After a morning filled with laughter and the sweet smell of pancakes, the atmosphere in Robyn's apartment had shifted from fear to warmth. Tommy, having finally relaxed, had fallen asleep at the kitchen table, his small body curled up on the chair.
Robyn smiled softly as she watched him, feeling a wave of relief wash over her. She gently lifted him into her arms, careful not to wake him, and carried him to his bedroom. As she tucked him in, she brushed a few strands of hair from his forehead, whispering, “You’re safe now, my love. I’ll always protect you.”
With a lingering glance, she quietly left the room, closing the door softly behind her.
When she returned to the kitchen, Greg was waiting, his expression serious. “Robyn, we need to talk about what happened last night,” he said, his voice low but firm.
“I know,” she replied, her heart sinking as she recalled the confrontation. “But I don’t want to think about it right now.”
“I understand, but you have to call the police and report Tommy’s dad for the assault,” Greg urged, his eyes steady on hers. “It’s important to take action.”
Robyn hesitated, her stomach tightening at the thought. “What if it makes things worse? What if he retaliates?”
“Then we’ll deal with that together,” Greg reassured her. “You can’t let him think he can get away with this. It’s not just about you; it’s about Tommy too.”
Taking a deep breath, she realised he was right. She couldn’t let fear dictate her actions any longer. “Okay. I’ll call them.”
Robyn picked up her phone, her hands shaking slightly as she dialed the local police station. After a few rings, a familiar voice answered.
“Officer Stanton,” the voice said.
“Hi, Paul. It’s Robyn,” she said, trying to keep her voice steady. “I need to report an assault.”
“Robyn? What happened?” Paul’s tone shifted to concern.
She took a moment to gather her thoughts. “Tommy’s dad was here last night. He… he struck me in front of Tommy.”
“I’ll be right over,” Paul said without hesitation. “Stay where you are.”
Within minutes, Officer Paul Stanton arrived at her apartment. He stepped inside, his expression serious but kind. “Robyn, I’m really sorry to hear this,” he said, his eyes scanning the room. “Is Tommy okay?”
“He’s asleep in his room,” she replied, her voice trembling. “He saw everything.”
Paul nodded, understanding the gravity of the situation. “I’ll take your statement first, and then we can talk to Tommy when he wakes up. Is that alright?”
Robyn nodded, grateful for his professionalism. “Thank you, Paul.”
They moved to the living room, where Robyn sat on the couch, her heart racing. She recounted the events of the night, her voice shaking as she described the threats and the violence. Greg put a supportive arm around her and Paul listened attentively, taking notes and nodding in understanding.
“Robyn, I know this is hard, but it’s important,” he said gently. “You’re doing the right thing.”
When she finished, Paul looked her in the eye. “I’m going to issue a no contact order against him. This means he cannot come near you or Tommy. I’ll also be in touch soon for any follow-up questions.”
“Thank you,” she whispered, feeling a small sense of relief. “I just want us to be safe.” Greg gave her a reassuring squeeze.
“You will be,” Paul assured her. “But I also recommend speaking to a solicitor about your options moving forward. It’s important to have legal support.”
After a short while, they heard a soft voice from the hallway. “Mom?” Tommy called sleepily.
Robyn’s heart sank a little, but she took a deep breath. “I’m here, sweetheart. You can come out.”
Tommy appeared in the doorway, rubbing his eyes. Robyn knelt down to his level, offering a comforting smile. “Hey, buddy. I know you’re still tired, but we need to talk for a moment, okay?”
Tommy nodded, looking between his mom, Greg and Officer Stanton, who had remained quiet and respectful.
“Tommy, this is Officer Stanton. He’s here to help us,” Robyn explained gently. “Can you tell him what you saw last night?”
Tommy bit his lip, glancing at Robyn, who nodded encouragingly. “He was really mad,” he said quietly. “He yelled at Mom and… and hit her.”
“Thank you for telling me, Tommy,” Paul said, his voice warm. “I know that was hard, but it’s important. You did the right thing.”
Tommy nodded, his eyes wide and serious.
Once they finished, Paul stood up, giving Tommy a reassuring smile. “You’re a brave kid, Tommy. If you or your mom ever need help, you can always call me, okay?”
“Okay,” Tommy replied softly.
As Paul prepared to leave, Robyn felt a mix of gratitude and apprehension. “Thank you for coming, Paul. I really appreciate it.”
“Anytime, Robyn,” he said, his expression sincere. “I’ll follow up soon. Just remember, you’re not alone in this.”
After he left, Robyn turned to Tommy, who looked up at her with wide eyes. “Mom, are we going to be okay?”
