Robyn sat on the edge of her couch, her heart racing as she replayed the confrontation in her mind. Tommy's father had just dropped him off, and the encounter had been worse than ever. His words echoed in her ears, venomous and cutting.
“You’re a w***e for having another man around my son!” he had shouted, his face twisted with rage. “You’re an unfit mother, and I’ll take custody of Tommy if I have to!”
The threat hung in the air like a storm cloud, and just when she thought it couldn’t get worse, he struck her. The sharp pain on her cheek was nothing compared to the anguish in Tommy’s eyes as he witnessed it all. She could still see him standing frozen in the hallway, fear written all over his small face, before he turned and bolted to his room.
“Tommy?” she called gently, her voice trembling. “It’s okay, sweetheart. You can come out now.”
Silence.
“Please, honey. I’m right here,” she pleaded, her heart breaking at the thought of him hiding away, scared and upset. She wanted to comfort him, to tell him everything would be alright, but the truth was that she felt anything but alright.
As tears began to fall, Robyn hugged her knees to her chest, feeling utterly defeated. The weight of the situation pressed down on her, and she struggled to breathe through the despair.
Just then, her phone rang, cutting through the silence. It was Greg. She wiped her tears quickly, not wanting him to hear the tremor in her voice.
“Hey, Greg,” she said, forcing a smile that he couldn’t see.
“Hey! How’s everything going?” he asked, his tone bright but laced with concern.
Robyn hesitated, glancing toward Tommy’s closed door. “Um, it’s fine. Just… the usual.”
“Robyn,” Greg said, his voice turning serious. “You sound off. Is everything really okay?”
She bit her lip, knowing she should protect him from her troubles. He had enough on his plate with his father. “It’s nothing. Just a rough day.”
“Don’t lie to me,” Greg insisted, his voice firm. “What’s going on?”
Robyn’s resolve crumbled under the weight of his concern. She took a deep breath, tears spilling down her cheeks. “It’s Tommy’s dad. He… he was here, and he got violent. He struck me, and Tommy saw it.”
“Robyn!” Greg’s voice was filled with anger and disbelief. “What the hell? Are you okay?”
“I’m fine,” she replied quickly, wiping her tears. “I just… I’m worried about Tommy. He won’t come out of his room.”
“Damn it,” Greg said, his voice low and furious. “This isn’t right. You shouldn’t have to deal with this alone. I’m coming back.”
“What? No, Greg, you don’t have to do that,” she protested, her heart racing at the thought of him dropping everything for her.
“I’m getting the first plane back,” he declared, determination clear in his voice. “I’ll be there first thing in the morning. You and Tommy need me.”
Robyn felt a mix of gratitude and guilt. “I don’t want to burden you with my problems. You have enough to handle with your dad.”
“Robyn, stop it,” he interrupted firmly. “You are not a burden. I care about you and Tommy, and I won’t let you go through this alone. No one should have to live in fear.”
His words wrapped around her like a warm blanket, igniting a flicker of hope in her heart. “Thank you, Greg. I just… I don’t know what I would do without you.”
“Just hang in there. I’ll be there as soon as I can,” he promised. “Keep your phone close, okay? I want to hear from you.”
“Okay,” she whispered, feeling a rush of relief.
As they ended the call, Robyn felt a small spark of strength returning. She wiped her tears and stood up, walking toward Tommy’s room. “Tommy, it’s me. I’m right outside. It's safe. Can you come out, please?”
She waited, her heart pounding, until finally, the door creaked open. Tommy peeked out, his eyes wide with fear.
“Mom?” he said, his voice small.
Robyn knelt down to his level, opening her arms. “It’s okay, sweetheart. I’m here. I’m so sorry you had to see that. It wasn’t your fault.”
Tommy hesitated but then stepped forward, wrapping his small arms around her. She held him tightly, feeling the warmth of his little body against hers.
“We’re going to be okay,” she whispered, trying to reassure both him and herself. “I promise.”
As they stood there, locked in an embrace, Robyn felt a renewed sense of determination. With Greg on his way and Tommy by her side, they would face whatever came next together.
Greg stood outside Robyn’s apartment, his heart racing with a mix of urgency and concern. The early morning air was cool, and he could see his breath in the dim light. He knocked quietly on the door, careful not to disturb Tommy.
