Episode Twenty-two

The private aeroplane glided to a refined halt on the tarmac, its engines humming in subdued suspense. Stepping out first was Alonzo, accompanied by two formidable escorts who followed closely behind him, all in sleek black suits, though Alonzo's came in some charcoal-looking ones, with a striped tie. Just a few steps behind them, Ginevra emerged from the aircraft, her exquisite presence radiating with each elegant stride, leaving her hair flowing with the relentless breeze, while Leandro trailed behind her, his piercing gaze surveying the surroundings. As Ginevra approached the line of waiting SUVs, Alonzo moved forward, his intention clear—to escort her to her apartment. She was on the brink of stepping into one of the vehicles when Leandro's voice cut through the air like a command, halting her in her tracks. "No. She's coming along, Alonzo." Leandro's declaration resonated, catching Alonzo off guard. A faint flicker of surprise crossed Alonzo's face, a fleeting expression swiftly concealed by his unwavering professionalism. He was well aware of their next stop, but somehow couldn't relate to why Leandro wanted Ginevra to come alone. With a nod of compliance, he acknowledged his boss's decision, adjusting his plans in an instant. “Yes, sir” Alonzo curtly responded. Though he wasn't the only one taken aback by Leandro's order. Ginevra was too. She was finally seeming to feel a bit relieved of the whole Leandro’s presence but it seems luck wasn't on her side. As questions danced on the tip of her tongue, eager to be voiced, she locked eyes with Leandro. Just as she was about to inquire 'why so'? Or perhaps ‘to where’? Leandro, with a gesture both commanding and subtle, beckoned her towards his awaiting car. "Enter the car," His voice, low but firm, accompanied the gesture, leaving no room for further inquiry. Ginevra's curiosity and confusion swirled within her, yet Leandro's unwavering directive brooked no opposition. A trace of uncertainty mingled with the intrigue that enveloped her, but with a resigned acceptance, she proceeded to follow his silent command. The sleek vehicle's doors closed just after Leandro got in. And soon, the engine purred to life, and the convoy smoothly glided away from the runway. As they left the familiar behind, gliding along the winding road, Ginevra's curiosity sparked, manifesting in a subtle lift of her brow. Turning her gaze towards Leandro, she couldn't suppress the question that lingered on her lips. "So, where are we going?" she said, his eyes briefly locking with his green ones. Leandro met her inquisitive gaze with a hint of amusement dancing in his eyes. A small smirk played at the corners of his lips as he responded, his voice laced with intrigue. "You will find out in due time, Ginevra. Patience is a virtue, as they say." She held her smile, turning her face to him again, “Well,” she said smugly “...you certainly know how to keep someone on their toes. I must admit, If I didn't know any better, I might have thought I was being abducted." she remarked, her tone half in jest, half tinged with a touch of genuine concern. "What purpose would it serve?" He said, turning to meet her gaze, in his, a flicker– as cold and mild as frost on a windowpane "Though this might have its share of twists and turns, you wouldn't know" The black SUVs glided to a stop outside the warehouse, its tires crunching on the gravel. Leandro stepped out of the car after Alonzo pulled the door open, his eyes scanning the surroundings with a sense of familiarity. He unbuttoned the two buttons that appeared to hold his navy coat, revealing the grey suit he wore– a four-piece set. Ginevra followed closely, the air thick with anticipation and the weight of her thoughts. They entered the dimly lit warehouse, the scent of secrecy hanging in the air. Leandro's gaze fell upon an aged man, his weathered features etched with a lifetime of experiences in the criminal underworld. Leandro approached him with, his voice a low murmur as he spoke. “Did the shipment arrive as expected, Roberto?" The aged man, Roberto, nodded solemnly. "Yes, boss. It's here, just as you instructed. Ready for inspection." Leandro nodded, and then the man lead the way, deeper into the labyrinth of containers. The sounds of their footsteps echoed through the vast space, accompanied by hushed sounds from corners. Roberto's voice, a gravelly whisper, intertwined with the shadows as he unraveled the container's significance. "This one arrived today, a long-awaited jewel within our grasp. It conceals the bounty you desired, boss. Precious deals, worth fortunes untold." Though in all, Ginevra's mind raced, desperately seeking answers to the enigma that shrouded their purpose. Why had Leandro chosen to involve her in this clandestine affair? Was it a trial of loyalty, a chance to prove herself in the crucible, or conceivably to know if she would rout them out? She couldn't tell, but either of them, this wasn't just a mere visit. They soon bathed in a cascade of sunlight that spilt through the warehouse's far end, and with a few strides, they reached the container's threshold. A commanding gesture from Leandro beckoned a sturdy figure with a low cut, muscles taut with anticipation, to pry open the doors. Ginevra's gaze shifted from Leandro to the open container, and then watched as Leandro stride in with the aged man. She stood there, with hands crossed, her gaze training on every corner of the place to the sea. The place was massive and the thought that this was only one of the many warehouses that belonged to him made her shiver. Whatever operation this was, it wasn't a child’s play. Ginevra turned but didn't get to see Alonzo who was only a few steps behind her earlier. And somehow she felt like Alonzo was the one handling the main reason why they had come. A twist it was, just like Leandro had said in the car. She was still figuring out where he might have followed when Leandro’s voice came through, pulling her focus to him. “Well done, Roberto,” He said as they stepped out of the container. A glimmer of pride radiated from Roberto's eyes. "Thank you, boss. It was no easy feat securing this prize." Leandro's gaze shifted to Ginevra, their eyes locking in momentarily before he