Ginevra leaned against the hotel room window, staring out into the darkness as the voice on the phone whispered urgent instructions in her ear. Her heart pounded with adrenaline as she contemplated the next move in this high-stakes game of cat and mouse.
"This is only the first step," the voice said, urgent and hushed. "Good job, Gin. Make sure you get inside."
Ginevra wasn't just any FBI agent. She was a master of deception, a chameleon who could slip into any role and play it to perfection. And that's exactly why she had been chosen for this mission. If anyone could infiltrate the inner circle of the notorious mafia boss Leandro, it was her and the act a few hours ago was only a glimpse of her.
"Understood," she said, her voice steady despite the adrenaline coursing through her veins.
As she hung up the phone, Ginevra felt a rush of excitement mixed with fear. The plan was simple on paper, but executing it would be a whole other story. To get close to Leandro and learn his secrets, she would have to play a dangerous game of decoy and manipulation. One wrong move and she could end up dead.
"This is going to be a long ride," Ginevra mumbled.
She flopped down on the bed, letting out a deep sigh as she tossed her phone aside. The events of the day weighed heavily on her mind, and she couldn't shake the feeling of uncertainty that lingered within her. She ran her fingers through her hair, exposing the medical plaster on her temple. Ginevra winced as she touched it, remembering the sharp pain of the cut that had caused it. That blood, Leandro had been tempted to wipe.
She turned on the bed, her mind in a bit of turmoil. They had all assumed that Leandro would be drawn into the act, but his unexpected offer to pay off the debt caught her off guard. It left Ginevra with an overwhelming feeling of uncertainty. As she tried to piece together what it could mean, a million questions raced through her mind, and she couldn't shake the feeling that there was something more to his action.
The next day, Ginevra trailed behind Alonzo, her eyes darting around the spectacular passageways of the notorious Vinci headquarters. This was the kind of place that people whispered about in hushed tones, a building shrouded in mystery and danger. But here she was, walking through its very heart.
The fear threatened to overwhelm her, but Ginevra pushed it down. She had a job to do, and she was damn good at it. Leandro had requested her presence, and she was determined to prove her worth to the mafia.
As they approached the end of the hallway, Alonzo pushed open a heavy door.
"After you," he said, his expression inscrutable.
Ginevra took a deep breath and stepped through, her eyes discreetly scanning the room.
And then she saw him. The man at the far end of the room, his back turned to her, supposedly on a call. His powerful frame is encased in a three-piece suit. Ginevra's heart raced as she realized that this must be Leandro himself. She may have seen him the night before, but the street wasn't that bright to take much notice of his appearance.
She stood frozen in place, her eyes training in all the right places, a bit lost in the perfection of his body, if this was a different scenario, she would have imagined her fingers tracing every curve– but as soon as he turned around slowly to face her and their eyes locked. Every molecule of attraction she felt in that brief moment vanished immediately. His eyes were dark and piercing, and Ginevra felt a chill run down her spine as he studied her— these eyes were different from what she had felt last night.
"You must be Ginevra," he said, his voice low and dangerous as if he never met her hours ago that can't even yet be considered a day.
Ginevra's heart skipped a beat as Leandro's deep, menacing voice echoed through the room. She swallowed hard, trying to quell the rising fear within her. This was the man she had heard so much about, the one whose very name struck fear into the hearts of many.
Leandro's eyes bore into hers, and Ginevra felt as though he could see right through her. She tried to keep her composure, but her nerves were getting the best of her, and as she opened her mouth to speak, she realized that she had no idea what to say. All of her training and preparation had led up to this moment, but now that it was here, she felt completely unprepared.
She took a deep breath and tried to steady herself, her mind racing as she searched for the right words. She knew the stakes were high and the risks even higher. One wrong move, and she could be exposed as a spy. This was a man who had seen it all and had no tolerance for fools. She had to be careful with her words, every syllable counted.
"I am," she finally said, her voice barely above a whisper. She pushes her shoulders back and stood tall despite the way her body trembled.
Leandro's lips curved into a small smile, and Ginevra could see the glint of amusement in his eyes. "I've been expecting you," he said, his voice dripping with danger and then he shifted to his seat.
