61“What the hell was that?” Becca jumped from her seat and stared at the flapping bird. Noah opened the sliding glass doors. Red had scooted beneath a bench and was huddled in the corner. Noah reached for his phone and hit speed dial. “Oscar! We've got a pelican at the ranch. So here we go again. See you soon.” He hung up. “A pelican!” Becca watched the bird that had righted itself and settled under the paloverde tree. “How is it not dead and how did it get to the desert? Aren't those sea birds?” Noah motioned Becca to move slowly toward the butterfly chairs. “We'll watch him until Oscar gets here.” “How do you know it's a him?” Becca eased into one of the chairs.
