Ghosts in the Fog

The warehouse was a cathedral of silence. The only sounds were the distant lap of waves somewhere beyond the docks, the occasional groan of the steel beams as the night air cooled, and the low scratch of Kweku’s pen across the map. Amara paced the length of the loft, boots whispering over the dusty floorboards. The red lines they’d been drawing all night had become a web, routes crisscrossing like arteries, names scrawled in block letters along the margins. Every path led to danger; some just got there faster. Her stomach clenched when she saw the name circled twice in the corner: KOJO. “You trust him?” she asked. Kweku didn’t look up from the map. “With my life.” “That’s not the same as trusting him with mine.” A faint smile tugged at his mouth, though it didn’t reach his eyes. “You’ll see.” Before she could press further, the burner phone buzzed on the table. One sharp vibration, then silence. Kweku checked the number, then answered with a single word. “Talk.” The voice that came through was smooth, unhurried. “Your east exit’s compromised. Two men in a white HiAce just parked on the service road. Windows tinted. They’re not there for cargo.” Amara’s pulse spiked. “Who is that?” she mouthed. Kweku covered the phone and said, “Kojo.” Then, back into the receiver: “How close?” “Too close for a stroll. They’ve got something in the back. Big. Could be for surveillance. Could be for cleanup. Either way, you’ve got… maybe five minutes before they send eyes around the block.” Kweku’s gaze flicked to Amara. “We move now.” They stuffed the map and notes into his duffel. Amara grabbed her jacket, keeping her ears tuned to the background of Kojo’s voice.....faint static, the hum of an idling engine, and something like waves slapping against wood. “Which way?” Kweku asked. “West,” Kojo replied. “There’s an alley behind the container yard. You’ll hit the fog line in three minutes. I’ll guide you from there.” They slipped down the metal staircase, the air growing cooler the lower they went. Outside, the night had shifted.....the ocean fog was creeping inland, rolling between the warehouses in thick, slow coils. Kweku kept low, scanning every shadow. “Stay close.” The container yard loomed ahead, rows of metal giants stacked in uneven towers. The fog clung to their sides, turning the space into a maze of grey walls and blind corners. Kojo’s voice in Kweku’s ear came again. “Two lefts, then a right. Don’t stop.” They obeyed, feet silent on the damp concrete. Halfway down the second lane, Amara froze. A silhouette moved at the far end...tall, broad-shouldered, the faint gleam of something metallic in his hand. Kweku saw it too. He steered her behind a container, pressing her back to the cold steel. “Go quiet,” he murmured. The figure’s footsteps echoed closer. The metallic object caught the fog-diffused light....a short, serrated blade. Kweku’s hand drifted toward the pistol under his jacket… but then, just as the figure reached their corner.... “Don’t shoot, you i***t,” the man whispered, voice dripping with amusement. “It’s me.” Kojo stepped into view, blade flipping easily in his hand. His dark windbreaker was soaked at the shoulders, his eyes sharp and assessing as they flicked between Amara and Kweku. “You didn’t say you were here,” Kweku said flatly. “You didn’t ask.” Kojo’s grin was quick and without apology. “Now move.....that HiAce isn’t the only problem out here.” They followed him deeper into the fog. Kojo moved like he’d been born in it, his steps sure, his senses tuned to every shift in the night. “What else is here?” Amara asked. Kojo glanced back at her, eyes gleaming. “The kind of men who don’t knock before they come in. And if TALON’s sending them in twos, they’re either underestimating you… or setting you up.” Kweku shot him a look. “You’re enjoying this too much.” “Someone has to.” They wound through another row, then slipped through a gap in the chain-link fence. On the other side was the dock, the black Atlantic stretching into nothing. A small fishing skiff bobbed against the pier. Kojo gestured toward it. “Your ride.” Amara’s brows lifted. “That thing?” “Fast enough to get you past the checkpoints. Slow enough not to raise alarms.” They were halfway down the pier when headlights flared in the fog behind them. The low growl of an engine followed, tires crunching over gravel. Kojo swore under his breath. “They found the west exit.” Kweku turned to Amara. “Get on the boat.” She hesitated. “What about.....” “Now!” She sprinted the last stretch, jumping down into the skiff. The wooden hull rocked under her weight. Kojo untied the rope in one swift motion, but Kweku was still on the pier, his pistol drawn. The engine sound grew louder, closer. A shadow stepped out of the mist....not one man, but three. All armed. Kweku fired once. One of the men dropped, his gun clattering to the ground. The other two ducked behind a crate, returning fire in short, sharp bursts. Wood splintered on the pier. Amara ducked instinctively, heart hammering. “Kweku!” Kojo yanked her toward the outboard motor. “You want him alive? Start this thing.” She fumbled with the choke, the engine sputtering to life just as Kweku sprinted the last few steps and leapt into the skiff. Bullets hit the water in quick, snapping impacts as Kojo pushed them off from the pier. The fog swallowed them whole within seconds. No one spoke until the shore was a faint smudge behind them. Kweku sat opposite Amara, his breathing heavy but controlled. Kojo kept his hands on the tiller, eyes scanning the grey expanse ahead. Finally, Amara broke the silence. “You could’ve told us you were out here.” Kojo’s grin was faint. “And miss your reaction? Not a chance.” Kweku shook his head. “You haven’t changed.” “No,” Kojo said, gaze fixed forward. “And neither has TALON. Which means we’re all running out of time.” The skiff pushed on, the water dark and endless beneath them. Somewhere in the fog, a distant horn sounded.....low, mournful, and far too close. Kojo’s grin faded. “We’ve got company.”