Leandro leaned back in his chair, a sceptical expression on his face as he assessed Ginevra. She stood before him, her heart pounding with nerves as she tried to maintain a calm exterior.
"Alonzo said we could use you, but I'm not entirely convinced you're up for any task," Leandro said, his voice laced with thinly-veiled doubt.
Ginevra tried to relax her mind to come up with a response that would prove her worth. She couldn't afford to let this opportunity slip away, not when she was so close to achieving her goal.
"I assure you, Mr Vinci, I am more than capable of handling any task you may have for me," Ginevra said, her voice steady and confident. "I am determined to prove my worth and pay you back."
Leandro raised an eyebrow, seeming unimpressed by her words. Ginevra held her breath, waiting for his response.
"If that's the case, then you're free to leave," he said coolly, the finality of his words cutting through the air like a knife.
Ginevra hesitated, realizing that her last words may have been the reason for his dismissive attitude. She knew she had to choose her next words carefully or risk losing the opportunity altogether.
"Show her the way out," Leandro signalled to Alonzo, his voice cool and dismissive.
Ginevra's gut clenched at the thought of leaving empty-handed. She couldn't let this opportunity slip away without a fight.
"No!" she cut through, her voice fierce and determined. She could feel Leandro's intense gaze on her as she spoke, but she refused to cower. "I don't want to leave. I-I have nowhere to go" she added, her voice calmer and steady this time. She kept her head down, trying to hide the fear that threatened to overtake her. Her hands were tightly clenched, willing herself to stay calm.
Summoning her courage, Ginevra took a deep breath before speaking again. "Just give me a chance to prove myself," she said, her voice unwavering.
Leandro studied her for a moment, wondering why she was so determined to work for him. Perhaps she longed for a sense of belonging, he thought, but Leandro knew that this was no place for a woman to follow.
"Well, I would love to know if you're capable of anything," he said, his tone sceptical. "Do you think you are capable of managing anything?"
Ginevra's heart raced as she heard Leandro's throaty voice fill her ears. She kept her head lowered, not wanting to make eye contact with him, but his presence loomed over her like a dark cloud. His question lingered in the air, leaving her uncertain of what to say.
"Yes, I am," Ginevra managed to stammer out, her voice trembling slightly. She wished she knew what type of job they needed her for, but she didn't want to show any sign of weakness.
Alonzo could sense her tension "Sir..." Alonzo interjects.
"Let her find her own words to describe her value, Alonzo" Leandro cut him off before he could utter another word.
Leandro's sudden rise to his feet only added to the tension in the room. Ginevra felt as though the ground was about to swallow her up. "Alonzo is forward-thinking, patient and fair. I'm none of those," Leandro said as he leaned against the edge of his table. "So, with that in mind, could you please explain to me, why you think that Alonzo has chosen to let an insolent woman like you work for us?"
Ginevra's nervousness only increased as Leandro's voice grew more firm. She knew she needed to focus on her duty, but it was hard to keep her emotions in check. "Yes, Sir Vinci, handling things requires a strategy, one which I have," she replied, her voice now more confident. "And I can say I'm quite quick at learning new things"
Leandro didn't seem convinced or conceivably he wanted to learn how determined she was. "I admire your confidence," he said slowly, "but I distrust your ability."
Ginevra's nerves surged at his words, but she refused to show any signs of defeat. "Do you distrust my ability?" she asked, her tone challenging. "Or your judgment?" she slightly raised an eyebrow.
Leandro's scuff indicated his surprise at Ginevra's boldness. "You've got some balls in you, you know?" he said, his face stoic. "Two good questions. If I knew the answer to the first, I wouldn't doubt the second." There was a moment of tense silence before Leandro spoke again. "What do you think about becoming an officer?"
Ginevra's mind raced as she considered Leandro's question. It wasn't the offer she was expecting, imagine being sent back to where you're coming from, that's a total bad luck for a start, but it gave her a glimmer of hope. She took a deep breath and locked eyes with Leandro.
"I think it could be a good fit for me," she said, her voice steady. "I'm willing to learn and work hard to prove myself."
Leandro's expression softened slightly, and Ginevra knew she had made progress. But she also knew she still had a long way to go to earn his trust.
