Ravenna sat by the stream, her body shaking. The forest felt heavy, as if the trees themselves had seen her burst of power. The ground was still scorched where her energy had exploded.
Her claws were gone now. Her fangs had retreated. But the fear in her chest did not fade.
She wrapped her arms around herself.
What if the woman was right?
What if she was becoming exactly what the queen wanted her to be?
Her heart ached at the thought. She had always run from her blood. From her wolf. From her vampire side. But tonight, she had killed without thinking. She had destroyed without control.
A low growl rolled through the trees.
Ravenna’s head snapped up, her body tense. For a moment, fear gripped her. But then she saw the glow of golden eyes.
Kael stepped out of the shadows. His wolf form was massive, blood on his fur, his breath ragged. Behind him, two wolves limped, wounded but alive. The others… she did not know if they had survived.
Her chest tightened. Relief and dread warred inside her.
Kael’s wolf eyes locked on her, fierce and burning. He shifted before her eyes, his body changing back to the man. His skin was marked with cuts and bruises, blood dripping from a gash on his shoulder. But even hurt, he stood strong.
And he was furious.
“You ran,” he growled, his voice low and sharp. “In the middle of battle. You left me.”
Ravenna’s throat closed. She wanted to speak, but the words stuck.
Kael stepped closer, his golden eyes never leaving hers. “Do you understand what could have happened? Lucian almost had you. The queen’s envoy almost took you. If I had not tracked your scent—”
He cut himself off, his jaw tight. His rage burned, but there was something else under it. Something raw.
Ravenna forced herself to speak. Her voice trembled. “I could not stay. I could not… watch you fight for me. I cannot belong to you, Kael.”
His eyes flared. He moved so fast she gasped. One second he was a few steps away. The next, he was right before her, his hand gripping her arm, pulling her close.
“You are mine,” he snarled. “I do not care if you run. I do not care if you fight me. You are mine.”
Her breath caught. She could feel his heat, smell his blood and his wolf scent. Her heart raced wildly, the bond pulling at her with brutal force.
She shook her head, her voice breaking. “I do not want this bond. I did not choose it.”
Kael’s grip softened, just slightly. His golden eyes searched hers, fierce and pained. “Do you think I chose this?” he said, his voice rough. “The bond does not ask. It does not care what we want. It is fate. And fate is cruel. But it is also unbreakable.”
Ravenna’s chest ached. She wanted to deny it, to push him away. But the truth burned in her veins. Every time he was near, her blood sang. Every time his eyes locked on hers, her wolf whispered one word. Mate.
Her voice cracked. “I am not like you. I am not just a wolf. I am dangerous, Kael. I am both worlds. And both want me dead.”
His jaw clenched. He lifted her chin with rough fingers, forcing her to meet his eyes. “Then let them come. I will kill anyone who touches you.”
Her heart twisted. His words should have frightened her. They should have felt like chains. But instead, something deep inside her trembled with a dangerous warmth.
“Why?” she whispered. “Why fight for me? I am nothing to you.”
Kael’s gaze darkened. His voice was almost a growl. “You are everything to me.”
Her breath caught. Her chest felt too tight. She wanted to scream, to run, to deny it. But before she could answer, the trees around them rustled.
Kael turned at once, pulling her behind him, his body tense. His wolf was close to the surface, his eyes glowing.
A faint laugh echoed through the night. Cold. Mocking. Familiar.
Ravenna froze.
Lucian.
He stepped from the shadows, his white hair gleaming in the moonlight. His body bore wounds from the fight, but his cruel smile remained.
“You can run all you want, sister,” Lucian said softly. “But you cannot hide. The queen will have you. And if Kael wants to fight fate, then he will die for you.”
Kael growled, his claws half-formed, his rage burning.
Ravenna’s blood turned to ice. She was caught between them once again—the Alpha who claimed her and the brother who wanted to deliver her to darkness.
And she knew the night was far from over.
