Chapter 3 - Kadis

801 Words
It’s no use! I can’t stop thinking of her. I finally give in and collapse on the bed next to my pet, feeling unsatisfied. This has never happened before. Never before has a human so completely invaded my thoughts. I thought that some time with my pet would distract me from her, but it only made me think of her more. It made me want her more. I keep thinking that it should be her in bed with me. I roll over and take in the view of my pet, Claire. Confused and naked, Claire is sitting on the edge of the bed looking at me with longing in her eyes. I feel a twinge and realize that it is time to release her. Oh, she still has time left, but I know that she will no longer bring me pleasure or satisfaction. Looking at me with wide eyes, I think she understands what is going to happen. Sighing to myself, I reach over and scratch through the mark I placed on her, effectively releasing her from service. A look of horror crosses over her face as she fades back to her world. I’m not sure what exactly happens to humans when they go back, but now that she is gone, I really don’t care. All that I can think of now is my next pet. I decide to do some research into human and demon interactions. I create a door to the library near the market. I have to find out how she managed to see me, but I cannot just go around Helis asking about it. That would cause some demons to ask about things that I would prefer to keep to myself. So researching through books is my only option, but all tomes here are closely monitored, words and knowledge have power here. Digging through books here would raise questions just as quickly. The human realm it is. I step through the door to find myself in the main foyer. I never was one to care about the secrets of the universe, but I suppose it's never too late. -------------------- I spend the next few hours learning about how humans have viewed us throughout time. I chuckle at most stories and beliefs, but buried within the bullshit, I find a few leads. There are tales of powerful Magi that could interact with demons, but they seemed to have disappeared thousands of years ago. Magi were a race of humans that had evolved to innately control the weave of the universe. The stories point to paranormal intervention that gifted them this evolution. But the books here seem to only hint at it. There is no record on why the Magi disappeared. I may have to try other, older libraries. There are a few in Asia and Old England that may provide me with useful information. Distance and locked doors were no match for demons, and I have all the time in the universe. Other theories include that she may have made a previous deal with another demon and retained her ability to see us. Unlikely as most permissions for sight are short term. The deal would have had to include the provision of permanent sight. Another is that she was a previous pet. This too is unlikely as most of us can sense when a human has already been marked and released. I guess a mark of a higher demon could be erased more thoroughly, but again unlikely. According to stories, most pets start to forget about the specifics of their service within a few hours, and none seem to keep their sight. There are artifacts and items that can allow humans to interact with demons, but most are locked away or lost to the ages. But I guess that she could have come upon an artifact. This theory is probably the most likely. Leaning back in my chair, I ponder the stories I have found. Surely she could not be Magi. I may have to increase my observations to see if there are any of the signs that may point to her being one. I have not seen any in the last few weeks, but to be perfectly honest, I wasn’t watching for them. I can also see if she has any items that may allow her to see me. Testing that theory may be tricky though. Excitedly, I begin going over plans on how I can introduce myself when I hear a soft “excuse me”. Pulled out of my thoughts, I look across the table at the some of the deepest brown eyes I have ever seen. A man could get lost in those eyes for an eternity. Luminous brown hair frames a face, a face that has haunted my thoughts these last few weeks, and as I drink in her beauty, she asks me, “Are you busy?”
