"Wait, so you were trying to recruit some of the police officers down at the station?" I asked Grey, confusion racing through me.
"Yeah. Apparently, after we called to set things up, there was a small house fire downtown. They needed almost all their officers on scene," Grey explained.
I let out a long breath. "Well, I'm just glad you guys got there in time."
Grey nodded. "I still can't believe that your ex would send those guys after you like that."
I cringed at the cover story. Luke had made it up, telling me it probably wouldn't be wise to put it out there that I was CIA. We both knew Pietro could have other followers trying to hunt me down.
"He was never good at taking rejection well," I mumbled. "I should have realized that it was a bad idea to get involved with him."
Grey took my explanation without a single question. "Well, I'm glad both you and Luke are okay. I'm heading over to Sarah's cafe if either of you want to join me later."
I nodded and watched as he left.
"How's your side?"
I turned and smiled as Luke approached me, having explained why those men had been after me and that anything they said should be taking with a grain of salt. "It's fine. Thanks for saving me."
Luke laughed, pressing a light kiss against my lips. "You don't have to thank me. There was never a questions as to whether or not I would. I'd do it all over again if I had to." Then he frowned. "Though it's not the best strategy, seeing as you could have gotten hypothermia or bled out into the water."
I wrapped my arms around his wait. "The only thing that matters is that we're both safe."
He nodded and placed his chin on top of my head. "Safe and together."
I smiled. Safe and together. I liked how that sounded. It made my heart flutter with the possibilities.
