CHAPTER 6 - THE SHIELD

883 Words
Sophia didn't look back. She couldn't. The marble cathedral of the Kingston lobby had transformed into a cage closing in around her. Her immaculate professional armor shattered in a heartbeat. She was no longer a sought-after architect defending a multi-million-dollar blueprint. She was a mother, driven by a raw, primal instinct that screamed a single command: Protect him. She scooped Leo up into her arms, pulling his small body against hers with a desperate, crushing strength. As she did, her leather portfolio slipped. Months of sleepless nights and calculations meant to secure her financial independence went clattering across the polished floor. Blueprints scattered like autumn leaves. She didn’t even glance down. Let the papers ruin. Let the contract burn. The entire Kingston empire wasn't worth a single hair on her son's head. "Mommy, your drawings!" Leo whimpered. He buried his face deep into her neck, his tiny fingers bunching the wool of her coat. He could feel the violent, erratic thudding of her heart, and the sudden shift in her energy terrified him. Sophia had shielded him from everything—from the cold, the rain, and the burning shame of the past. To Leo, his mother was an unbreakable castle. To feel her trembling like this was like watching the sky collapse. "It’s okay, my love. Leave them. Just hold onto Mommy," Sophia whispered, her voice a strained, ragged breath. She burst through the heavy revolving glass doors and into the driving, chaotic downpour. The freezing wind whipped through the concrete skeleton of the district, tasting of exhaust and rain. Sophia pressed forward, her heels skidding dangerously against the slick pavement. Reaching her rental SUV, she yanked the door open and buckled Leo into his car seat, her hands shaking so violently she could barely align the plastic clips. "Mommy, you're crying," Leo said softly. He reached out a small, chubby hand, his tiny fingers brushing against the hot tears streaming down her cheek. His wide gray eyes were swimming with an innocent, heartbreaking concern. "Was that man a monster from the big castle?" A fresh wave of fierce, agonizing love crashed through Sophia’s chest, drowning out the residual terror. She caught his small hand, kissing the palm with overwhelming tenderness. She had worked herself to the bone in a foreign city just to ensure he would never feel the toxic shadow of the Kingston bloodline. "No, my sweet prince," Sophia forced her voice to soften, smoothing a damp curl away from his forehead. She offered him a bright, fierce smile. "He wasn't a monster. Just a very stressful client. Remember our big promise? We are still going to that massive toy shop downtown right after this. The one with the giant red rocket ship." "The one I can sit inside?" Leo’s face lit up instantly, the brief shadow of fear vanishing. "The very one," Sophia laughed, though the sound was thick with unshed tears. "You can pick out whatever you want, my love." She closed the car door, isolating him from the storm, and threw herself into the driver’s seat. Her knuckles were white as she gripped the steering wheel, turned the key, and tore out of the parking lot, the tires spraying massive sheets of water against the gray concrete. An hour later, the hotel suite was quiet. Sophia had left Leo safely under the watchful eye of Sarah, her absolute closest friend, who was currently in the adjoining room treating the boy to a plate of room-service pancakes. Sophia paced the length of the plush carpet, her eyes locking onto her phone as it suddenly detonated against the glass table. It was an unlisted, high-priority corporate number. She swiped the screen, her voice turning into a weapon of pure, unyielding steel. "Sophia Hart." "Ms. Hart," a smooth, intimidating voice resonated through the speaker. It was Alexander’s lead executive assistant. "Mr. Kingston has personally recovered your architectural portfolio from the lobby floor. He is currently remaining in the executive boardroom on the fourth floor." Sophia’s jaw tightened. "Tell Mr. Kingston he can keep the blueprints. Consider Hart & Associates officially withdrawn from the redevelopment bid." "I’m afraid that isn't an option," the assistant replied, his voice dripping with standard Kingston ruthlessness. "Mr. Kingston has explicitly stated that if you do not return to the boardroom within the next thirty minutes to finalize the contract details privately, he will exercise his authority to launch a full forensic and legal audit of your international firm's credentials. He will investigate every account, every visa, and every birth record tied to your name in London." The underlying message was deafeningly clear: Come back and face me, or I will use my billions to dismantle your life and drag your secrets into a courtroom. Sophia felt a wave of cold fury burn away the last remnants of her fear. He was forcing her hand, using his immense wealth to trap her, just like his family always did. But she wasn't that vulnerable twenty-three-year-old girl who had fled in a crumpled wedding gown anymore. "Tell Mr. Kingston to clear the room," Sophia said, her voice dropping into a low, terrifyingly calm register. "I will be up in twenty minutes. And tell him to have his pen ready, because we are going to negotiate on my terms alone."
