Nothing but the brilliant greens and deeper browns of the vast reef shimmering like islands beneath the surface of the Coral Sea were visible to him from the boat's deck. The foamy froth and surge of sea surf rushed up and crashed on the false beach of coral far to the west. He could see the shapes and shadows of fish darting like living arrows across the planet he'd been meant to share with them from his vantage point on the port side. The South American shore was lost in the distance, and all that was left was emptiness. The day was magnificent, with the water's jewel-clear gleam punctuated by white facets of light thrown down by the gold burst of sunlight. There was no sign of rain in the tempting breeze.
