CHAPTER 2 KIRA’S POV “Alonso, you betrayed me?” I asked with trembling, certain that this was a dream. I couldn't believe my eyes, he did not only bring my dad, he brought step mother and step sister. “Don't take it personally. The pay was good and I couldn't bring myself to decline it.” “How could you? After all these years? I loved you.” I couldn't control the tears from falling from my eyes. I couldn't care less if my family was there. What hit me the most was the fact that someone I trusted almost all my life could betray me so easily. “I know but I never felt the same way. It has always been your sister.” I looked at Clara and she was smiling wildly. It was obvious she knew about it already. So I was being played all along. “Thank you, Alonso.” My father said, moving closer to me. “Let's go,” he said, pulling me away. I couldn't even struggle to break free. Everything little hope I had left in me had been shattered. I thought Alonso would be my mate but he always had eyes for my sister. I had been a fool all these years. I couldn't bring myself to look back at him. If he wasn't my mate, then who was? The question began to go through my head. Hannah and Clara went back home while my dad took me to the supposed place. I wondered why they came along if they weren't going along with us. All they wanted was to just rub it in my face that I lost yet another person who was important to me. We arrived at a grand estate that was surrounded by luxurious aesthetics. It was big enough to hold the whole pack. A man came out of the house and walked towards us. He didn't seem like the Alpha. He didn't have that authority an Alpha should possess. “Mr Keith is expecting you,” he said, gesturing for us to go in. Mr Keith? I wondered why the name sounded familiar. I didn't put much thought into it because there were a lot of people who were named Keith. We were ushered into the grand hall which was lined with different portraits and some forms of art. We stopped at the living room which was also very grand but it was the man before me that caught my attention. He radiated authority and power. He was bound to be the alpha. But something about him felt familiar as I tried to look at his face. My father put me in place before I could move. “I've brought my daughter like I said I would.” My father said to him. I felt really ashamed to have someone like him as a father. No father would treat their child, especially not for money. He began to move slightly until he finally turned to meet our faces. I knew him. I knew him from school. He was the silent, untouchable Alpha whom every girl wanted but couldn’t get his attention. I gazed at him and I found him assessing me. And then, the look of recognition showed in his eyes. Soon his facial expression turned to that of anger and he looked like he was going to strangle her to death. “I can't believe this,” he muttered under his breath. “Her?” My dad who had been standing me, shifted uncomfortably, his face getting harder as we both watched the Alpha walk away. I felt a huge sense of relief. Whatever my father had in mind didn't go as planned for some reason but I was still happy. I knew my father was not happy. “What did you do?” He asked, gripping my hands forcefully. “What did you say to him?” “N…nothing,” I said, trying to release the grip. “I didn't say anything to him.” “Lies,” he pressed harder on my scar. “Why else would he leave in such a way? You could see that he was angry.” “How is that my fault?” I asked him. Keith and I had never talked so I had no idea why he would leave in rage. “You've embarrassed me in the eyes of the Alpha.” “I don't even know him.” I tried to make it seem clearer to him but as usual, he always turned a deaf ear. Before I could defend myself, he jerked me and pulled me out of the mansion. The humiliation must have hit him badly, being dismissed by the Alpha. I honestly didn't care but I guess it mattered to him. When we got home, my stepmother was waiting in the doorway, arms crossed. She noticed the grip my father had on me from afar. “So?” she began. “What did she do this time?” “She humiliated us,” he said, his voice filled with anger. “We were before the Alpha. One look at her and he became angry and walked away from us without saying a word.” My stepmother's eyes faced me. “You stupid, useless girl. Do you have any idea what you've cost us?” “B-but I didn't do anything,” I tried to explain. “You had one chance,” her stepmother sneered. “One chance to make us proud once in your life. But, of course, you couldn't do it right.” Clara made a clicking sound with her tongue. “Father? Mother? It’s high time we get rid of her. She doesn’t belong to this family, I mean she always tries to do things to jeopardize our chances of making money.” “You're right my daughter. She is just so useless, maybe the Alpha Prince noticed that and that was the reason he left,” Father added. I stood there, one against three. Why did mother have to leave me to such a fate? My chest tightened as more insults came out of my father's mouth. Hearing it from my stepmother and stepsister was one thing but from the mouth of the man whose seed I was created from? The feeling was worse.
