“f**k,” Ginevra let out just as she clicked on the image on her laptop. Her hands trembled as she stared at the photo on her laptop screen. It was the image that Dario had sent her after she hung up on him, trying to make up for his betrayal—there on Ginevra's laptop screen was the elusive picture of Leandro's late wife.
She hadn't expected it to have such an effect on her, but as she gazed at the woman's face, a shiver ran down her spine.
“You've got to be kidding me.” She mumbled.
No lies were told as to her resemblance because the woman in the photo had an uncanny resemblance to Ginevra herself—the same hazel eyes, the same delicate features. It was as if she was looking at a reflection of her own image, but trapped in the past.
The emotions that surged through her became much overwhelming, a mix of disbelief, confusion, and deep, unsettling sadness.
Feeling a tightness in her chest, Ginevra hurriedly closed the laptop and made her way to the bathroom. The room felt suffocating, and she needed to catch her breath. She leaned against the sink, her hands gripping the edges tightly, and a fit of coughing overtook her.
Each cough reverberated through her body. It was as if her entire being was convulsing under the weight of the truth that had been revealed. She coughed again and again, each one more forceful than the last until her throat felt raw and her eyes watered.
“No no no no...” She trailed off holding tightly the edges of the sink, taking in sharp breaths to steady herself.
Finally, the coughing subsided, and Ginevra straightened herself, splashing cold water onto her face. She stared at her reflection in the mirror, her eyes red and puffy, her cheeks stained with tears mixed with water. Her appearance was disheveled, mirroring the chaos that had unfolded in her mind and heart.
Ginevra's eyes fell on the diamond necklace that adorned her neck. Anger and frustration coursed through her veins, and in a fit of desperation, she reached for the necklace and forcefully tugged at it, trying to remove it. But it resisted, stubbornly clinging to her neck as if it was a part of her.
The gift was never his affection rather he was adoring someone else, not like it had bothered Ginevra until now. She was being manipulated all along. Used by both parties! The way he often gazes at her was never for her.
“Damn it!” She cursed as she tugged at the necklace.
Her hands shook as she pulled at it once again, and this time, it snapped. A sharp pain shot through her neck, leaving behind a faint bruise. She clutched the broken necklace tightly in her hand, feeling the weight of it in her palm.
Closing her eyes, Ginevra took a deep breath, trying to steady herself. Her mind was in chaos, her emotions spiraling out of control. The truth had shattered the illusions she had built, leaving her vulnerable and exposed.
She couldn't believe that her own team, the people she trusted, had kept such a crucial piece of information hidden from her. Why did they think she didn't deserve to know? Of course, it got everything to do with her so why did they keep it to themselves all this while?!
There she leaned for what dragged to eternity, shattered by people she thought were family. With shaky hands, she reached for a towel and wiped her face, erasing the evidence of her tears.
Two days passed since Ginevra had discovered the shocking truth about her resemblance to Leandro's late wife. In those two days, she had distanced herself from everyone, immersing herself in a whirlwind of emotions and trying to make sense of the tangled web of lies and betrayal.
As she sat in the dimly lit corner of a restaurant, Ginevra watched as Dario fidgeted nervously in his seat, trying to find the right words to mend their fractured relationship. The air between them was heavy with tension, but Ginevra remained silent, her gaze fixed on him.
Dario took a deep breath, gathered his courage, and finally spoke. "Gin, I can't apologize enough for keeping the truth from you. We thought we were protecting you, but we were wrong. You deserved to know the truth from the start, and I should have trusted you enough to handle it."
Ginevra's expression remained impassive, her eyes cold and distant. She had been hurt deeply by Dario's actions, and it would take more than words to repair the damage that had been done.
Even if she was betrayed by others, she never thought of Dario also having a hand in it. He was more than just a partner, their five years together in the field weren't a joke to her.
Dario continued, his voice filled with remorse. "I understand if you can't forgive me right away, but I want you to know that I never meant to hurt you. You're like family to me, Ginevra, and I would do anything to make things right."
Not this family bushit! She was the only one embracing the wrath of Leandro just because she was trying to solve a case they made her sign up for. A case they had held the most vital information to themselves and allowed her to walk into the lion’s den without any knowledge.
Her gaze hardened as she coldly interrupted Dario, her voice laced with bitterness. "Is that the only reason you called me out here? To offer a half-hearted apology and expect forgiveness?"
Dario's words faltered as he struggled to respond. The weight of his actions bore down on him, and he realized the magnitude of the pain he had caused. He reached out, his voice filled with urgency. "No, Gin, it's not just about the apology. I genuinely want to make amends, to rebuild our trust. Please, give me a chance."
Ginevra scuffed, her expression turned even colder, while her eyes narrowed with a mix of disappointment and disdain. She had hoped for sincerity, but all she saw was a feeble attempt to justify his actions. Who knows this might not be the only secret they're keeping from her regarding this case.
Dario's voice trembled as he tried to respond. "No, Ginevra, that's not it. I genuinely want to make things right between us. I never wanted to hurt you."
She sighed. “Coming out here was a mistake. This doesn't just clear the fact that you lied to my face for seven months."
Dario's voice trembled as he desperately tried to find the right words. "Please, Ginevra, I know I've hurt you, but I'm willing to do whatever it takes to make things right."
Ginevra leaned toward him, her gaze intense. "Then go to hell, Dario.” She snapped before she pulled herself off the seat. And without even sparing him a glance, she began to walk away, her back turned to Dario.
He desperately called after her, his voice filled with anguish, but she refused to acknowledge him.
Ginevra walked down her street, her phone pressed to her ear as she stayed connected to Chiara, whose voice came through, filled with surprise and disbelief.
"I can't believe Dario would hide something like that from you, Gin," Chiara exclaimed.
Ginevra let out a soft sigh. "Yeah, it's been a series of disappointments lately."
Chiara's voice carried concern. "I'm so sorry, girl. It must be really tough for you. How are you holding up?"
Ginevra paused for a moment, her voice tinged with sadness. "Honestly, it feels like everything is falling apart. I trusted him most. I don't even know what I'm doing anymore." she admitted.
Chiara tried to offer some comfort. "You deserve better, Gin. Don't let their actions define you. Take some time for yourself, you don't have to go according to plans all the time."
However, Ginevra's eyes landed on Gerardo’s familiar figure standing just by his car like always, though this time it was daylight, not his usual nighttime surprises, and the thought of why he showed up at such an odd hour ran through her mind. She slightly stopped in her track but then continued.
He may be a mafia, cunny most of the time but to her judgment, he comes off to be the only one telling the truth.
She interrupted Chiara gently, "Uhm, Chiara. There's someone I need to talk to. I'll catch up with you later."
With that, Ginevra ended the call and began to approach Gerardo. As she neared him, he opened the car door, as if he had been anticipating her arrival.
Ginevra's gaze locked with his, drawn to the intensity in his eyes. A subtle nod from him beckoned her forward and then he gestured for her to get into the car.
He said no word.
Taking a deep breath, Ginevra entered the passenger seat, her senses heightened ever so slightly as the door closed behind her with a soft whisper. Gerardo moved, rounded the car, and slipped into the driver's seat.
Turning to face Gerardo, Ginevra couldn't help but ask, "Where are we going?" Her voice held a blend of suspension and uncertainty.
Gerardo's lips curled into a sly smirk, his eyes sparkling with intrigue. He enjoyed the suspense and took a moment to relish it before responding, "You'll find out soon enough." it was just like him.
