The Aftermath

Harper POV The following days were a blur of whispered conversations and stolen glances at the office. Neither of us knew how to navigate this new reality, but one thing was clear: nothing would ever be the same. At work, Nicholas was more protective than ever, constantly checking on me and subtly easing my workload without making it obvious. But when we were alone, the tension between us grew thicker, the unspoken questions hanging in the air like a storm waiting to break. “Are you scared?” he asked one evening, his voice uncharacteristically soft as we sat in my living room, papers from the Sutton deal spread between us. “Terrified,” I admitted, my hand resting instinctively on my stomach. “Me too,” he said, surprising me. “We’ll figure it out,” he said again. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- The next day Harper’s POV The text came out of nowhere. Nicholas: I need you to clear your evening tomorrow. Be ready at 7:00. Dress formally. I stared at my phone, frowning. Typical Nicholas—no explanation, just a command. For a second, I considered ignoring him, but curiosity got the better of me. Me: Why? His reply came almost immediately. Nicholas: Just trust me. The next evening, a sleek black car pulled up outside my apartment promptly at 7:00. Nicholas wasn’t in the car, but his driver handed me a card when I slid inside. Harper, you deserve an evening that’s as extraordinary as you are. I’ll see you soon. – Nicholas. I rolled my eyes, but a smile tugged at my lips despite myself. Nicholas had a way of being infuriating and thoughtful at the same time, and I was starting to think it might be one of his superpowers. When the car stopped in front of one of the most exclusive restaurants in the city, I was both impressed and slightly overwhelmed. The place was legendary—not just for its food, but for its atmosphere. It wasn’t just a restaurant; it was an experience. The maître d’ greeted me with a warm smile and escorted me to a private terrace overlooking the city skyline. Candlelight flickered on the table set for two, and soft music played in the background. My breath caught. And then I saw him. Nicholas stood at the edge of the terrace, his back to me as he gazed out at the lights of the city. He turned when he heard me, and for a moment, the air seemed to shift. He wasn’t just my boss or the father of the child I was carrying. He was Nicholas—the man who’d managed to burrow his way into my heart despite every wall I’d tried to build. “You look stunning,” he said, his voice low as his eyes swept over me. I glanced down at the emerald green dress I’d chosen, feeling suddenly self-conscious. “This is… a lot,” I said, gesturing to the setup. “You deserve a lot,” he replied simply, pulling out my chair for me. Nicholas’s POV I’d spent 2 days planning this night. Every detail, every moment—it all had to be perfect. Harper deserved nothing less. As we ate, she laughed at my stories, her eyes sparkling in the candlelight. She was more beautiful than I’d ever seen her, I found myself wondering how I’d gotten so lucky. When dessert was served—a delicate chocolate soufflé—I knew it was time. My heart was pounding, an unfamiliar nervousness settling over me. “Harper,” I said, setting my fork down and reaching for her hand. She looked up, her expression softening. “What’s wrong?” “Nothing,” I said, my voice steady despite the storm raging inside me. “Everything is exactly right.” I stood, pulling her gently to her feet. Her brows furrowed in confusion, but she followed my lead as I guided her to the center of the terrace. “Harper,” I began, my voice uncharacteristically hesitant. “I’ve spent my life building walls. Walls to protect myself, to keep people out, to make sure I never let anyone get close enough to hurt me.” Her eyes widened, her hand tightening in mine. “And then you came along,” I continued, my voice softening. “You were chaos and fire, and you turned my world upside down. And I fought it. I fought you. But somewhere along the way, I realized something.” I reached into my pocket, pulling out a small velvet box and sinking to one knee. Her hand flew to her mouth, her eyes filling with tears. “I realized that my life means nothing without you in it. You’ve changed me, Harper. You’ve made me better. And now, I want to spend the rest of my life proving to you that you made the right choice by staying.” I opened the box, revealing a stunning diamond ring that caught the candlelight and sparkled like the stars above. “Harper, will you marry me?” Harper’s POV For a moment, I couldn’t speak. Tears blurred my vision, and my heart felt like it was going to burst out of my chest. “Yes,” I whispered, my voice trembling. “Yes, Nicholas, I’ll marry you.” The relief and joy on his face were enough to make my knees weak. He slipped the ring onto my finger, standing and pulling me into his arms. His lips found mine, and the kiss was soft, full of promises and hope. When we finally pulled apart, I looked up at him, my tears mixing with laughter. “You really went all out, didn’t you?” He smirked, brushing a strand of hair from my face. “Nothing but the best for you, Harper.”
