The remaining soldier at the door twirled Aiden’s sword and smirked. Aiden dropped his head. They had failed. He had failed. He could barely move—he could not even bring a rune to mind without it burning the back of his eyes. The Eagle Riders were gone, defeated, and Erin, Serineth, the i***t girl, had handed herself straight to the enemy. Aiden screwed up his eyes. If only he had known, he could have stopped her. If only she had trusted him.
A tiny thud broke the silence. Aiden opened his eyes and saw the guard slumped on the floor. A figure stepped over—a figure with a brown coat, sandy hair, and cunning grey eyes.
