Chapter 27 — Identity In The System

The message on Maya's laptop seemed to glow in the darkness. RICHARD CROSS — ACTIVE CONNECTION LOCATION: VALE ESTATE Seraphina stared at the screen. For several seconds, she couldn't speak. Her mother was at the estate. The hidden room was there. Her father's secrets were there. And now someone was accessing a system that belonged to a supposedly dead man. Seraphina: “Take us back.” Damian was already moving. Damian: “We're leaving.” Gabriel remained beside Edward's body for one final moment. His expression was unreadable. Then he stood. Gabriel: “We can't leave him here.” Damian looked at him. Damian: “We don't have time.” Gabriel: “If Aurelius finds his body, they'll know what he told us.” Seraphina looked at Edward. His final words continued to echo in her mind. The person you trust. She didn't know whether he had been warning her about someone specific or trying to confuse them before he died. But she knew one thing. They had to get back to the estate. Now. The drive was silent. Damian drove faster than usual. Maya monitored the connection from the passenger seat. Gabriel sat in the back. Seraphina stared through the window, trying to make sense of everything. Richard's account was active. Someone was inside her home. Someone had access to the old Cross systems. And Edward had claimed that her father had given Damian a key without telling him. The secrets were becoming impossible to separate. Seraphina: “Maya.” Maya: “Yes?” Seraphina: “Can you determine what Richard's account accessed?” Maya checked the laptop. Maya: “It's moving through the estate's security system.” Damian: “Can it control the cameras?” Maya: “Yes.” Seraphina's stomach tightened. Seraphina: “Then whoever is inside can see us coming.” Maya nodded. Maya: “Probably.” Damian looked at the rearview mirror. Damian: “Can you shut the system down?” Maya: “If I do, we lose the feed.” Seraphina: “Do it.” Maya immediately disconnected. The screen went black. Maya: “Done.” Seraphina looked ahead. The estate was less than ten minutes away. She remembered the last time she had been there. Her mother had finally told her about Charles. The gunshots had forced them into the hidden passage. Now the house seemed different. Not like a home. Like a battlefield. They arrived without headlights. Damian stopped several hundred feet from the estate. No lights were visible. No guards. No vehicles. Seraphina's instincts immediately screamed that something was wrong. Seraphina: “Nobody moves until we know what's inside.” Gabriel looked at her. Gabriel: “Good.” Damian gave her a brief look of approval. They approached the house on foot. The front door was unlocked. Seraphina's heart began pounding. Damian: “Stay behind me.” She gave him a look. Damian: “Beside me.” A faint smile crossed her face. Seraphina: “Better.” They entered. The entrance hall was dark. Too quiet. Seraphina called softly. Seraphina: “Mom?” No answer. They checked the living room. Empty. Kitchen. Empty. Study. Empty. Then Maya stopped. Maya: “Wait.” She pointed toward the floor. There were muddy footprints leading toward the staircase. Seraphina crouched. The prints were fresh. Seraphina: “At least two people.” Damian looked toward the upper floor. Damian: “Maybe more.” They moved upstairs. The hallway was empty. Seraphina noticed the door to her mother's room was open. She rushed inside. The room was empty. The bed had been disturbed. A broken lamp lay on the floor. Her mother's phone was on the nightstand. Seraphina picked it up. The screen was cracked. Her heart dropped. Seraphina: “Mom.” Damian searched the room. Damian: “No blood.” Gabriel examined the floor. Gabriel: “No signs of a struggle here.” Seraphina looked at him. Seraphina: “Then where is she?” A faint sound came from behind the wall. Everyone froze. Maya whispered. Maya: “Did you hear that?” Another sound. Three knocks. Then silence. Seraphina walked toward the wall. Seraphina: “Mom?” Three knocks came again. Damian immediately examined the wall. Damian: “There's a hollow space.” Gabriel found a hidden latch behind the bookshelf. The wall opened. A narrow passage appeared. Seraphina stepped inside. It led toward the older part of the estate. The same hidden network her father had used. Seraphina: “This wasn't on the original plans.” Gabriel shook his head. Gabriel: “Your father built it later.” They followed the passage. The knocking became louder. Then they reached a locked steel door. Damian forced it open. Inside, Seraphina's mother was sitting against the wall. Her hands were tied. Her face was pale. Seraphina: “Mom!” Seraphina rushed toward her. Damian cut the restraints. Her mother immediately grabbed Seraphina's hands. Seraphina's Mother: “You shouldn't have come back.” Seraphina: “Who did this?” Her mother looked at Gabriel. Fear appeared in her eyes. Seraphina's Mother: “He came looking for you.” Seraphina's expression hardened. Seraphina: “Who?” Her mother swallowed. Seraphina's Mother: “Richard.” The room went silent. Damian stepped forward. Damian: “You saw him?” Her mother nodded. Seraphina's