The air grew colder.
The sound of the vampire howling spread through the trees like a warning. Every wolf in the pack lowered into a crouch, their teeth bared, their growls vibrating in the night.
Ravenna’s stomach tightened. She knew what was coming. Wolves and vampires never met without blood spilling.
Kael moved in front of her, his golden eyes scanning the trees. His body was tense, ready to fight. His hand still gripped her arm, and even with danger all around, he did not let go.
Shapes began to form between the trees. Tall figures stepped out, their pale faces sharp and their eyes glowing red in the darkness. The vampires had come.
The one in front smiled, his fangs flashing. “Alpha Kael,” he said smoothly. “What a surprise to find you here… guarding what is ours.”
Kael’s growl was low and threatening. “She is not yours.”
The vampire’s smile widened. “She is half our blood. That makes her ours. You wolves cannot protect her from what she is.”
Ravenna’s pulse hammered in her chest. She wanted to pull free, to run, but she knew there was nowhere to go. Both sides wanted her. Both sides would kill to claim her.
Kael took a step forward, his chest broad, his presence filling the clearing. “If you want her,” he said, “you will have to go through me.”
The vampire laughed, the sound cold and cruel. “So the Alpha has claimed the hybrid. How amusing. How… weak.”
The wolves behind Kael growled louder, their claws digging into the ground. The tension was sharp, the air thick with the promise of blood.
Ravenna’s breath came fast. She had to think. If they fought now, she would be caught in the middle. She might not survive either side.
Kael leaned close to her ear, his voice low and hard. “Stay behind me.”
She wanted to argue, to tell him she could take care of herself. But the truth was, she could not. Not against this many. Her powers were strong, but untrained. And tonight, she was too tired from running.
The vampire leader raised his hand. “Take her.”
In an instant, the clearing exploded.
Wolves lunged forward, their bodies shifting midair, fur bursting through skin, claws flashing. Snarls filled the night.
The vampires moved just as fast, their bodies blurring into streaks of shadow and red eyes. They met the wolves with sharp fangs and cold strength.
The first clash shook the forest.
Ravenna stumbled back as chaos erupted around her. Wolves slammed into vampires, tearing and biting. Vampires struck back with speed and precision, their movements almost too fast to follow.
Kael shifted in a blink. His massive wolf form hit the ground, black fur streaked with crimson, eyes glowing like fire. His growl shook the trees.
He tore into the first vampire that came too close, his jaws snapping around its arm and ripping it away in a spray of blood.
Ravenna’s heart pounded. She bent to grab her fallen dagger, her hand shaking. If either side reached her, she would need to fight.
A vampire lunged at her from the side. She raised the dagger just in time, stabbing upward. The blade sank into his chest, and the vampire hissed in pain before crumbling into ash.
Her chest heaved. She had killed before, but it never got easier.
Another came for her. This time, she was too slow. Cold hands grabbed her shoulders, sharp fangs diving for her throat.
Before they could sink in, Kael’s massive wolf slammed into the vampire, crushing him to the ground. His jaws closed around the vampire’s neck, snapping bone.
Kael’s golden eyes burned as he looked at her. Even in the middle of the fight, even covered in blood, his gaze pinned her in place.
Mine.
The word was not spoken, but she felt it all the same.
Another vampire rushed him, and Kael spun, tearing into the enemy without hesitation.
Ravenna’s body shook. She wanted to run. She wanted to hide. But deep inside, another part of her stirred. A darker, hungrier part. Her vampire blood.
Her senses sharpened. She could hear every heartbeat, smell every drop of blood spilled into the earth. Her teeth ached, her throat burned.
“No,” she whispered, shaking her head. She could not give in. If she did, she would lose control.
But her wolf side growled inside her, ready to fight. Ready to tear and claw.
The two halves of her blood warred within her.
Suddenly, hands grabbed her from behind. A vampire had slipped past the fight and caught her. His grip was like iron, dragging her back toward the trees.
Ravenna thrashed, stabbing her dagger, but the vampire knocked it away. His cold breath brushed her ear as he hissed, “You belong to us.”
Kael roared. He turned, his massive wolf form leaping toward them, but three more vampires blocked his path. They swarmed him, claws and fangs slashing.
The vampire dragged Ravenna deeper into the forest, faster than she could fight. Her lungs burned, her body straining.
She tried to scream, but his hand covered her mouth. Her heart pounded as she realize
d the truth.
She was being taken.
And this time, Kael might not reach her in time.
