Chapter 5 - A Light Skate

Robyn pushed open the door to Maggie's Café, the familiar scent of coffee and baked goods wrapping around her like a warm hug. She needed a moment to breathe, to gather her thoughts after the chaotic morning. As she approached the counter, she could feel the weight of the world pressing down on her shoulders. “Maggie!” she called, forcing a smile despite the turmoil inside. “Can I get a coffee and one of those blueberry muffins?” “Coming right up!” Maggie replied, her eyes sparkling with warmth. She could see that Robyn was on edge, and her heart went out to her friend. As Robyn settled onto a stool at the counter, she began to share her frustrations with Maggie. “You won’t believe what happened this morning. Tommy’s dad showed up, and it was just… ugh! He pushed me against the wall, Maggie! Like he thinks he can intimidate me just because he’s his father.” Maggie’s expression shifted from concern to anger. “That’s unacceptable, Robyn. You deserve so much better than that,” she said, wiping her hands on her apron as she leaned closer. “You should report him. No one should treat you that way.” Before Robyn could respond, she felt a hulking presence behind her. She turned slightly, her heart racing as she recognised Greg standing there, his expression severe. He looked extremely displeased, and she felt her stomach drop. “Good morning” Maggie said, her voice brightening as she tried to mask her surprise. “Welcome to my café! Take a seat, and I’ll be with you in just a moment.” Greg nodded but didn’t take his eyes off Robyn. He moved to a seat a few stools down, his posture tense. Maggie hurriedly took his order, her excitement evident as she tried to maintain her composure around him. Once Maggie was busy making Greg’s drink, he turned his attention back to Robyn. “I heard what you said,” he said, his voice low but firm. “What Tommy’s dad did is completely out of line.” Robyn felt her heart race at his words. “I know, but it’s complicated,” she replied, feeling overwhelmed. “He’s Tommy’s father, and I can’t just—” “No excuses,” Greg interrupted, his tone sharp. “No man should behave that way to a woman, especially not the mother of his child. You have every right to stand up for yourself.” Robyn felt heat rise to her cheeks, a mix of gratitude and embarrassment flooding her system. She appreciated his support, but the intensity of the conversation was too much. “I… I just need to figure things out,” she stammered, her voice wavering. Maggie returned with Greg’s coffee, her enthusiasm momentarily distracting Robyn. “Here you go! One coffee for the man of the hour!” she said brightly, trying to keep the mood light. “Thanks,” Greg replied, but his gaze remained fixed on Robyn, concern etched on his face. Feeling cornered by the weight of their conversation and the intensity of Greg’s stare, Robyn’s heart raced. She couldn’t handle this right now—not the confrontation with her ex, not the pressure of Greg’s expectations, and certainly not the way he seemed to care. “I need to go,” she blurted out, standing up abruptly. “Thanks for the coffee, Maggie. I’ll see you later.” “Robyn, wait!” Maggie called after her, but Robyn was already out the door, her breath coming in quick gasps as she stepped into the cool morning air. She walked quickly, trying to put distance between herself and the café, her mind swirling with confusion. Why had Greg’s words affected her so deeply? She didn’t want to feel vulnerable, especially not in front of him. As she made her way down the street, she tried to focus on her breathing, but the image of Greg’s concerned expression lingered in her mind. It was a reminder of everything she was trying to avoid—complications, feelings, and the very real fear of being hurt again. Robyn knew she had to regain her footing, but the world felt unsteady beneath her. She couldn’t afford to let her emotions run wild. Not now. Not when she had Tommy to think about. With each step, she resolved to find strength within herself, to stand tall for her son. But deep down, she couldn’t shake the feeling that this was only the beginning of a much larger battle—one that would test her in ways she never expected. Finding Solace on Ice Robyn headed to the ice rink, She felt a sense of calm wash over her as she stepped onto the ice. This was her sanctuary—a place where she could lose herself in the rhythm of skating and leave her worries behind, if only for a little while. As she glided across the surface, she spotted her friend Samantha, or “Sammy” as everyone called her, practicing her own routine at the far end of the rink. Sammy was an exceptional skater, her movements fluid and graceful, and Robyn felt a wave of relief wash over her as they exchanged smiles. “Hey, Robyn!” Sammy called out, her voice bright against the backdrop of the rink. “Ready to show off your routine?” “Always!” Robyn replied, feeling a spark of excitement. She moved toward Sammy, the cold air invigorating her as she prepared to practice her own routine. As they skated together, Robyn felt the tension from earlier begin to melt away. They chatted about various things including what things going on in each others lives and the upcoming charity skating event for the local dog shelter, a cause close to both their hearts. “I can’t believe it’s just a week away!” Sammy exclaimed, her eyes shining. “It’s going to be such a fun night. I heard they’re planning some great performances.” “Yeah, I’m really looking forward to it,” Robyn said, focusing on her footwork as she practiced a jump. “It’ll be nice to do something positive, especially after everything that’s been going on.” Sammy nodded, her expression turning serious. “I'm sorry about Tommy's dad. Are you okay? You can always talk to me, you know that.” Robyn hesitated, trying to find the right words. “I just… I don’t understand how he can act like that. He’s supposed to be there for Tommy, and yet he treats me like I’m nothing.” “Robyn, his behavior is completely unacceptable,” Sammy replied, her tone firm. “You deserve someone who respects you, especially as Tommy’s mom. You’re doing an amazing job raising him.” Robyn felt a swell of gratitude for Sammy’s support. “Thanks, Sammy. It means a lot to have you in my corner. I just want to protect Tommy from all this negativity.” “Of course! And you’re doing a great job,” Sammy reassured her. “But remember, you don’t have to do it alone. I’m here for you both.” With renewed determination, Robyn pushed herself harder on the ice, executing her routine with precision. The music echoed in her mind, and she lost herself in the rhythm, each glide and spin helping to clear her head. As they finished their practice, Sammy skated over, her cheeks flushed from the exertion. “So, are you going to perform at the charity event?” she asked, her excitement palpable. “Definitely! I’ve been working on a new routine that I think will really resonate with the audience. Plus, it’s for a good cause,” Robyn replied, feeling a spark of inspiration. “I want to show everyone that we can make a difference, even in small ways.” “Absolutely! And maybe we can even get Tommy involved somehow,” Sammy suggested, her eyes lighting up. “Maybe the hockey teams could do a little demonstration or something. Kids love that!” Robyn smiled at the idea, envisioning Tommy’s bright smile as he skated alongside her. “That would be amazing! I’ll ask him the coaches if they want to join in.” As they wrapped up their practice, Robyn felt lighter, the weight of her earlier frustrations beginning to lift. With Sammy by her side, she felt a sense of camaraderie that reminded her she wasn’t alone in this journey. “Let’s head to the diner for some hot chocolate after this,” Sammy suggested, her tone playful. “We deserve a treat after all this hard work!” “Sounds perfect!” Robyn replied, her spirits lifting. As they skated toward the exit, Robyn couldn’t help but feel a sense of hope. The charity event was just around the corner, and for the first time in a while, she felt like she was moving forward. With Sammy’s support and the promise of a brighter day ahead, Robyn was ready to face whatever challenges lay ahead, one glide at a time.
