Chapter Fifteen
David was in bed asleep when I finally got home. I gave him a sloppy kiss on the cheek to wake him up. He laughed and waved me away.
“I love you,” I said.
“You, too.”
“Hey, David,” I said as I sat on the edge of his bed.
“Mom, I’ve got school in the morning,” he mumbled.
“Do you remember me saying goodnight to you when you were a kid?” I asked. “Like something we did every night. See you later, alligator. After while, crocodile. Etc.”
He turned toward me but kept his eyes closed.
“No,” he said. “That’s from your movie Love and Other Insanities.”
“The other night Fern asked me to say that with her,” she said, “like we used to do when she was a kid. Only I never did that with her.”
“You did with Alberto,” he said. “Not that I remember.”
