Later that evening, after a day filled with laughter and exploration in Greg’s cozy apartment, the atmosphere shifted as Tommy finally fell asleep. The soft sound of his breathing filled the room, providing a comforting backdrop as Robyn and Greg settled onto the couch.
Greg glanced over at Robyn, his expression thoughtful. “Robyn, can we talk for a minute?” he asked, his tone serious.
“Of course,” she replied, sensing the weight of the conversation ahead.
He took a deep breath, running a hand through his hair. “I need to get a few things out in the open now that you and Tommy are here. It’s important for us to understand what this means for our relationship moving forward.”
Robyn nodded, her heart racing slightly. “What’s on your mind?”
“Being a professional athlete means that the paparazzi are part of my life,” Greg explained, his gaze steady. “And that also means that you and Tommy could become targets too. The more I’m in the public eye, the greater the risk of them getting wind of you both.”
Robyn’s stomach tightened at the thought. “I hadn’t considered that,” she admitted, her voice barely above a whisper. “I want to protect Tommy from all of this.”
“I understand,” Greg said, leaning closer. “And I want you to know that I’ll do everything I can to keep you both safe. But I also need you to know that it’s going to be a challenge. Once the paparazzi find out about you, they’ll be relentless.”
He paused, taking a moment to gather his thoughts. “There’s something else I need to share. It’s not easy for me to talk about, but I think it’s important for you to understand where I’m coming from.”
Robyn nodded, encouraging him to continue. “I’m here for you, Greg. Whatever you want to share.”
He hesitated for a moment, his gaze drifting to the floor as he gathered his thoughts. “Around eight months ago, my parents were in a car accident. My mom didn’t survive. It was my dad’s fault—he was drinking and lost control of the car.”
Robyn’s heart sank at the revelation. “Oh, Greg… I’m so sorry.”
Greg looked up, his eyes filled with a mix of pain and resolve. “It’s had a huge impact one me, I’ve held a lot of anger towards him ever since. Losing my mom was devastating, and knowing that it was his actions that caused it only made things worse.”
“What happened after the accident?” Robyn asked gently, wanting to understand more.
“He spiraled into depression and continued to drink,” Greg explained, his voice thick with emotion. “I felt abandoned. I couldn’t comprehend how he could keep doing this to himself, especially after what he did to our family. We’ve had a strained relationship ever since.”
Robyn could see the hurt etched on his face, the years of unresolved grief weighing heavily on his heart. “That must have been incredibly difficult for you,” she said softly.
“It was,” he admitted. “But now, after everything that’s happened with Tommy’s dad, I’ve started to see things differently. I realise that my father needs help, just like Tommy does. He’s had another accident due to drinking, which is why, I had to go to Atlanta. It’s made me realise that I can’t abandon him. He needs help. I can’t let my anger keep me from doing what’s right.”
Robyn listened intently, her heart aching for him. “What are you planning to do?”
“I’m going to bring him here and get him into a rehab program,” Greg said, his voice firm but laced with emotion. “I know it’s a lot to take on, especially with everything you and Tommy are dealing with. But I can’t turn my back on him, not after everything.”
“That’s a big decision, Greg,” Robyn said softly. “Are you sure you’re ready for that?”
“I have to be,” he replied, his eyes reflecting a mix of determination and vulnerability. “But I want you to understand that once the paparazzi catch wind of this, they’ll be everywhere. It could complicate things for us, and I completely understand if you don’t want to continue this relationship.”
Robyn felt a rush of emotions—fear, concern, and also a deep sense of connection to Greg. “I appreciate you being honest with me,” she said. “But I also care about you, and I see how much you want to help your dad. It speaks volumes about your character.”
Greg’s expression softened at her words. “I hope you still want to be a part of my life, despite everything. I don’t want to lose you or Tommy, especially after what you’ve both been through.”
Robyn took a moment to consider his words. She knew the challenges they faced, but she also felt a strong bond with Greg. “I want to be with you, Greg. I really do. But we need to be cautious. I don’t want Tommy to feel overwhelmed or unsafe.”
“Absolutely,” he agreed, relief washing over his features. “We’ll take it one step at a time. I’ll do my best to make sure you both feel secure.”
Robyn reached out, taking Greg’s hand in hers. “Thank you for being open with me. I know it’s not easy to share these things, but it means a lot.”
Greg squeezed her hand gently. “We’re in this together, Robyn. I want to build something real with you, but I also want to make sure we’re both ready for what that entails. Let’s take it slow,” Greg suggested, his voice warm. “We have time to navigate this, and I want to make sure you and Tommy feel safe every step of the way.”
“I appreciate that,” Robyn replied, her heart full. “We’ll take it one step at a time, and we’ll face whatever comes our way together.”
As they sat together in the dim light of the apartment, Robyn felt a sense of clarity wash over her. They had challenges ahead, but they were also building a foundation based on honesty and mutual support. With each passing moment, she felt more confident in their choice to move forward together, no matter the obstacles that lay ahead.