returned his focus to the man. Though, with just that brief moment their eyes met, Ginevra could tell it was like a dare– like he was daring her to do her worst. Like he knew who she was, or perhaps have a guess at it and was striving to conform his logic. What a monster! More like he was only playing along in her game. If so then she was really at it, but this might all just be her speculations. Yet, if there was a slight truth about her thought, revealing this warehouse to her team will make her the ultimate prim suspect, and that might be what the Devil himself could be hunting. Just as Roberto walked aware after a few words, Leandro gestured for Ginevra to join him, and they walked towards the seaside, the cool breeze gently tousling their hair. The rhythmic sound of waves crashing against the rock shore filled the air. As they strolled along, Ginevra couldn't help but notice the peach of the surroundings. The vast expanse of the sea stretched out before them with different colours and categories of containers. "What do you think of this place?" Leandro’s voice came through, calm and collect with a hint of interest, perhaps the significance of her opinion. Ginevra lightly twitched her mouth, processing his words “Does that mean my opinion matters? Or is it a way to know what I really think about this whole thing?” She turned and met his gaze, her expression unyielding. “Hit” He simply urged. And then she let out a soft chuckle, quite faint that even Leandro barely heard it. “Every word I speak carries weight. It's up to you to decide if you can bear the burden of listening." It was much like a silent challenge–but why? A smirk played at the corners of Leandro's lips, a mixture of amusement and appreciation for her response. "Much like it," he said, his voice dripping with a touch of admiration, he wasn't vexed. He watched her for a while, and then swiftly took off his long coat, draping it around Ginevra's shoulders. The gesture took her by surprise, her eyes widening slightly as she processed the unexpected act of chivalry. Ginevra stood there, her mind filled with a whirlwind of thoughts. Leandro's gesture of placing his coat around her shoulders had caught her off guard. It was an unexpected act of kindness, a departure from the hardened persona she had come to associate with him. She wanted to say something, she always had her way with words or maybe even question his motive, but the words eluded her. But then she inhaled, turning her focus to the sea which seemed like the better option. Leandro turned towards the sea too, his gaze fixed on the endless containers. Memories of his past flooded his mind, and he began to share a rare glimpse into his personal history. "The first time I came to this place, I was merely ten," he began, his voice filled with a hint of nostalgia. "I stood here, beside my old man, and witnessed the vastness of the world that awaited me." It wasn't like she wanted to hear his sudden storytelling, but she listened anyway. That doesn't seem to be childhood to me," Ginevra remarked as Leandro’s voice died off, her tone laced with a touch of scepticism. The image of a ten-year-old boy being immersed in the world of organized crime didn't align with her conventional notion of childhood innocence. He turned to face her, his eyes meeting hers. He crossed his hands behind his back. “Childhood takes many forms, Ginevra," Leandro replied, his voice a gentle touch of somberness and acceptance. "For some, it's filled with wonder and playfulness, but for others, it molds us into who we become." Silence enveloped them momentarily, and although the words seemed to hunt her a bit, she didn't want to be consumed by it or perhaps allow herself to feel any absurd remorse like the one threatening to take her “So, is that why you brought me here? To narrate your childhood to me?" Leandro turned to face her once again, his eyes searching hers as if contemplating his response. “It would only be fair if you get to learn a few things, don't you think so?” He raised a brow and just then, he turned and began walking back to the warehouse causing Ginevra to sigh under her breath. After leaving the warehouse behind, the specific SUV carrying Leandro and Ginevra made its way back to Ginevra's apartment building. Ginevra's heart went still as the black SUV came to a halt in front of the building. The engine's low purr added to the tension in the air, the suspense thickening with each passing second. The moment had arrived—the conclusion of an inexplicable journey that had left her bewildered and on edge. Leandro turned his head slightly and locked his piercing gaze with hers. And she could swear her heart missed a beat then. His usually composed conduct seemed slightly shaken, his voice barely audible as he uttered those two haunting words, "Take care." She took a brief inhale of breath and nodded, before stepping out of the car, and soon the vehicle took off. The doors to the elevator opened on her floor, revealing a dimly lit corridor. With a click, she unlocked her door, and she stepped inside–her new sanctuary. Exhaustion washed over her as she closed the door behind her. The weight of the events pressed against her, threatening to pull her under. She leaned her back tiredly against the door, and a deep sigh escaped her lips—a mix of relief, weariness, and lingering apprehension. Closing her eyes, Ginevra allowed the silence to envelop her. Her mind became a canvas on which the whole event replayed, frame by frame. The club, the guest house or whatever it was, the encounter, the gliding airplane, the commanding presence of Leandro, the warehouse, and the unveiled secrets—they all danced before her closed eyelids, creating a mesmerizing yet unnerving spectacle. She breathed out slowly, releasing the tension that had coiled around her. Opening her eyes, she unexpectedly found herself fixated on the long coat still draped around her shoulders. How could she have forgotten to return the coat? It was massive to be omitted. Not like she had wished to bring it home with her, in other words, it was more like torment to her. As her gaze fixed on it, she slowly turned her face to it– almost involuntarily, a whimper escaped her lips as she reached and inhaled its scent–