Moments later, the door creaked open, and Robyn stood there, her eyes red and puffy from crying. The sight of her vulnerable state made Greg’s heart ache. Without a word, she threw herself into his arms, and he instinctively wrapped her in a tight embrace.
“It’s okay, I’m here,” he murmured, feeling her tremble against him. “Everything is going to be okay.”
Robyn buried her face in his shoulder, her emotions spilling over as she clung to him. “I didn’t want you to come back,” she whispered, her voice muffled. “You have so much going on with your dad.”
“I know, but I couldn’t just sit there knowing you were in trouble,” Greg replied, pulling back slightly to look into her eyes. “You and Tommy are my priority. I won’t let you go through this alone.”
Robyn took a shaky breath, trying to compose herself. “I’m just so scared, Greg. Tommy saw everything, and I don’t know how to help him.”
Greg’s expression softened. “We’ll figure it out together. You’re not alone in this, remember? We’ll talk to Tommy and make sure he feels safe.”
She nodded, grateful for his presence. “Thank you for being here. I don’t know what I would do without you.”
Greg stepped inside the apartment, glancing around to ensure everything was quiet. “Is he still in his room?”
“Yes,” Robyn said, her voice barely above a whisper. “He hasn’t come out since… since it happened.”
“Let’s go talk to him,” Greg suggested gently, leading her toward Tommy’s room. He could sense the tension radiating from her, and he wanted to reassure both her and Tommy.
As they approached the door, Robyn hesitated, anxiety flashing across her face. “What if he doesn’t want to talk?”
“Then we’ll just let him know we’re here for him,” Greg said, giving her a reassuring squeeze. “No pressure. Just love.”
Robyn nodded, taking a deep breath before gently knocking on the door. “Tommy? It’s Mom. Can we come in?”
Silence hung in the air for a moment, and Greg held his breath, hoping for a response. Finally, the door creaked open, revealing Tommy’s small frame, his eyes wide and uncertain.
“Hey, buddy,” Greg said softly, crouching down to Tommy’s level. “It’s me, Greg. Can we come in?”
Tommy looked between his mother and Greg, his expression a mix of fear and confusion. Slowly, he stepped aside, allowing them to enter.
Robyn knelt beside Tommy as Greg settled on the floor across from them. “We just wanted to check in on you,” she said, her voice soothing. “I know things were really scary last night, and I’m so sorry you had to see that.”
Tommy’s gaze dropped to the floor, his little hands fidgeting nervously. “I hate him,” he whispered, his voice trembling.
Robyn felt her heart break for her son. “I know, honey. It’s okay to feel that way. What he did was wrong, and you didn’t deserve to see it.”
Greg leaned in closer, his tone gentle. “Tommy, you’re really brave for talking about your feelings. It’s important to share what you’re going through. We’re here for you, no matter what.”
Tommy looked up, his eyes glistening with unshed tears. “I just want to feel safe,” he admitted, his voice small.
Robyn reached out, pulling Tommy into her arms. “You are safe, sweetheart. I promise. Greg and I are going to make sure of it. We’re a team, and we’ll protect each other.”
Greg nodded, feeling a surge of determination. “Exactly. No one is going to hurt you or your mom again. We’ll figure this out together, I promise.”
Tommy sniffled, leaning into Robyn’s embrace. “Can we do something fun today?” he asked, his voice hopeful.
“Of course,” Greg said, a smile breaking through the tension. “How about we make breakfast together? I can whip up some pancakes, and we can add chocolate chips. Sound good?”
Tommy’s face brightened at the idea, a glimmer of excitement breaking through his fear. “Yeah! I love pancakes!”
“Then it’s settled,” Robyn said, wiping her own tears away and smiling at her son. “Let’s make the best pancakes ever.”
As they stood together in that small room, the weight of the night’s events began to lift, replaced by a sense of unity and hope. With Greg by their side, Robyn felt a renewed strength. They would face whatever came next together.
“Let’s go make some pancakes,” Greg said, standing up and extending a hand to Tommy. “Together.”
Tommy took Greg’s hand, and Robyn followed, feeling a warmth spread through her heart. They were ready to reclaim their joy, one pancake at a time.
