the nanny appeared to escort Lucetta and Aurelio to their bedrooms. Porzio observed his grandchildren's departure with a trace of wistfulness in his gaze before shifting his focus back to Leandro. With the children gone, Leandro decided to confront his father directly. "Father, let's stop pretending that you're here just to enjoy a meal with us. Why did you really come?" Leandro asked, his tone firm. Porzio's expression didn't change, but his eyes hardened slightly. "You've always been a sharp one, my son," he said, his voice low and measured. "I did come to discuss some business matters." Leandro bristled at the implication. "What kind of business matters?" Porzio leaned back in his chair, his eyes flicking across the table over to Leandro. "I have a proposition for you. I want to expand our operations and I need your help." Leandro's eyes narrowed, suspicion creeping into his mind. "And what's in it for me?" Porzio raised his eyebrows. "The opportunity to strengthen our family and make a lot of money, of course." Leandro leaned forward, his voice lowering. "You know I'm not a yes-man, Father. I cannot commit to something like this without more information" Porzio leaned back, his expression unreadable. "I can't tell you everything now, but I promise you, it will be worth your while. Think about it, Leandro. This is an opportunity for you to grow much stronger." Leandro sat back, his mind trailing on the prospects. He knew that his father was still a powerful man, and his offer was tempting. But at the same time, he didn't trust him entirely. "We'll discuss this further another time, Father," Leandro said, his tone final. "For now, let's just say I need time." Porzio nodded slowly, acknowledging his son's condition. "I understand," he said. "But do not take too long. Time is of the essence in our line of work." Leandro nodded in acknowledgement, understanding that his father's words were both a promise and a warning. Porzio's gaze shifted briefly to his escort, a silent command for them to follow him. "I will be in touch," Porzio repeated, his tone firm. "And I will be waiting to hear Lucetta play at the event." There it was– the event! Leandro felt a twinge of unease at his father's words. He knew that Porzio's "event" was likely to be something much more than a simple gathering of family and friends. But for now, he held his tongue, watching as the old mafia boss walked out of the room with his escort in tow. It was apparent that the old man intended to leverage the opportunity to showcase his grandchildren. But why would he do it so early? But then, Leandro knew so well– After a brief meeting with his relative Paolo, Leandro arrived at the event. It was a grand and opulent soiree, befitting the status of the powerful and wealthy individuals in attendance. Leandro scanned the room, his sharp eyes taking in the lavish decorations, the ornate chandeliers, and the elegant guests in their finest attire. Waiters in crisp white jackets circulated through the crowd, offering trays of champagne and delicate hors d'oeuvres. Soft music played in the background, adding to the sophisticated ambience of the occasion. Leandro spotted his father Porzio across the room, surrounded by a group of well-dressed men who appeared to be discussing business matters in hushed tones. He made his way over to his father, careful to maintain his composure despite the tension that simmered between them. As he approached, Porzio turned to face him, a faint smile playing at the corners of his lips. "Ah, Leandro. So good of you to join us," he said, his tone smooth and composed. Leandro returned the smile, though it did not reach his eyes. Just as the other men dismissed, Porzio went on to introduce Leandro to one of the old men he was speaking with, a man whom Leandro had not seen before. The man was tall and imposing, with a sharp suit and an air of authority that suggested he was someone of great importance. "Leandro, I would like you to meet Mr Moretti," Porzio said, gesturing to the man. "He is a longtime associate of our family and someone whose advice and counsel I value greatly." Leandro nodded in greeting, his eyes appraising the newcomer with a cool and detached gaze. He knew that the old man's associates were not to be trusted and that Moretti was likely to have his own agenda. "Mr Moretti," Leandro said, his tone polite but guarded. "It is a pleasure to make your acquaintance." Moretti's lips curled into a faint smile, his eyes flickering with a gleam of amusement as he assessed Leandro. "The pleasure is mine, young man," he said in a deep, gravelly voice. "Your father has spoken highly of you." The words may be flattering but Leandro's expression remained unchanged, inwardly he bristled at the implication that he needed his father's approval or praise. He knew that Moretti was trying to inflate him, and he was determined not to be taken in by the man's smooth words. "Is there something specific you wanted to discuss, Mr Moretti?" Leandro asked, getting straight to the point as they both shifted away from the rest. Moretti chuckled, the sound rough and throaty. "Always the direct one, I see," he said. "But yes, there is a matter that I would like to bring to your attention. It concerns the recent shipment of goods that we acquired through a certain channel." Leandro felt a prickling sense of disquiet at Moretti's words. "I assume that you have everything under control, Mr Moretti," Leandro said smoothly. "But if there is anything that I can do to assist, please do not hesitate to ask." Moretti's smile widened, but there was a glint of something else in his eyes now, something that made Leandro's instincts go on high alert. "That is good to hear, Leandro," he said, drawing out Leandro's name in a way that made it sound almost like a challenge. "But I have a proposition for you, if you're interested." Leandro raised an eyebrow, silently urging the old man to continue. "As you know, our family has long been involved in various enterprises, some of which have been more... lucrative than others," Moretti said, his tone becoming more serious. "But there is one area that I believe we have not fully explored, one that could bring us even greater wealth and power." Leandro listened carefully, his mind racing as he tried to anticipate what Moretti was getting at. He had learned long ago to be wary of anyone promising quick riches or easy power, but he also knew that he couldn't afford to dismiss any opportunity without considering it first. "What do you have in mind, Mr Moretti?" Leandro asked, his voice steady. Moretti leaned in, his eyes gleaming with a hunger that made Leandro's skin crawl "We have the connections, we have the resources, and we have the muscle to make it happen. All we need is a leader who is willing to take the risk and reap the rewards." Leandro felt his stomach drop as he realized what Moretti was proposing. Now he thought of it, it seemed that Porzio had been trying to pave the way for Moretti's pitch. And just then he understood where this was going. "I appreciate the offer, Mr Moretti," Leandro said, trying to keep his tone neutral. "But I will need some time to consider anything you want to be to the table. Regarding the place we are, it will be more conducive to having this discussion later. What say you?" Moretti nodded, but his smile had faded. "Very well, Leandro," he said, his voice icy. "But know that this is an opportunity that you may not want to pass up. Think carefully about what's at stake." Leandro watched as Moretti walked away, feeling a cold sweat break out on his forehead. The fact that Porzio had been the one who introduced him makes it a bit complex. He is at a crossroads, one that could determine the fate of his family's business and his future in the mafia world. Leandro's gaze shifted to the corner of the grand hall where his father stood, and to his surprise, he received a subtle nod from him. He returned the nod and reached for a wine glass on a nearby tray, but as he turned around, his surprise was perceptible at the sight of a lady standing behind him. Stunning as always. Her dress was a form-fitting gown of deep crimson silk, adorned with delicate beadwork that glittered in the light. Her hair cascaded down her back in waves, and her makeup was understated yet flawless. “Venere?” he said, his tone filled with a mix of surprise and confusion.
