The Golden Benefactor

Chapter Seven: The Golden Benefactor The late-afternoon sun was sinking behind the canopy of the Ocala woods when Rosie Miller arrived at the hospital for her shift. She expected the usual scene: patients waiting in the lobby, overworked nurses moving between floors, and the reception desk buried beneath charts. Instead, the hospital was unusually chaotic. Administrators hurried across the lobby while nurses gathered in small groups, whispering excitedly. Rosie frowned. “Did I miss an emergency?” Emily turned toward her, eyes wide. “You missed something much bigger than an emergency.” “What happened?” “The Blackwood Group just saved the hospital.” Rosie raised an eyebrow. “Saved it?” Emily leaned closer. “The board was apparently preparing for bankruptcy. Then the Blackwood Group stepped in with a massive private donation. They're funding a new neonatal wing, upgrading the maternity department, and replacing some of our outdated equipment.” Rosie stared at her. “How much?” “Millions.” “Millions?” Emily nodded eagerly. “And the CEO himself is coming today with his executive team to meet the board and inspect the hospital.” Rosie glanced around the lobby. She had only worked at Ocala Community Hospital for a few days, but even she had noticed how badly the hospital needed better equipment. “Well, billionaire or not, the patients still need their nurses,” she said, picking up a clipboard. “I'm going upstairs.” Emily laughed. “Go ahead. But don't blame me when you regret missing all the excitement.” Rosie shook her head and headed upstairs. For the next twenty minutes, she focused on her work. She checked patients' vitals, updated charts, administered medications, and made sure the mothers in the maternity ward were comfortable. Then she heard voices rising from downstairs. Whispers. Footsteps. Excited chatter. Rosie finished her chart and headed back downstairs. The moment she reached the lobby, the glass doors opened. A group of sharply dressed executives entered alongside the hospital administrators. Rosie barely paid attention to them until her eyes landed on a familiar face. Maria. The same woman she had accidentally bumped into at the wholesale center. Rosie blinked. What were the chances? Her gaze moved to the men walking beside her. She didn't recognize either of them. One was tall and imposing, with an expression that suggested he rarely smiled. The other carried himself with quieter confidence, but there was something equally intimidating about him. There was an unusual presence about all three men and women entering the hospital. They seemed different from the ordinary people around them, almost as though they carried an invisible weight that made the busy lobby feel strangely smaller. Then Rosie saw the man walking at the center of the group. Her breath caught. It was him. The strange man from the maternity floor. Only this time, he looked completely different. He wore a perfectly tailored charcoal three-piece suit, his broad shoulders filling it effortlessly. His dark hair was neatly brushed back, and his expression was calm and controlled. Rosie stared. He's the billionaire donor? As though he felt her gaze, Adrian stopped. His eyes swept across the lobby. Then they found her. For a moment, everything else seemed to fade into the background. Silver stirred beneath his control, restless at her nearness. Adrian forced the reaction down. His gaze remained on Rosie for only a few seconds before he turned his attention back to the hospital administrators. But Theo and Derrick had already noticed where he had been looking. Their eyes settled on the young woman standing near the stairs. Neither had seen her before. They studied her quietly. Rosie didn't look frightened by the attention surrounding her. She simply stood there with her clipboard in hand, observing the group with cautious curiosity. Theo glanced at Derrick. Derrick gave a small nod. Theo nodded back. There was no need for words. They both understood. She was different. She carried herself with the kind of quiet confidence they would expect from the woman destined to stand beside their Alpha. Their future Luna. Adrian noticed the exchange but said nothing. Inside, Silver remained restless. She came down to see us. She came to work, Adrian replied silently. Still came to us. Adrian ignored him. He remembered his plan. He couldn't rush her. She knew nothing about his world, the bond between them, or even what he truly was. So he would approach carefully. The hospital administrator stepped forward. “Mr. Blackwood, welcome. We're honored to have you here.” Adrian gave him a polite nod. “Thank you.” His gaze briefly returned to Rosie before he continued. “The maternity and family health departments are our primary focus. I want to ensure the staff have everything they need to provide proper care.” The administrator smiled eagerly. “Absolutely. Let me introduce you to our nursing team.” He gestured toward the nurses gathered nearby. The group began walking toward them. Rosie remained where she was. Her fingers tightened slightly around her clipboard as Adrian approached. There was something unsettling about the way he looked at her, as though he already knew something about her that she didn't know herself. She couldn't explain it. She only knew that the arrival of Adrian Blackwood had somehow made the ordinary hospital feel like the beginning of something far bigger. And Adrian knew one thing for certain. He had entered her world. Now he had to find a way to stay in it.
