Tuesday evening at the rink was buzzing with energy as kids arrived for their skating lessons. Greg stood by the boards, chatting with Sam Thompson, the head coach, about the charity event they had discussed the day before.
“Sam, I really think we should get the kids’ team involved in the charity showcase,” Greg said, enthusiasm evident in his voice. “They could put on a display—maybe a skills demonstration or a mini-game.”
Sam nodded, his eyes lighting up. “I’m all for it! Not only would it be a great experience for the kids, but it could also bring in more business for the rink. Parents love to see their kids shine.”
“Exactly! If we can create a fun atmosphere, I think we’ll get a lot of interest from families looking to sign their kids up for lessons,” Greg replied, feeling a surge of excitement.
“Take the lead on this, Greg. I trust you to organise it,” Sam said, clapping him on the back. “Let me know how I can help.”
“Will do!” Greg said, feeling a sense of purpose as he watched the younger class arrive, their laughter and chatter filling the rink.
As the lesson began, Greg observed the kids with pride. He spotted Tommy among them, his little figure gliding across the ice with newfound confidence. Greg felt a rush of joy seeing how much Tommy had improved. Encouragement from the coaches and his peers seemed to fuel his enthusiasm.
“Great job, Tommy!” Greg called out, beaming as Tommy executed a small turn with a big smile on his face. The boy’s laughter echoed in the rink, and Greg couldn’t help but feel a sense of belonging to this community.
After the session, Greg noticed Robyn entering the rink. He was surprised to see her, especially since she had mentioned earlier that Tommy’s dad would be picking him up. As Tommy skated over to her, Greg followed behind, curious about the change in plans.
“Hey, Robyn!” he greeted, trying to mask his surprise. “I didn’t expect to see you here.”
“Hi, Greg! Tommy’s dad is running late,” she explained, a hint of frustration in her voice. “He’ll be picking him up later, so I thought I’d come and see how he did.”
“Is it okay if Tommy hangs out for a bit?” she asked, glancing at her son, who was bouncing with excitement.
“Absolutely! I’d love for him to stay,” Greg replied, his heart warming at the thought of spending more time with them. He looked down at Tommy, who was practically buzzing with energy. “How about you help me plan what skills we can show at the charity event?”
Tommy’s eyes lit up. “Really? That would be awesome!”
Robyn smiled, clearly pleased with the idea. “I think that’s a great way for him to contribute.”
As they chatted, Greg couldn’t help but feel a growing connection with both Robyn and Tommy. There was something special about being part of their lives, and he was eager to support them in any way he could.
After the next lesson ended, Greg wrapped up some final details with the coach. He felt energised by the idea of the charity event and the potential it had to bring the community together.
“Ready to head out?” he asked, turning to Robyn and Tommy.
“Yep!” Tommy exclaimed, practically bouncing on his skates.
Robyn gathered her things, and they made their way out of the rink together. The evening air was cool, but the warmth of camaraderie filled Greg’s heart as they walked side by side.
As they strolled back to Robyn’s place, conversation flowed easily. They talked about Tommy’s progress in skating and how excited he was for the upcoming charity event.
“Do you think we could have a little practice session before the event?” Robyn suggested. “It would be fun for Tommy to have a chance to show off what he’s learned.”
“I think that’s a fantastic idea,” Greg replied. “We can set up some time to practice and maybe even invite some of the other kids to join in.”
Tommy chimed in, “Can we have snacks too?”
“Of course! Skating and snacks go hand in hand,” Greg laughed, ruffling Tommy’s hair.
As they reached Robyn’s home, Greg felt a sense of belonging that he hadn’t experienced in a long time. The warmth of their shared laughter and the excitement of the charity event filled the air.
Once inside, Robyn turned to Greg. “Thanks for being so supportive. I really appreciate it.”
“Anytime, Robyn. I’m happy to help,” he said, feeling a sense of purpose. “Let’s make this event something special for the kids.”
With that, they began discussing further plans, their ideas intertwining like the threads of a tapestry, creating a beautiful picture of community, support, and new beginnings.
