Episode 6 – The First Soul

1140 Words
The sky above The Fringe fractured like glass under pressure, threads of dark and light crisscrossing like veins. Time slowed, the air so heavy it felt like breathing through ash. Black stood at one end of the street, every muscle tense. Across from him stood Lucas Vane, the rogue reaper whose very presence distorted the realm. Between them, Hannah, Jamie, and Eva Whitmore stood motionless, caught between two versions of death. “Take them back,” Black said, his voice echoing unnaturally through The Fringe. “This isn’t their place.” Lucas Vane tilted his head, expression calm. “But it could be. What better place for people like them—souls betrayed by the system, cast out before their time?” Black stepped forward. “They’re not yours to keep.” Lucas smiled. “Neither were the first. But I kept her anyway. Would you like to meet her?” Before Black could respond, Lucas raised his hand, and the fog parted behind him. A figure appeared—feminine, graceful, ageless. She was dressed in white, eyes wide with a sorrow that shimmered like light on water. “Her name was Clara Monroe,” Lucas said. “She died at 19. A victim of a random accident—a misfire in a system that didn’t even register her life. No record. No name in the Death Ledger. She was never meant to die.” Black stared at the woman. His hand lowered slightly. “I saved her,” Lucas continued. “I brought her here. And she became the first. The first soul I protected. The one that showed me this world doesn’t need more reapers… it needs reformers.” Jamie whispered to Hannah, “She’s not just alive. She’s aware. She knows what’s happening.” Clara slowly turned to them and offered a nod. “We aren’t ghosts,” she said softly. “We’re survivors.” But as powerful as Lucas’s vision sounded, The Fringe trembled again. A warning. Black stepped closer. “You’ve built your world on imbalance. The natural order of life and death can’t sustain a fracture like this. The longer these souls stay here, the more unstable this realm becomes.” “I’m buying them time,” Lucas replied. “No,” Black said coldly. “You’re delaying judgment.” Lucas narrowed his eyes. “Better than handing them over to a cruel, silent void.” Black’s coat flared in a wind that didn’t exist. “Then let’s test the weight of your mercy.” The moment shattered. The two collided in a flash of energy. Lightning crackled through the air, the ground fracturing beneath their feet. Souls scattered, fading into the fog to avoid the conflict. Clara grabbed Jamie’s hand. “We have to leave—now!” “But where do we go?” he asked. “Follow me,” she said. “There’s a gate back. But only those with heartbeats can pass freely.” Hannah grabbed Eva’s arm. “We’ll keep them covered. Go!” The four of them ran, ducking through the cracked corridors of The Fringe, pursued by the chaos of collapsing realities. Behind them, Black and Lucas fought across rooftops and roads, two dark stars colliding in a sky that rippled like water. In the physical world, back in St. Dunstan’s Church, the circle glowed. Sparks erupted from the stones. The gate was destabilizing. Inside the safe house, equipment began to fail. Monitors blinked erratically. One screen displayed a reading: Time Remaining: 03:11 If the gate wasn't closed in three minutes, the souls might remain trapped forever—or worse, The Fringe would tear open into London itself. In The Fringe, Clara led them into a shattered tower, the walls painted with names of souls she had helped. “This is the passage point,” she said. “But only Jamie and Eva can go through on their own. Hannah—your soul is marked. You can’t return unless tethered.” Jamie turned to her. “Then I’ll go back and re-anchor you.” “No,” Hannah said. “Go now. You’re still alive. And if you stay, your window closes.” Clara placed a hand on Jamie’s chest. “You still have something to do in the world. You still have a choice.” Jamie turned to Hannah one last time. “I’ll come back for you. I swear.” Then, with Eva beside him, they stepped into the gate—and vanished. Outside the collapsing realm, Jamie and Eva landed hard on the cold floor of the church, gasping for breath. A white light wrapped around them and then faded. A breath later, the gate cracked. And The Fringe trembled. Inside The Fringe, Hannah’s body flickered. Time was running out. But Black had returned. Bloody, limping, victorious—but only barely. Lucas had vanished, retreating deeper into the realm. “You came back,” Hannah said. “I said I would.” “But now… the gate—” “I’ll get you out,” he said. “Even if it kills me.” He placed his hand on her chest and began the soul-binding process, reciting ancient words, his own essence wrapping around hers like a shield. The gate split open one last time. And together—they jumped. The impact nearly shattered them both, but Black and Hannah emerged from the gate in the real world. She collapsed into his arms, barely breathing. He steadied her. Then the gate imploded, sending a shockwave through the church that shattered windows and knocked the altar over. The portal to The Fringe was closed. For now. Later, at the safe house, Hannah lay on the couch under a thick blanket. Jamie sat beside her, Eva across the room nursing tea. No one spoke for a long while. Then Hannah asked, “Did he escape?” Black nodded. “Lucas is still in The Fringe. But not for long.” Jamie looked up. “You’re going back in?” Black answered carefully, “Eventually. But not yet.” “What happens now?” Eva asked. “If the gate is sealed?” Black looked at her. “The rogue’s influence will fade—for a while. But the souls he saved… they remember. And they’ll spread what they saw.” Jamie whispered, “A world where we choose our own fate.” Black stared out the window. “That world isn’t ready. But maybe… maybe it should be.” That night, Hannah woke from a dream—a dream of Clara Monroe standing at a lake in The Fringe, staring into her reflection. “You saw him,” Clara said in the vision. “But you haven’t seen yourself yet.” Then she smiled faintly. “When you do… everything changes.” End of Episode 6
