Zayn was never one to back down from a challenge, and Kai Rivera? He was the most interesting challenge Crestford Academy had to offer.
The first day of classes began with the usual introductions and grandstanding. Professors droned on about expectations, but Zayn’s attention remained elsewhere. He sat in the back of the classroom, watching Kai slouch in his chair near the window, exuding pure indifference. Unlike the rest of the students, Kai didn’t even pretend to care.
The professor called on him once. “Mr. Rivera, would you care to contribute?”
Kai exhaled, slow and measured. “Pass.”
The tension in the room spiked, but the professor didn’t push. Either he was afraid of Kai, or he simply knew there was no point in challenging him. That, more than anything, intrigued Zayn.
During lunch, the air buzzed with speculation. “Did you see the way Zayn was watching Kai?” someone whispered. “He’s either insane or reckless.”
Zayn overheard the murmurs but paid them no mind. He took his time, eating with Noah while scanning the cafeteria. Kai sat alone at the far end, his presence a wall that kept everyone at bay. No one approached him. No one even dared.
That only made Zayn more interested.
Later, as the halls emptied for the day, Zayn spotted Kai heading toward the motorcycle lot. His moment had arrived. Without hesitation, he made his way over, his stride purposeful. Kai was just about to start his bike when Zayn stopped beside him.
“Nice ride,” Zayn commented, hands in his pockets.
Kai didn’t look up. “Not interested.”
Zayn smirked. “In what?”
“Whatever game you’re playing.”
Zayn let out a low chuckle. “Who says I’m playing?”
Kai finally met his gaze, eyes sharp and assessing. “Guys like you don’t just talk to guys like me.”
“Maybe I’m not like the others.”
Kai studied him for a long moment before scoffing. “Keep telling yourself that, Lancaster.”
Instead of being put off, Zayn’s grin widened. “I will.”
Kai exhaled sharply, shaking his head before revving his engine. “You’re a real pain in the ass.”
Zayn watched as Kai sped off, the roar of his bike echoing through the lot. He could still feel the tension lingering in the air, the challenge unspoken but undeniable.
No one had ever interested him quite like this.
The game had begun.
