CHAPTER 4 KIRA’S POV My hands were sore and numb from excessive scrubbing which I had become accustomed to. I moved the brush back and forth across the floor, following the same pattern. I was distracted by the sound of a car driving to our compound. I stopped what I was doing to check who it was. My father was at home so I wondered who It was that was driving into our compound. I looked up and saw a sleek black vehicle parking in the compound which seemed quite alien amidst our old yard. I was patiently waiting to see who would come out of the car. The car opened, and I was afraid of who it was that stepped out of the car. It was him. I hurried up the stairs and into the house, pressing myself to the wall to know if I could eavesdrop on the conversation. I hear footsteps and the sound of the front door giving way. I also heard the voices of my parents who had just gone out to check what was happening. I was too curious to know what was going on. I peeped through the door and saw him walk in. “I want to use this opportunity to apologize for whatever my daughter did to you.” My father began. I had no idea why he couldn't just believe me. The man standing there was someone I had never spoken to in my entire life. “That's not what I'm here for,” he replied. It was the first time I had heard his voice properly. Since that wasn't the reason he was here, I wondered what it was. I decided to lean in more and listen. “I have come… to buy her.” Although I could not catch every word, my pulse began to falter. I blinked, the words sinking in gradually. ‘Buy … her.’ My head began to spin, but I couldn't erase what I had heard. He was here for me. And my father was nodding in approval. He looked pleased as if this is something one should be overjoyed about. I felt as though I was being kicked in the stomach. “Twenty thousand dollars,” he stated. I looked at my father to know what he would say but the price seemed almost appropriate for him. “Do we have a deal?” I heard my father say. “Yes,” he didn’t falter nor did he hesitate. And just like that, he said yes. My father was handing me over because of money. “What are you doing?” I almost lost my stance. Clara was behind me staring at me like I was doing something bad. I tried to catch my breath. I didn't give her any response. I tried to ignore her and walk away. “Were you eavesdropping?” She asked me. “Clara, please just let me be.” I pleaded with her and attempted to walk away. “Since you were so eager to hear them, why don't you go in?” She said, pushing me in before I could react. I caught sight of him first and I recognised him. My heart beat faster, my wolf wild and unrestrained like it had been searching for this moment. I also felt a bond between us; that was when I realized that I didn't just recognize him as someone I had seen before, but I recognized him as my mate. Since I was his mate, what was the need to buy me? I could no longer stand there and be stoic. “Kira, this is your new owner,” my Dad gestured to the man seated opposite him. The man who purchased me, or rather, the one who owned me, turns and locks his eyes with me. For the briefest of moments, I sense something. I did not like it, but there was something in me, a piece of me that I didn't know existed until now, that seemed to associate with him. That feeling, that instinct knows him. It was scary and exquisite at the same time and I was confused. He rushed from where he was seated. He looked like he was about to leave. My dad stood up after him and made his way towards me. “You're going with him,” he said close to my ear. I looked at my father in surprise. I was to go with him now. I wasn't even ready. “Now?” I asked him. “Yes, now. Don't do anything stupid this time. Don't make us lose this opportunity.” My father warned me. “I don't even have anything with me,” I tried to make excuses for my father. “Having anything isn't necessary,” he finally said to me, walking out of our house. He didn't say he was talking to me but I knew he was. “Go with him,” my dad said, pushing me to follow him. I glanced at my house one last time. I looked at my father again and all I could see in his eyes was the joy of having that amount of money with him. What confused me was why Keith had to buy me when I was his mate. Was there a possibility he had no idea that I was his mate? “Mate?” I murmured. It felt like claiming something that was certainly there. He halted, turning around slowly to direct his gaze at me. He stood there, looking like he was investigating me with his dark eyes. He let out a laugh, or rather a harsh, mirthless sound. “Don’t get your hopes high, I will never regard you as my mate,” he spat, words slicing through me like a cut. “You will be a slave for as long as you are with me. My slave.” My entire universe seemed to fracture into fragments, his voice continuously ringing in my ear. I closed my mouth tightly as I did not want him to see me shed tears. He knew I was his mate all along but he never wanted to acknowledge me as one. All he wanted was someone to call his slave.
