I awoke to the sounds of chirping. I look around and realize it's not my room. These are not my sheets that I'm hugging to my body. I relaxed as I remembered the events that brought us here. At first glance around and actually getting my first real look of my new room, it was small. it had its own bathroom and closet, there was a window and a dresser that sat on the opposite wall from where I was in bed. I was to exhausted to actually look at it before passing out onto the bed last night. I got up and walked over to the window. It has a beautiful view of the woods that surrounded us. I walk into the connecting bathroom and wash my face and brush my hair. I looked at my reflection for awhile. My blue eyes had a hint of grey in them from the lack of sleep and my usually shiny brown hair was a dull greasy brown from not being properly washed in a while but other than that, I looked like myself. The usual wavy brown hair that barely brushed the top of my shoulders, the same face, and skinny build. I walked back to the bed and glanced at the bedside table. The clock read 12:30. I had slept a good eight hours.
My stomach grumbled as I smelt bacon cooking. I followed my nose to the kitchen where some man was cooking breakfast. He must have sensed my presence since he passed me a steaming cup of coffee. Surprised, I walked over to the refrigerator and took out the creamer. I poured my desired amount and took a sip. "Mmm, thanks. I needed this." I said to him. He smiled and looked at me, "You're welcome. Your mom will be back later. But for now, the bacons done and there's pancakes on the table behind you. Help yourself." I looked up at him and was shocked to find the man who attacked me just a couple hours ago now making breakfast for me. I dutifully looked behind me and sure enough there was an enormous plate full of pancakes. The table was already set so I helped myself to a couple pancakes and bacon. He sat down with me while I ate. "Aren't you going to eat," I asked him. He smirked and barred his teeth. "Vampire. I don't eat normal human food." Oh, right. I had forgotten that he was different. I looked closely and saw that his eyes had changed to a pretty shade of blue. "How did your eyes change," I wanted to know. Of course he was a vampire, but how do you actually do something like that?
He looked at for a moment, probably trying to figure out how to word it so I'd understand. "Well, when I'm full vampire at night they change. It usually stays the blue until the sun goes down." He replied. Made enough sense to me. So I turned my attention back to my food. "I'm hungry and something smells good." Andy was awake. The vampire moved so he could fix Andrew a glass of milk to drink. He sat next to me as I finished making him a plate. "Well, good morning sunshine. How did you sleep," I asked him as I sat his plate down. "Fine. Did you know Jay is a vampire," he asked me. It took me a minute to place the name Jay. I looked over at him as he brought over the glass of milk for Andy. "Yes, Andy. I do know Jay is a vampire," turning my attention back to Jay, "what are we suppose to do here? What are we doing here in the first place?" He didn't even glance my way when he replied. "That is for your mom to tell you Jen. Not me. I can't believe she allowed it though." His answer only confused me. He must have sensed that since he looked up and said, "don't worry about it. You both shouldn't roam the grounds without someone else with you. But there is a quarry not far from here if you both wish to swim." "Yes! Please Jen, can we please swim," Andrew begged me. I laughed at him and told him that he could as long as he finished his food, which only made him shovel the last couple of bites into his mouth.
I picked up his plate as he rushes to his room to change. I feel a sudden warmth at the base of my neck. I freeze as I feel his hands on my waist. "You smell pretty today," he says into my ear. My mind says run but my body says stay. I jump at the sound of Andrew's feet returning. He pulls away as Andrew enters wearing his bathing suit. "Jen, you need to change," he tells me, annoyed that I haven't. Jay grabs it from me and pushes me away. "Go on and change. I'll be there in a minute." I give him a questioning look, since he is a vampire. He smiles and turns his attention to the rest of the dishes. I silently say thank you and walk to my room.
I quickly found my bikini and located my phone. Great, a billion texts from Amber demanding to know why I'm not home. Well, that will have to wait until I figure out where the hell I actually am. There was a soft knock on my door. It was definitely not Andy since he always uses his code knock. I quickly pull on a pair of jeans and tanktop over my my bikini. I rush to the door to see Jay standing there getting ready to knock again. He quickly lets his hand drop. "I thought you would never hurry up. Girls, seriously, take forever." He complained like a girl. I rolled my eyes at him and walked past him.
I turned back to him in time to see that he had been checking out my ass. "Seriously? You need a life," I told him. He only smirked and strutted by. 'Who did he think he was? I mean, yeah, he was cute with his floppy hair and pretty eyes. But just look how toned he was! God, Jen, shut up!' I thought to myself. I looked away so I wasn't caught starting at him and how his shirt stretched over his muscles. He grabbed a pair of sunglasses and walked towards the door. Andy and I had the same thought as he reached for the door knob. "Stop! You'll die," I practically screamed as he opened the door. The sun hit him but he didn't turn to ash. What the hell? We both stood there, shocked. "You should be dead," Andy told him. I gently smacked Andrews arm. "You can't say that," I told him. He looked at me and then to Jay. "But Jen, he should be dead or dying! He's a vampire," Andy replied. I looked at Jay and it's true. I've seen Jay's fangs. Why wasn't he dying? He looked at us and then smiled. "You really believe that crap still? Every vampire born or turned after 2024 has been able to go into the sun, thanks to some new blood transfusion. Don't you humans ever watch the news anymore," he asked. We walked in silence as I soaked in the new information.