Mother: “Yes.” Damian's face changed. Damian: “What did he look like?” Her mother hesitated. Seraphina's Mother: “Older.” She looked toward Gabriel. Seraphina's Mother: “But it was him.” Seraphina's heart raced. Seraphina: “What did he want?” Her mother looked at her. Seraphina's Mother: “You.” Damian's expression darkened. Damian: “Why?” Her mother shook her head. Seraphina's Mother: “He said he needed to speak to Seraphina before Aurelius found her.” Gabriel stepped closer. Gabriel: “Did he hurt you?” Seraphina's Mother: “No.” She looked confused. Seraphina's Mother: “That's what frightened me.” Seraphina frowned. Seraphina: “What do you mean?” Her mother took a shaky breath. Seraphina's Mother: “He could have killed me.” She looked at Damian. Seraphina's Mother: “He didn't.” Then she looked back at Seraphina. Seraphina's Mother: “He told me he was trying to protect you.” Seraphina felt a chill. Richard was alive. And he was looking for her. But was he protecting her? Or hunting her? Maya interrupted. Maya: “There is something else.” She held up her laptop. Maya: “Richard's account just accessed another file.” Seraphina: “Which one?” Maya turned the screen. A single title appeared. PROJECT ASCENSION — FINAL AUTHORIZATION Seraphina's heart stopped. Seraphina: “Open it.” Maya clicked. The file required two biometric signatures. The first was hers. The second belonged to Richard. But beneath them was a third field. LEGACY AUTHORIZATION Maya frowned. Maya: “I've never seen this before.” Seraphina looked at the screen. Seraphina: “Can you access it?” Maya: “No.” Damian: “Why?” Maya pointed. Maya: “It requires a biological family match.” Seraphina stared at the words. Seraphina: “Family match to whom?” Maya's fingers moved across the keyboard. The system began searching. Then the result appeared. MATCH FOUND. Seraphina leaned closer. Her eyes widened. The system displayed a name. SAMUEL VALE. Her father. She stepped backward. Seraphina: “That's impossible.” Maya shook her head. Maya: “The system believes your father's biometric authorization is still active.” Damian stared at the screen. Damian: “But Samuel is dead.” Gabriel's expression became grim. Gabriel: “Unless he wasn't.” Seraphina turned toward him. Seraphina: “What are you saying?” Gabriel shook his head. Gabriel: “I'm saying the system may not be detecting your father.” He looked at the screen. Gabriel: “It may be detecting someone who has access to his biological profile.” Seraphina's mind raced. Someone had been using dead people's identities. Richard's account. Her father's authorization. Edward's credentials. Maybe the deaths themselves had been part of the plan. Seraphina: “They've been hiding behind the dead.” Damian looked at her. Seraphina: “Richard's identity. My father's identity. Maybe even others.” Maya nodded slowly. Maya: “Someone has been using old identities to access the network.” Then the computer beeped. A new message appeared. Everyone stared. FINAL AUTHORIZATION REQUESTED. Below it: SERAPHINA VALE — ACCEPT? Seraphina didn't touch the screen. Damian: “Don't.” She looked at him. Damian: “We don't know what activating it will do.” Seraphina nodded. Seraphina: “You're right.” A second message appeared. AUTHORIZATION WILL EXPIRE IN 60 SECONDS. Maya looked alarmed. Maya: “It's counting down.” Seraphina stared at the screen. If she didn't authorize it, they might lose access forever. If she did, she could activate the very technology Aurelius had been hunting. Damian: “Seraphina, don't let them force you into making a decision.” She looked at him. His voice was calm. Steady. Damian: “Whatever happens, we'll find another way.” The countdown continued. Seraphina looked at her mother. Then Maya. Then Gabriel. Finally, she looked at Damian. Seraphina: “My father spent years protecting this technology.” Damian nodded. Seraphina: “He trusted me with it.” Damian: “Yes.” Seraphina: “Then I'm not going to destroy his work.” She turned toward the screen. Seraphina: “I'm going to understand it.” She reached toward the authorization field. Damian caught her wrist. Not to stop her. To make sure she looked at him first. Damian: “Whatever happens next…” His voice softened. Damian: “You don't face it alone.” Seraphina held his gaze. Then she nodded. She placed her hand on the scanner. The system recognized her immediately. SERAPHINA VALE — VERIFIED. The countdown disappeared. A new message appeared. SECOND AUTHORIZATION DETECTED. Everyone froze. Seraphina looked at Damian. Seraphina: “Richard?” The screen displayed another name. Not Richard. Not her father. Not Damian. A name none of them expected. ISABELLE LAURENT. Seraphina's blood ran cold. Seraphina: “Isabelle…” The woman who had betrayed her. The woman who had helped plan the yacht explosion. The woman who had disappeared. The system had just identified her as an authorized member of Project Ascension. And suddenly, Seraphina understood. Isabelle had never been just a traitor. She had been part of the project long before the yacht exploded. The question was no longer whether Isabelle had betrayed Seraphina. It was why.
