After my classes were finished I went back to my dorm room. Kate came back a few hours later to find me sprawled across my bed reading. I put my book down to talk about our days. I told her about the annoying coffee shop guy. I didn't even bother telling her his name. Then I went back to my book.
She flopped down beside me and laid her head on my shoulder. "Why do you always have to live in there? Katie needs some love too you know." she said teasingly. A big grin formed across her face. I know that look. "So I was thinking.."
"Nope." I cut her off before she could finish her sentence and shook my head. "We are not doing this tonight, Kate."
"Oh come on! One little party so I can introduce you to this cute guy in my English literature class. You will never meet 'Mr. Right' sitting around here reading all the time, Millie." She walked over to the closet and began sifting through her dresses.
As much as I hated it, she was right. I had to socialize at some point. I rolled my eyes at her as she held up a blue dress towards me and threw in her best puppy face for good measure. "I'll go for an hour." She squealed in excitement and threw the dress to me.
"It will be so much fun, I promise!" As she began searching for her own dress, I pulled off my clothes and slid the dress on. It was the right amount of tight to be sexy, but still modest. Kate knew me well. After she slipped into her dress we did our hair and makeup before leaving for the party.

Kate was distracted with her 'boy of the month' as she called them, so I decided to grab another drink. I was reaching for a cup when I heard a familiar voice behind me. "I wouldn't have thought this was your scene." I turned to see Jordan's smirk.
"Shows how much you don't know about someone you've only known 12 hours." I roll my eyes and turn back to get my drink.
"Why don't you like me?" His question caught me off guard. I paused for a minute before turning back to face him. His smirk was gone and curiosity replaced it. I could tell he wasn't used to rejection.
"I know what I want. It's not that I don't like you," tolerated was more like it, "I just don't want to waste time on something I don't want." My words sent a wave of disappointment across his face, but he quickly composed himself.
"All I asked was for us to be friends. I never said I was interested in being your 'epic love' or anything." He said in a mocking tone, smirking at me once more. Either he was still flirting, or I was way better at reading books than people.
"Friendships with boys like you always turn complicated. You can't help but try to chase the one girl who doesn't fall for your so called 'charms.' I don't have time for those games. Excuse me, I need to find my friend." I pushed past him and walked back to Kate.
"Ugh! That guy is so frustratingly annoying!" I say as she turns to look at me. "Coffee shop guy is trying to flirt with me. Again. I think I'm going to head out. I'm just not feeling it tonight."
"Come on, Mills! Don't let one dude ruin your whole night. Come dance with me!" She grabbed my hands and began jumping around throw her hips back and forth. I felt a smile spread across my face as I shook my head yes. She always knew how to cheer me up.
We danced until our bodies were too tired to dance anymore. My cheeks hurt from smiling and laughing so much. We joined her group of friends in the sitting room. Sitting on the couch, I realized across from us was him. Jordan.
"Oh! Millie I almost forgot! The guy I wanted you to meet," she gestures towards him, "Millie meet Jordan. Jordan, this is Millie." Kate seemed proud of herself for finding him. It almost saddened me to have to ruin her hard work trying to find me a boyfriend.
"It's nice to meet you, Millie." Jordan smiled at me, winking when Kate looked away. I tried my hardest not to roll my eyes or say what I was really thinking. Smug jerk. I'd play along for Kate's sake. For now.
"Hi," I said in my best customer service voice, "nice to meet you." Kate was pleased so far. She stood, giving me two thumbs up before walking over to the boy she was with earlier. Jordan stood, walking over to sit beside me on the couch. I crossed my arms across my chest.
He leaned in to whisper to me, "I'm sorry for how I acted towards you. I didn't mean to make you uncomfortable or anything." His voice sounded sincere. "Can we start over? I really would like to be your friend. Just.. friends."
I pondered his words for a moment. I guess it wouldn't hurt to be friends. Now that the ground rules were set, he knew where I stood. There was nothing more between us but a possible friendship.
"Ok, fine. We can be friends. No funny business, though." I say the last part sternly. He smiles at my words as I hold my hand out to him. He grabs it with his hand, and we shake on it. "Friends." we say together.
