Axel smiled. “My name is Axel Wilderwolf,” he said, expecting the name to mean something to her.
“Does that mean he is the son of the Alpha, Gideon Wilderwolf? That would make him the son of the richest man in New York, but who cares? He is definitely just like Ryker,” she thought to herself, wiping away her tears.
Axel was astounded by her silence; he observed that she wasn't bothered by the name.
Humans were always glad to meet werewolves; the harmony that existed between werewolves and humans had been in existence for close to two hundred years. Axel wondered why she wasn't glad to meet him and why she didn't react like someone who knew his name.
“I apologize for what that man did to you; it wasn't proper for him to intimidate you in such a manner; werewolves shouldn't take advantage of their ability against humans.” Axel was bound to find out if she knew about the existence of werewolves in New York; she seemed old enough to know.
“It's fine; I too apologize for what happened the other time; it wasn't my intention.” She said that and suddenly looked down.
She then turned to the taxi driver and said, “I had no money, and I knew I had no money, but I really wanted to see Ryker; that's why I entered your taxi, but now I regret it all. It wasn't even worth it,” she said, and tears began flowing from her eyes.
She quickly wiped her tears and looked away. “I'm just sorry,” she said softly, and she began moving away.
Axel felt compassion for the girl; he was curious to know what was bothering her. Earlier in the morning, she was energetic and happy, but at that moment, she was looking pale and sad. Perhaps that was why she wasn't excited about meeting a werewolf.
“I want to drop you off at your destination,” Axel requested.
Odessa waved her head to and fro in disagreement before turning to him. She knew it was a bad idea; she didn't want him to find out she was a werewolf, and taking a lift from him could expose that.
Not that she had any reason to hide her identity, but it suddenly felt like the right thing to do at that moment.
“Thank you, but I will be fine.”
No lady had ever said no to him before; he was the kind of gentleman who easily got any lady he wanted. Her declination was surprising. A lady not overwhelmed by his presence amazed him.
As soon as Odessa walked out, Axel walked to the taxi driver. He dug his hands into his pocket and took out some cash. He handed it over to the taxi driver.
“This should be enough.”
The taxi driver smiled as he collected the cash. “This is more than enough; thank you,” he said with gratitude.
Axel ignored him and walked back to his Mercedes-Benz. He entered it and drove off in a direction that was opposite the route Odessa was taking.
Odessa walked back home crying. Her heart was heavy with sorrow; she couldn't control the pain that crept from within. Tears flowed from her eyes down her cheeks as she trekked back home.
As she trekked, the memories of what she saw in Ryker's room flashed in; it was like it was happening all over again before her. She was heartbroken.
She thought she was going to have the perfect love story: a boy and a girl madly in love with each other with no third party, willing to die for each other. But Ryker was the Alpha's son, and a lot of ladies would want him as well.
She got home and saw her mother and brother in the sitting room; they were unboxing the items they got from the market.
Her mother spotted her immediately and called her out.
"Come, sweetheart, come see the gown I chose for you,” her mother said, lifting a pink ball gown.
Odessa walked to her mom. She tried her best to hide her sorrows, but they were written all over her.
"Oh, dear, why do you look pale?” Her mother asked and dropped the ball gown aside.
Odessa looked around in the sitting room and saw all the nice items her mother bought: the silver heels, the ball gown, the flowers, and the navy blue suit Samson was holding in his hands.
Tears rushed down her eyes, and her mother hurriedly hugged her.
“What is it? Sweetheart,” the mother asked.
She was curious to know what was behind her tears.
“I don't want to be his mate,” Odessa said, her voice barely audible.
This astonished her mother and brother. They both knew about her enthusiasm for Ryker; it was obvious that she liked him even though she never expressly said so.
“Father will not take this news likely; this was his chance to be the Alpha's Beta; I don't think he will let you ruin things for him,” Samson disclosed.
Odessa couldn't believe her brother's concern; she was devastated that he wasn't even bothered by the way she felt. She knew he was right about their father, but she still expected compassion from him.
She hurriedly ran to her room and locked it from inside.
“Pack these things,” the mother ordered Samson.
She quickly stood and walked to Odessa's room. She knocked on her door, but Odessa refused to respond. Her mother could hear her heartbeat; it was beating faster as she cried.
"Odessa, please open your door.” Her voice was firm.
Odessa remained silent for a while; only her sobbing was heard.
“Odessa,” the mother called out again.
The mother heard Odessa's footsteps approaching. Odessa opened the door, and she walked in.
She saw the pain in her eyes; it was overwhelming for a mother to see in her child. She hugged her passionately.
“Darling, what is wrong?”
The two of them walked to Odessa's bed and sat down. The mother leaned closer to her.
“What happened?” The mother asked.
“I saw him with another girl; they were intimate.” She couldn't even mention who the other girl was.
“Dear child,” the mother said, and she hugged her passionately again.
“Does he know?” The mother asked.
Odessa waved her head to and fro.
“You have to suck it all up and pretend not to know; look at the brighter side of it; he will one day be Alpha and you the Luna of the King's Pack,” the mother advised.
Odessa's eyes narrowed in disbelief. “Mother!!”
