Chapter Six – A War of Men

866 Words
The moment Ryan stormed into the penthouse, I knew everything was about to fall apart. His wild eyes locked onto mine, his fists still pressed against the table as his chest rose and fell with ragged breaths. He wasn’t just angry. He was furious. “Get. Away. From. Him.” His voice was low and seething, barely restrained. Beside me, Damien Blackwood stood perfectly still. No panic. No concern. Just a cold, assessing stare, like he was calculating his next move. And somehow, that terrified me more than Ryan’s rage. The Standoff “Ryan,” I whispered, trying to calm him. “What are you doing here?” His jaw clenched. “What am I doing here? Are you kidding me, Soph? I should be asking you that!” I flinched. Damien’s smooth voice cut through the tension like a blade. “I’d suggest lowering your voice,” he said, stepping away from the table. Unbothered. Controlled. “You’re in my home. And I don’t take kindly to uninvited guests.” Ryan turned on him, eyes blazing. “I don’t give a damn about your rules, Blackwood.” The name dripped with hatred. Damien simply arched a brow, his expression unreadable. “Is that so?” he murmured. Ryan’s hands curled into fists. I knew my brother. I knew his hot temper and the reckless way he threw himself into fights without thinking. And I knew Damien. The way he never raised his voice, the way his silence felt more dangerous than shouting ever could. This wasn’t just an argument. This was a war waiting to explode. A Desperate Plea I stepped between them, placing a hand on Ryan’s chest. “Please,” I begged. “Not here.” He stiffened beneath my touch. “Not here?” His voice cracked. “Soph, do you have any idea who you’re dealing with?” I hesitated. Because the truth was, I didn’t. Ryan let out a bitter laugh, shaking his head. “Damien Blackwood isn’t some businessman, Sophia. He’s a monster. A manipulative, ruthless bastard who gets what he wants no matter what it costs.” Silence fell over the room. The tension was suffocating. I could feel Damien watching me, waiting for my reaction. But I didn’t know what to say. Because a part of me wondered if Ryan was right. Damien’s Warning Damien exhaled slowly, adjusting his cuffs. “I see you’ve done your research,” he said, voice like silk. “That’s cute.” Ryan’s nostrils flared. “I know what you did to Alexander West.” I felt Damien’s energy shift. It was subtle, but it was there. Like a predator sizing up his prey. “I warned you to lower your voice,” Damien said calmly. Ryan ignored him. “You think you’re untouchable,” he sneered. “But you’re not. And I won’t let you drag my sister into whatever twisted game you’re playing.” I felt my stomach drop. This wasn’t just about me. This was about Ryan going up against Damien Blackwood. And no one went up against Damien and walked away unscathed. A Dangerous Offer Damien sighed, running a hand through his dark hair. “Since I’m feeling generous tonight,” he said, “I’ll make you a deal.” Ryan’s shoulders tensed. “I don’t want your damn money, Blackwood.” Damien’s lips curved slightly. “Who said anything about money?” He turned to me, his gray eyes locking onto mine. “You want to leave, Sophia?” he asked smoothly. “Go.” My breath hitched. “What?” Damien leaned against the table, his fingers grazing the rim of his untouched wine glass. “I won’t stop you,” he said, tilting his head. “Walk out that door, and you’re free.” Ryan grabbed my wrist. “Let’s go.” But something about Damien’s calmness felt wrong. Like this was too easy. “What’s the catch?” I asked, my voice barely above a whisper. Damien’s lips curled at the edges. “You don’t come back,” he said. “Ever.” My heart stopped. He met my gaze, unflinching. Waiting. Testing. “Make your choice, Sophia.” The Choice That Could Change Everything I looked at Ryan, his worried expression, his grip still tight on my wrist. I looked at Damien, unmoving, unreadable, but waiting. If I left now, I could be free. But if I walked away, it meant never seeing him again. Never knowing what this strange, dangerous connection between us could have become. And worse? It meant I wouldn’t have Damien’s protection. Ryan was in danger. Damien had said it himself. If I left… would Ryan get himself killed? Was I willing to take that risk? I sucked in a breath, my heart pounding. And then, I slowly pulled my wrist from Ryan’s grasp. His face fell. “Sophia,” he whispered. But I had already turned back to Damien. And with a voice steady and unshaken, I said, “I’m staying.” Ryan stared at me, stunned. And Damien? His smirk deepened, his victory sealed. Because he had known all along. I had never really had a choice.
