"Yes." She looked directly at him again. "I do not need to marry for money, Derek, or even for security. I would rather wait another ten or even forever than marry the wrong man. Though I would hope the wait is not forever." She said smiling at what she had just said. It is a resolution I have made," she explained, "that love must be the guiding force of my marriage. And this is what I will teach my children too. Her direct gaze did not waver. Would a typical young woman make such a distinction between being in love and loving? Derek wondered. Would many women of any age proclaim that love and possessiveness could not exist together? He had not even made that leap of understanding himself. She was right, though, was she not? Would there be so many unhappy marriages if it were not so?
