Chapter 002
The Density of Silence
Alpha Adrian's Point of View
The wind howled among the trees, a far-off echo of the turmoil I sensed inside. Perched on the balcony of my chamber, the moon gave the space of the Blue Moon Pack a chilly, silvery radiance. Tonight it felt like a taunting reminder of everything I had lost, even though it should have felt calm. Every day that went by without Chloe found weight on my soul.
Frustration chewing at me, I ran my fingers through my hair. Somewhere my sister was out there. Alive, at least I hoped so. I had looked for years, without skipping any detail. From my parents to the pride of my pack to now my sister, my uncle, Alpha Pascal, has taken everything from me. Every lead I followed about Chloe's location had brought false optimism and dead ends.
Up till now.
Beta Jasper stood behind me, his presence always reminding me that I was not alone. I turned back at him and could tell he had news—news I wasn't sure I wanted to hear—on his face. Our developing conflict has been evident recently. He understood how personal this was to me, how much searching Chloe meant to me. Jasper was more than simply my beta; he had been my friend since infancy, but even friendship had restrictions when betrayal hung about.
Jasper replied, his voice low and wary, "There's been a word."
My pulse hastened. "From where?," asos
"Green Piercing Pack," he said, hesitating. "There has been a sighting here. Their space turned up someone who fit Chloe's description.
Frozen, my heart thumping against my ribs. Is that accurate? Still alive after all these years, might Chloe, my sister?
What else? My voice tense with expectation, I asked.
Jasper changed uneasily. "Alpha Drake has taken her in."
The name hit me like a gut-reversal agent. Alpha Drake She was with him—the one Alpha I could not trust, the one whose reputation for cruelty and power-hungry dominance was legendary—of all the packs, of all the places Chloe could have ended up.
My blood heated at the idea of Drake touching Chloe. She had nothing to deserve this. She was not deserving of being another pawn in this merciless game of power. Still, here we were, with the likelihood that she was under his influence.
Does Drake not know who she is? I asked, my voice more pointed than I meant.
"No," Jasper responded. "He doesn't seem to know her actual identity. But you also need to know something else.
My focus narrows my eyes. "What?,"
Clearly uncomfortable providing the following bit of information, Jasper turned away for a moment. Adrian, she is pregnant. Chloe... She carries Alpha Drake's child.
The weight of those words slammed over me like a tidal wave, and the planet seemed to slink under me. My sister is expecting? With Drake’s child? How did things come to this?
Holding the balcony's railing, my knuckles turned white as I battled to control my feelings. Inside me whirled anger, terror, and grief, almost consuming me. I had fallen short for her. Once more. First, I failed to shield her from our uncle; today she was in the hands of a monster.
Under my breath, more to me than to Jasper, "I have to get her back." I won't let her go with him.
Jasper moved nearer, his face full of sympathy. You are aware it will not be that straightforward. Drake will not let her leave without a contest.
Then we fought, I said, turning face sharply. "After everything that has transpired, I am not allowing him to keep her. She is my sister; I will do whatever is necessary to get her home.
Jasper didn't protest, but something in his gaze made me uncomfortable. He seemed to know something more, something he was not sharing with me. Now, though, I lacked time to prod him for responses. Not when Chloe's life was in line.
Paced like a caged animal, I rushed back into my chamber. Strategies, ideas, anything to get Chloe out of Drake's hands flew through my head. Though I wanted to act right away, I knew jumping in without a plan could backfire.
"We need more knowledge," I murmured, my voice steadying as I pushed myself to think straight. "We must find out Drake's degree of strength and his degree of Green Piercing Pack immersion. I am curious about his moves, supporters, and shortcomings. Everything about him.
"I'll send scouts right away," Jasper said, already off to follow orders.
I nodded, but my ideas kept racing. I had to concentrate on what counted—getting Chloe back. And so be it. I have to separate Drake's whole pack in order to accomplish it.
Then, though, something occurred to me. Aloro.
I tightened my mouth at the mere image of her turning the knife further. She had been at my side for two years, a diversion, a complication I had not expected. She was dangerous, not only inconvenient today. She had wormed her way into my life and packed under the cover of loyalty. Nevertheless, I knew better. Benevolent under the surface was something sinister and dangerous.
"Adrian?" Jasper's voice drew me back into consciousness.
My face set with resolve, I turned to him. "Ask where Alora is," I said. "What she's been up to interests me. She is hiding something; I have to find out what.
Jasper nodded curtly and exited the room, leaving me alone with ideas. Alora was a loose thread that needed to be cut, but right now Chloe had to be first. I had to save her at all the expenses.
I felt the crushing silence of the night around me as I stood there, the weight of responsibility squarely on my shoulders. Though everything was softly illuminated by the moonlight, all I could see was black. It was up to me to bring my sister back; she was out there caught in a life she did not deserve.
I would save her. < I would correct the historical errors. And I would make sure nobody—Alpha Drake, my uncle, or anybody else—stood in my way.
Viewpoint of Chloe
The days in the Green Piercing Pack merged into a haze of doubt and anxiety. Knowing that the other ladies despised me for reasons I couldn't completely understand, I kept my head down to avoid the glares and murmurs. To their perspective, I was simply another weak wolf—an outsider, a curse.
Still, I was not considering them. I considered the child developing within me. I had to defend it at all costs.
Spending my days in the shadows, out of Alpha Drake's sight, I tried to decide where to go next. Michelle had guided me out of the worst of the suffering, but I knew her protection would not endure indefinitely. One of Drake's favorites, she had great loyalty to him. Still, I couldn't understand why she would have shown interest in me. Was there something more, or was it out of sympathy?
Michelle showed up at my door one evening as the sun started to drop and long shadows across the camp started to show. Her expression was serene, but her eyes revealed something that suggested she was not here for idle chat.
Her voice low and anxious, she whispered, "We need to talk."
Not knowing what she wanted, I hesitated. "About what?"
"About Alpha Drake," she said, approaching closely. "And regarding your baby."
In her words, my heart missed a beat. How would she know? I had been somewhat covert and cautious. But hiding it now would not help.
Michelle said, "You have to leave," her voice gentle but stern. " Before it's too late."
I fixed her gaze while my thoughts flew. "Why are you lending me help? Of all his favorites, you are right here. You might have anything you desire.
She sighed, with a mixed-feeling attitude. "I owe you no explanation; however, staying will condemn you and your child. Drake is not the man you believe he is. Neither am I.
Her enigmatic comments left me more perplexed than ever, but I had no time to probe her more. She pushed something—a little folded piece of paper—into my hands before I could react.
She whispered, "Take this." "It's like a passage out of space. Use it carefully.
My hands shaking, I unfolded the paper and fixed her on the mark. Drake's personal seal was a pass allowing me to leave the pack's territory free from guard intervention.
"You're serious," I said, not sure what was occurring.
Michelle nodded, her eyes flickering with something that seemed nearly like regret. Go, Chloe, here. Furthermore, avoid looking back.
She turned and vanished into the darkness, leaving me alone bearing the weight of her words and the priceless passage in her hand.
Though I knew one thing for sure—I couldn't stay here anymore—I didn't know why Michelle had decided to help me. Time was running short.
And this time I would quit only until I discovered freedom.