Robyn knelt down beside him, pulling him into her arms. “Yes, sweetheart. We’re going to be okay. I promise. We have each other, and we’ll get through this together.”
Tommy nodded against her shoulder, and for the first time that day, Robyn felt a sense of hope beginning to blossom. They were taking steps to protect themselves, and with Greg by their side, they would face whatever challenges lay ahead.
After Officer Stanton left, the atmosphere in the apartment shifted again, this time filled with a sense of urgency and purpose. Greg stood up, his brow furrowed with determination.
“Robyn,” he began, his tone serious yet gentle, “I think you and Tommy should stay with me for a few days. Just until we can figure things out and make sure you both feel safe.”
Robyn looked at him, her heart racing at the thought. “You mean… move in with you?”
“Not permanently, just temporarily,” Greg clarified quickly. “I want to make sure you’re both safe, especially after what happened last night. You shouldn’t have to worry about running into Tommy’s dad.”
Tommy, still half-asleep, perked up at the mention of Greg. “Are we going to Greg’s house?” he asked, his eyes brightening with excitement.
Robyn smiled softly at her son. “It’s a possibility, but I need to talk to Greg first.”
“Can we, Mom? Please?” Tommy urged, his enthusiasm infectious. “I love hanging out with Greg!”
Robyn couldn’t help but feel a wave of warmth at Tommy’s words. She knew how much he had bonded with Greg over pancakes and their shared laughter that morning. “I know you do, sweetheart,” she said, kneeling down to his level. “But I want to make sure it’s the right decision for us.”
Greg stepped closer, his expression earnest. “I promise I’ll take care of both of you. I just want you to feel safe. We can set up a space for Tommy, and it’ll be fun. Just a little getaway.”
Robyn weighed her options. The thought of being in a different environment, away from the memories of last night, was appealing. But she also wanted to be cautious about moving too quickly in their relationship.
“Okay,” she finally said, looking into Greg’s eyes. “I agree, but only for a few days. I don’t want to rush into living together or anything like that.”
“Absolutely,” Greg replied, relief washing over his face. “Just a few days to help you both feel secure. We can take it one step at a time.”
Tommy jumped up and down, excitement radiating from him. “Yay! I can’t wait!”
Robyn chuckled at her son’s enthusiasm. “Alright, let’s pack some things together,” she said, feeling a sense of resolve. “We’ll need clothes, some of Tommy’s favorite toys, and anything else you want to bring.”
As they moved to gather their belongings, Robyn felt safe with Greg. They worked together, packing a small suitcase for Tommy, filled with his favorite clothes and a few toys. Greg helped, making sure to include a couple of books that Tommy said he loved.
“Do you have everything you need?” Greg asked as he watched Robyn pack her own bag.
“I think so,” she replied, glancing around the apartment. “Just some clothes and essentials. I want to make sure Tommy feels comfortable.”
“Good thinking,” Greg said with a smile. “He’ll have his own space at my place, and I’ll make sure it feels like a home from home for him.”
Once they finished packing, Robyn felt a weight lift off her shoulders. The thought of staying with Greg, even temporarily, felt like a step in the right direction. She could see how happy Tommy was, and that made her heart swell with gratitude.
“Are you ready, buddy?” she asked, looking down at Tommy, who was bouncing on his toes in excitement.
“Ready!” he exclaimed, his eyes sparkling with joy.
“Okay, let’s go then,” Robyn said, feeling a mix of nervousness and excitement. She turned to Greg, who nodded encouragingly.
As they stepped out of the apartment and into the bright daylight, Robyn felt a renewed sense of hope. With each step toward Greg’s apartment, she knew they were taking a positive step forward. They would face the challenges ahead together, and for the first time in a while, she felt a flicker of optimism.
Arriving at Greg’s rented apartment, Robyn was struck by how cozy and inviting it felt. The living room was filled with soft light, and there was a small kitchen area that seemed perfect for family meals.
“Welcome to our temporary home!” Greg announced with a grin, opening the door wide for them.
Tommy rushed inside, exploring the new space with wide-eyed wonder. “This is so cool!” he shouted, running from room to room.
Robyn followed, her heart swelling with affection for both of them. “It really is nice,” she said, glancing at Greg, who was watching Tommy with a smile.
“See? Just a little adventure,” Greg said, stepping closer to Robyn. “We’ll make it work, one day at a time.”
Robyn nodded, feeling a sense of comfort wash over her. “Thank you for this, Greg. It means more than you know.”
“Always,” he replied, his gaze steady and reassuring. “We’re in this together.”
As they settled into their new surroundings, Robyn felt a sense of peace. They were taking the right steps, and with Greg by her side, she felt stronger than ever.
