The victory in the Weeping Ravine was a brief, freezing breath before the plunge. By the time the strike team returned to the obsidian gates of the Stardust Court, the twilight sky had bruised into a threatening, violent shade of plum. A howling mountain wind swept through the white stone spires, carrying with it a scent that made every guard wolf inside the fortress bare their fangs: the overwhelming, rancid stench of pure blood-frenzy.
Auriel stood in the center of the subterranean interrogation room, her iron distaff still tucked securely into her belt. Across from her, the lead shadow-weaver sat securely bound to a stone chair, wrapped tightly in her glowing, stardust-infused midnight silk. The rebel caster was panting, his lips stained black from the backfired dark magic, but as Alpha Cassian stepped into the light, the weaver let out a dry, rattling laugh.
"You think you’ve stopped it, Lycan King?" the weaver mocked, coughing up a spatter of dark fluid. "You cut off a single finger, but the fist is already closing around your throat."
Cassian didn't flinch. He loomed over the captive, his dark-iron battle armor gleaming under the violet torches. The ancient runes on his neck flared a brilliant, volatile purple. He reached down, his large hand gripping the weaver’s chin with a crushing pressure. "Speak plainly, rebel, or my wolf will rip the memories directly from your skull. Where is Logan?"
"He isn't at his estate," the weaver sneered, his eyes shifting with terrifying fanaticism. "He’s at the Great Northern Veil. While you were wasting your time hunting us in the ravine, Lord Logan brought down the ancestral border-wards. The Bloodfang Pack has shifted. The feral wolves have joined them. An army of ten thousand frenzied beasts is marching down the mountain pass right now. By midnight, your palace will be a graveyard, and your pretty little human weaver will be ours."
Auriel’s blood ran completely cold. Ten thousand.
The Stardust Court’s royal guard was elite, but they were vastly outnumbered. If the border-wards were completely down, the entire kingdom was defenseless. Worse, the neighboring Silk Province—her home—would be completely defenseless against a horde of blood-frenzied wolves once the palace fell.
Cassian released the weaver, turning around with a chilling, absolute calmness that was far more terrifying than any roar. "Double the suppression runes on this cell," he commanded the guards outside the door. "Seal the lower levels."
He gripped Auriel’s hand, his bare skin sparking wildly against hers as the fated mate's bond flared in a desperate, protective rush of heat. He dragged her out of the cells and up the winding stone stairs, his heavy boots clattering like thunder against the marble.
They burst into the grand strategy room, where the glowing violet map table was already flashing erratically. Red warning lights were blinking frantically across the northern boundary lines. The royal advisors and high commanders were shouting over one another, panic turning their scent sour.
"Silence!" Cassian roared. The dominant Alpha aura exploded from his chest, a heavy, crushing wave of raw power that forced every commander in the room to instantly drop their heads and shut their mouths.
Cassian slammed his armored fists onto the edge of the map table, leaning over the glowing lines. "The Bloodfang Pack has committed treason. We do not negotiate, and we do not retreat. Commander Vane, recalls every active warrior from the southern outposts. Form a phalanx at the obsidian gates. We hold the outer walls at all costs."
"But Your Majesty," Vane stammered, looking frantically at the map. "Without the ancestral border-wards, our warriors will be fighting blindly against a frenzied horde. The moon-magic is too weak to sustain our defenses."
"The moon-magic isn't weak," Auriel spoke up, her voice ringing clear and unshakeable across the room. She stepped up to the table right beside Cassian, her silver eyes burning with a sudden, radiant fire. "The ancestral stone was fractured, but it is whole now. I can weave a new ward. If Cassian anchors me with his royal blood-magic, I can spin a celestial stardust veil across the entire valley. It will blind Logan’s army and strip the frenzy from their veins before they even reach the gates."
The commanders stared at her in stunned silence. A human weaver, proposing to anchor a kingdom’s defense.
Cassian turned his head, his pitch-black eyes locking onto hers. The fierce, possessive pride in his gaze was blinding. He didn't care about the rules of the old world anymore. He reached out, his large hand cupping the back of her neck, pulling her forehead firmly against his.
"It will drain you, Auriel," he whispered, his deep baritone tight with a mixture of raw love and terror for her safety. "Spinning a ward that massive requires an immense amount of your soul's energy. If you slip, the magic will consume you."
"I won't slip," she promised, her fingers tightening around the leather of his armor. "Because you are my anchor. We do this together, or we die together."
Cassian closed his eyes, inhaling her scent one last time before his wolf completely took over. He snapped his eyes open, the bottomless voids entirely black. "Prepare the ritual dais on the highest spire," he roared to the council. "Luna and I are going to show this horde what happens when you try to tear down the Stardust Court."
