Tom was delayed Wednesday by a job which went much longer than anticipated, so he picked up lo mein on the way home. He still got back before his houseguest, but Alex had been visiting apartments after work. Halfway through his meal, he heard the door open and Alex walking in, talking on his phone. “You couldn’t pay me to live in your building. You know why. I don’t care if you’ve never seen one inside your apartment, if they’re in the trash room, they’re in the entire building. No, not every building in the city has rats.” Tom had never seen a rat in his apartment, though he couldn’t swear it was entirely rodent-free.