As the evening wore on, the atmosphere in Robyn’s living room was warm and inviting. They had just started discussing the logistics for the charity event when the doorbell rang.
“Must be Tommy’s dad,” Robyn said, glancing at Greg with a hint of apprehension.
“Want me to handle it?” Greg offered, sensing her unease.
“No, I can do it,” she replied, taking a deep breath as she walked to the door.
When she opened it, Tommy’s dad stood there, his expression a mix of irritation and disapproval. Greg felt a tension in the air, a palpable shift as Tommy’s dad looked him up and down, his eyes narrowing.
“Tommy! Grab your things,” he barked, barely acknowledging Robyn.
“Dad, I was just—” Tommy began, but his father cut him off.
“Now!” he snapped, causing Tommy to rush off to gather his things.
Robyn felt a knot tighten in her stomach. "Don't snap at him like that" Robyn said, She had hoped for a smooth transition, but it was clear that Tommy’s dad was not in a good mood. As Tommy disappeared into another room, his dad stepped closer to Robyn, lowering his voice but making sure to project enough to be heard.
“I see you’ve got another man around Tommy. What kind of example are you setting?” he hissed, his tone dripping with disdain.
Robyn’s eyes widened in shock. “What are you talking about?” she replied, trying to remain calm.
“Don’t play innocent. I know you’re having multiple men around him. It’s disgusting,” he spat, his voice low but venomous.
Just then, Greg, who had been standing a few feet away, caught the tail end of the exchange. Anger flared within him, but he stepped in calmly, his voice steady. “That’s none of your business. Robyn is doing a great job raising Tommy, and you should respect that.”
Tommy’s dad turned to Greg, his face reddening. “Who the hell are you to tell me what to do? You don’t know anything about this situation.”
“I know enough,” Greg replied firmly. “Robyn is a good mother, and she deserves your respect, not your accusations. If you have a problem, take it up with me.”
Tommy’s dad scoffed, clearly taken aback by Greg’s assertiveness. “This isn’t over,” he warned, his voice low and threatening. “You’ll hear from me again.”
With that, he turned and called for Tommy, who emerged with his backpack slung over one shoulder. “Let’s go, Tommy,” he said, his tone leaving no room for argument.
Tommy looked between his dad and Robyn, confusion evident on his face. “But I was having fun!”
“Not anymore,” his dad snapped, ushering him toward the door.
As they left, Greg felt a surge of protectiveness for Robyn and Tommy. He watched Tommy’s dad walk away, the tension lingering in the air long after they had gone.
Robyn closed the door softly, leaning against it as she took a deep breath, trying to process what had just happened. Greg turned to her, concern etched on his face.
“Are you okay?” he asked gently.
“Yeah, I just... I wasn’t expecting that,” she admitted, her voice shaky. “He always finds a way to make everything about him.”
“I’m sorry you had to deal with that,” Greg said, his tone sincere. “You don’t deserve it. Tommy’s a great kid, and you’re doing an amazing job with him.”
Robyn managed a small smile, grateful for his support. “Thank you, Greg. I appreciate you stepping in like that. It means a lot.”
“Anytime,” he replied, his eyes steady and reassuring. “If he ever gives you trouble again, just let me know. I’ll handle it.”
“Honestly, I don’t want to involve you in my mess,” she said, a hint of guilt creeping in.
“It’s not a mess if it’s about protecting Tommy,” Greg replied firmly. “You’re not alone in this, Robyn. Remember that.”
Robyn nodded, feeling a sense of comfort in his words. “You’re right. I just want to create a stable environment for Tommy, and sometimes it feels like I’m fighting an uphill battle.”
Greg stepped closer, his presence grounding. “You’re stronger than you think. And you have people who care about you both. We’ll figure this out".
“Let’s get back to planning for the event,” she suggested, trying to shift the focus back to something positive.
“Absolutely. Let’s make it a day to remember,” Greg agreed, his smile returning as they settled back into their discussion, determined to create a brighter future for Tommy and the community.
