THE TIPSY PIRATE WAS a favorite hangout among both locals and tourists. Visitors to the area loved to have their picture taken with the wooden statue of Coconut Carl, a pirate who’d plied the local waters and had been known for his love of plunder and women, but most of all for his love of rum. Legend had it that he’d once donned a dress and put a coconut underneath in an attempt to disguise himself as a pregnant woman and evade capture. However, he was more than a little tipsy at the time and forgot to shave off his mustache and beard, which made his story a little less believable.
