Chapter 9

Hurrying across the gleaming hardwood floors, I went to open the door. With a flourishing, I swung it open to reveal my best friend. Standing before me was a five-and-a-half-foot woman with short messy bleached blonde hair. Clashing with the punk rocker hair, a pink and purple flannel shirt draped across her athletic frame. The hem stopped just below her butt revealing the black leggings with silver flowers tracing up her legs that disappeared into her sneakers that were the same pink as her shirt. Somehow, she made the diamond accessories she wore look like they belong with such a casual outfit. Not waiting for an invite, she charged through the door. Looking at me with one perfectly trimmed brow arched she crossed her arms. Rolling my eyes I gestured for her to come in. “So, spill.” Gawd she was so pushy. Waving her towards the couch I waited until we were comfy to start my tale. “I was all snuggled into the bed when I felt someone watching me. So creepy!” I paused for effect. As I described my dream lover, I felt myself get turned on again. Just the thought of those swirling eyes and the perfect V he had got my motor running. What I wouldn’t give to grab him by that beard! Trying not to let my dirty thoughts show, I finished my tale of how I got some dream tail. Pursing her lips, she stared at me. I wondered if she felt the special tingles too. “Ok. So, what did you do when you first got here?” I’d only told what happened after I went to bed. So, I backed up the story from when I first got to the cabin. The wheels were definitely turning behind her huge green eyes. After being best friends for multiple decades, I could even see when the light bulb went off. “Grab you bag. Let’s go.” Use to her ways, I grabbed my purse that was a little more than a wristlet. There was no point in arguing with her when she was like this. We walked to her gigantic truck that I would argue if it was owned by a man, he must be compensating for something. Fumbling for a moment to figure out how to grab the handle on the side of the door while getting my leg on the step thingy, I finally managed to haul myself in. Carissa was already in the driver’s seat, not bothering to hide the fact she was laughing at me. “Problems?” “Shut up! I unlike you don’t need to drive a vehicle that makes a statement.” Looking around the interior I realized this was a new truck. Damn, she’d upgraded again. While all of her trucks had the full bells and whistles package, this one seemed even nicer. The leather seats felt so soft they could only be described as luxurious. “New truck?” She snorted. “Ace took my other one when his car engine blew.” Using a knob on the console she put it in reverse. I swear half for the dash became a back up camera. Expertly she backed the behemoth to the part of the drive where she whipped it around. Flooring it she pulled out on the highway to take us into town. She continued our conversation like there hadn’t been a pause. “He wouldn’t give me back my truck after he drove it for awhile, so I made him buy me this one.” I just shook my head not surprised she had come out on top. They had been married for close to thirty years. Raised three kids and were still head over heels with each other. I’d always envied them. Ace was a hot six-foot three avid outdoors man that lived for his family. They often did triathlons as a family. I cheered from the sidelines. Probably explained why she was a toned hottie, and I was the curvy best friend. I was ok with that. While she was hiking through bear country, I was at home eating tacos. Less than ten minutes later we pulled into a parking spot in a strip center full of restaurants on the edge of town. Cautiously I opened my door after finally locating the handle. Why do they make them so hard to find? Turning so both my legs dangled, I jumped to the ground. Carissa walked around the hood just as I hit the ground. Rolling her eyes she beeped the horn. “How did you find this place? I’ve never seen it before?” Shrugging I started up the stairs. Recreating my previous night we were starting at the sushi joint I’d had dinner at. Good thing it was tasty. “I went out looking for food. Didn’t see any taco places so sushi was an acceptable alternative.” She shook her head at me. My love of tacos was well known. Opening the glasses doors we looked around. The bar seats were full this time. Probably because it was a Friday night. A waitress waved us towards an archway cut into a wall to our left. Shooting each other a look, we walked through it. I couldn’t help but notice it looked like someone had taken a knife and hacked a hole into the wall to connect two businesses. On the other side we found a formal looking dining room. Most of the tables could accommodate four people tops. They were all round with pure white table clothes. White padded chairs circled them. The usual dragon artwork covered the red walls. The chatter from the bar section was barely audible on this side. Exchanging uneasy glances, we sat in the corner table another waitress waved us to. “It’s literally a hole in the wall.” I snorted. “You know it’s gonna be good.” Carissa shook her head. “You didn’t notice it last night?” Puzzled, I looked around again. “You know, I didn’t even realize this part was here.” I paused to laugh while looking around the empty room. “It’s almost like it appeared just for us.”