The quarry wasn't that far from the house. It was pretty big and thankfully you could still see the bottom. "This use to be a miners house. He had mined for the granite here before others had found it else where and he couldn't make a bigger profit on it. He then died or moved away, but it was abandoned when I had found it and moved in a couple years ago." Jay informed us as I put sunscreen on Andrew. Andrew looked up at him in amazement. "Alright, you ready to swim," I ask him. He nods his head enthusiastically and jumps in. I take off my tanktop so I can apply sunscreen. "Here, let me help you with that," Jay says and he takes the bottle from me. He helps me get my back and neck. His touch lingers there when he is done. I turn to face him and say, "You're turn. Shirt off." He smirks, "Great excuse to see me strip, right?" He takes it off and turns, thankfully he didn't see me blush.
"Come on you two! Let's swim," Andrew calls from where he is swimming. I finish with Jay's back and step back so I can take my shorts off. I can feel his gaze on me as I quickly slip them off. "Seriously Jay, get a life," I say as I throw my jeans with my tanktop. He smirks and pushes me in. 'That motherfucker will pay!' I think to myself as I resurface. I turn just in time to see Jay jump gracefully in. I looked over at Andrew and swim towards him. He was trying to climb up the over side. "Hold on, Andy. I'm coming," I call out to him. "Not unless I get to him first Jen," laughed Jay. 'Oh, it was on!' I thought. He, of course, beat me to him. 'Stupid vampires.' I thought as I watched him help Andrew up. He hoisted himself up and showed Andrew how to swing and jump off the rope that was tied to a branch that hung over the quarry. He was having so much fun hanging out and being with Jay.
I didn't realize how late we had stayed until my stomach grumbled. I was siting on the edge with my feet in the water. It was nice to have a little time to myself while Andy played with his new friend. I looked into the setting sky. We had spent the entire day out here without a care in the world. No wonder Jay lived out in the middle of no where. It was truly beautiful being surrounded by nothing but trees and the wildlife as neighbors. I looked over at the two splashing and playing. I smiled to myself, Jay would be a great father one day. He looked over and waved. I waved back and laughed as I saw Andy tackle Jay. They acted like brothers. Jay looked up as the sky was turning a beautiful red orange. He said something to Andy and they both took off, heading for me. Jay, of course, could easily beat Andy, but he allowed him to win. "Haha, I win, Jay! Do we really have to go home," he asked. Jay reached the shore and hauled himself up. He turned and stuck out his hand to help Andy. "Yes, little man, we got to head in. You don't want to be out here when it's dark. Trust me, I don't even want to be out here in the dark and I have night vision," he calmly replied. I grabbed Andy's towel and helped him dry off. "But, Jenny, why can't we stay? What's out here," he asked me. I looked up at Jay. He avoided my gaze. 'Weird. I wonder what is out here that could possibly scare a vampire into not coming outside at night.' I thought.
"Let's just get going, ok," he said as he looked up at the sky and then to the woods. He started walking towards the house without even a glance back to see if we were following. "Slow down, Jay," I called to him breathlessly. I had to jog to keep up with his pace. Suddenly there was a noise to my left. We all froze. I looked at the bush and when I felt the breeze I deemed the rustle of the leaves as merely the breeze changing. I began to walk again with Andy hugging my side. "Stop," Jay whispered to me. His eyes had gone to that fiery red. I watched as they searched the bush for any sign of movement. I looked back at the bush as Jay's eyes narrowed. There, right in the middle of the bush, was a pair of emerald eyes starring directly at Andy and me. We both screamed in unison and ran as fast as we could for the house which, thankfully, was only about a couple more yards. Jay was frozen still. I grabbed his arm, urging him to move. He didn't even flinch. The eyes were advancing towards us. I looked over my shoulder to see that Andy had made it inside safely. I turned my attention back to Jay and the eyes. The moon was high in the sky and it showed the figure as it approached. Saying that it was huge was an understatement. If it stood on its hind legs it would easily reach 7ft. Thankfully, it walked on four legs instead of two. "Werewolf," Jay hissed. I looked at him and then back at the thing approaching. It only made sense that it was one. No dog or wolf would be that size, well, no natural one could reach that size. It smelt the air and smirked. It seemed like it did, at least. "Vampire," it sneered. I stood there, frozen as they started a starring contest. They had clearly met before and weren't on good terms.
"Jen! Jay! Where are you two," my mom called. I looked towards the house and saw that she was dressed in a full black leather suit, loaded gun in hand. 'Damn, she's a badass,' I thought as my jaw dropped. She headed towards us, gun aimed and at the ready. I looked back at the contest and heard mom gasp. "Do not move. If you need to, use this," she said in my ear as she pressed another gun into my hand. I looked at the gun in my hand. I had never fired one, let alone held one. I knew what they could do, the destruction they could cause. She had already moved some distance away, trying to get a good opening and access the situation at hand.
I remember and audible 'pop' and the thing, werewolf, fell. I looked at my mom, her gun smoking. She walked over and pushed it with her boot. "Is it dead," I asked tentatively. She and Jay both looked at me. Finally registering that I was still standing there. "No, it's not dead. I mean, yes and no. More or less unconscious," Jay answered me. He whispered something to my mom which made her turn white as a ghost. She looked at me and then back at the werewolf. I could tell she was scared but she just shot a werewolf! How could she be scared? She walked over to me, clearly lost in thought. She gripped my upper arm and looked me in the eye, "Jen, there's a lot you don't know about me. Let's go inside. We have a lot to discuss."
