Zayn had never been one to hesitate. Confidence had been carved into him since birth, reinforced by wealth, power, and the unwavering certainty that the world would always bend to his will. But now, as he sat in his room replaying every interaction with Kai, he felt something unfamiliar gnawing at him—uncertainty. Kai was different from the people in his world. He didn’t care about wealth, didn’t bow to influence, didn’t fall in line with the expectations that had always worked in Zayn’s favor. That should have been frustrating, but instead, it was intoxicating.
The next day at school, Zayn found himself drawn to Kai more than ever, though he tried to play it cool. The problem was, Kai wasn’t making it easy. He was unpredictable, one moment offering quiet amusement and the next pulling away, as if reminding Zayn that whatever this was, it wasn’t supposed to happen.
By the time lunch rolled around, Zayn had had enough of the distance. He found Kai outside, perched on the hood of his motorcycle, staring off into the distance like he was waiting for something—maybe an excuse to leave. Zayn didn’t give him one.
“You ditching class or just avoiding me?” Zayn asked, crossing his arms.
Kai smirked, but it didn’t reach his eyes. “Maybe both.”
Zayn stepped closer. “Then let’s go somewhere.”
Kai gave him a look. “And why would I do that?”
“Because you want to.”
Kai let out a quiet laugh, shaking his head. “You’re a pain in the ass.”
“And yet, here we are.”
After a long moment, Kai sighed and tossed him the extra helmet. “Fine. But don’t say I didn’t warn you.”
Zayn smirked as he climbed onto the bike. “Wouldn’t dream of it.”
What started as a simple ride turned into something else entirely. They rode for miles, the city fading into back roads and forgotten places. Kai eventually pulled into an abandoned parking lot near the edge of town, where the view of the horizon stretched endlessly.
Kai cut the engine and leaned back, running a hand through his hair. “So, what’s the deal, Lancaster? You just like chasing things you can’t have?”
Zayn didn’t hesitate. “Who says I can’t have you?”
Kai turned to him, something unreadable flashing in his expression. “And if you did?”
Zayn met his gaze, steady and unwavering. “Then I wouldn’t let go.”
The silence between them was thick, the air charged with something that felt dangerously close to a choice neither of them was ready to make. But Zayn knew one thing for certain.
He wasn’t walking away. And he didn’t think Kai wanted him to.
