New State New Life

Day one

"Are you ready?!" Marie asked

"Yup. Are we eating first?" I asked

"Oh hell yeah. I'm starving and I don't want to stop on this drive" She said

"Cool. I like how we both got done early" I smiled

"Well my last class was a test so I got to leave when I was finished and you had a lab right?" Shed asked

"Yeah. Surgery lab. We did.. I already forget" I said

She laughed and we walked to the cafeteria. Scanning our I.D's we got into line and looked at what they had.

"Remember this has to last you a five hour ride" I said

"We have snacks" Marie laughed

I laughed and glanced at all the foods. Oh a fajita steak bowl, yup i'm getting that one. Once it was my turn, I asked for the bowl and watched as they filled a lunch room bowl with rice, peppers and steak.

"We have a creamy chipolte sauce, would you like some on top?" The lady asked

"Yes please" I replied

She drizzled a good amount on top of the bowl and handed it over to me. I smiled at her and walked over to the drinks. Grabbing a plastic cup, I got pink lemonade because why not and also a spoon and fork. Meeting back up with Marie, we found a table and sat down.

"Hello?" Marie said holding up her phone "We're eating lunch then heading out. Yeah it's raining here, not too bad though. I'm driving. That's what she said. Yeah, i'll text you when we leave. Probably at 12 on the dot so we'll be home around 5. Okay love you too"

"Parent?" I asked

"Yup. Even my mom said there's plenty of room on the ranch for you to tinker with your truck" She said shaking her head

I smiled and dug into my bowl. Marie got chicken parm and some side. We both devoured our food and debated on ice cream before making the walk back to our dorm and up to the room.

"Okay one last room check" I said

"Fridge has drinks and what we are drinking on our ride, i'll grab those." Marie said

"Any food is non perishable and in plastic containers because who knows what would try and get in" I said

"I'm not bringing any school work. f**k that. Bag on bed" Marie said

"I feel that" I replied

We both set our bags on our beds and did one more check before locking our door and going down to Marie's truck. I quickly ran over to mine and grabbed some things before getting in and giving her a smile.

"I'm excited, you're gonna have fun" She said

"I'm excited too" I replied

We spent the next five hours driving through a rain storm and chatting about her families farm. I've seen pictures of it and it's massive. Very pretty too. They've got cattle, chickens, goats, pigs, horses, and a few dogs. She also has a brother who she said may or may not be home. She didn't ask. Her brother is a year older then me and does most of the work on the ranch. But was going to college for engineering. His name is Connor. I think she said he works for his college too?

"We are almost there" Marie smiled

"Ooh it's so nice around here. Even in the rain" I said

"Move out here then. We have land on the ranch you can have a small piece" She said

"I wish. I'd move out here in a heart beat" I said

She looked at me then smiled and nodded. Hmm. Weird. After about half an hour we turned down a dirt road and passed by farm animals. And their house is f*****g huge. Jesus, no wonder she still lives at home.

"Jesus Christ" I said

"What" Marie laughed

"Your f*****g house" I nodded

She just smiled and pulled next to a somewhat old truck.

"Oh look. It's almost my trucks twin" I said

"That's Connors truck. I guess he's home too" Marie said

"Oh me and your brother might become friends. Unless he's a dough bag" I said

"I've seen you with the guys down at school.. Eh you might be friends" She laughed

I shook my head and we headed inside. I'll grab my bag later. Walking in the big grand farm housey door, I walked behind Marie and she went around the house. We came to the kitchen and there was a women in there.

"Hi mom" Marie said

"Oh hunny. Welcome home!" They women yelled "And you must be Rebecca"

"She likes to go by Becca but won't say anything" Marie said

"Yeah" I shyly said

Oh yeah, my people skills are s**t. I open up decently fast but at first it's like no.

"Well, Becca, welcome. Marie talks very highly of you." Her mother said

I smiled and Marie went right for the fridge.

"Huh, you do, do this at home too" I laughed

Her mother laughed as well and Marie just shot me a look. She grabbed two beers and placed one in front of me and we sat at the island.

"Long drive?" Her mom asked

"Yeah. Not as bad as it was when it snowed. But rain is a pain. Where are dad and the pain?" Marie asked

"The barn. They're working on something for your brothers truck." Her mom said

"See if you drove your truck you woulda been stuck with my brother the whole time" Marie laughed

I just shook my head and drank the beer. Marie and her mom chatted while I just listened or played on my phone.

"Well i'm going to start dinner. Do you want to give her the grand tour?" Her mom asked

"Yup. One beer in and we are ready for a tour" Marie smiled

I shook my head and handed her the empty bottle. She tossed them in recycling and showed me where the cans where. Then we went out front and grabbed our bags.

"Okay, we have a guest room that you will be in. It's next to Connor's room but you're a couple doors down from me. This is yours for the next week and a half. There is a bathroom down the hall so we all get to fight over it." Marie said

Looking around the room, it had a really cozy feeling. I might not leave. I don't need to finish school, they can just adopt me...at 23 years old. It's fine. Putting my bags down, I followed her out the door and she showed me the bathroom. Also very nice. And now we are going outside. Glad I wore work boots today. Going outside, the rain died down slightly and we walked over to a giant wooden barn, a well kept one at that. I've seen some run down ones back home but this one looks older then those but so much nicer.

"You are in awe" Marie laughed

"So nice" I laughed

"Well come meet my main man. Well a few" She said

I nodded and we walked into the barn. She walked up to a stall and a horse popped his head out while whinnying.

"This is my main man Rosco" Marie said

"He is a handsome man" I smiled

I walked over and rubbed his nose while she grabbed some treats.

"I thought I saw my girls truck outside" We heard

Marie looked up and smiled.

"Hi dad" She smiled

She walked away and I turned and saw an older man and a guy my age standing there. Yeah from Marie's posts that looks like her father and brother.

"Is that your friend?" Her dad asked after she hugged him

"Yup. Dad, Connor, that is my friend Becca. Becca, this is dad and Connor" Marie said

"Hi" I smiled

"How'd you talk this one into driving?" Connor asked

"Someone, wouldn't let me drive" I said

"Why?" Her dad asked

"Cause her truck is always broken" She laughed

"Yeah, it might not have even made the drive" I nodded

"What kind of truck do you have?" Connor asked

"78 Chevy K10" I said

"Oh s**t. That's what mine is" He said

"Nice" I smiled

He smiled back and I continued to pet Marie's horse.

"So what have you seen so far?" Her dad asked

"Uhm, the kitchen, room, bathroom and here" I laughed

"So I guess you two just got here" He smiled

"Yup. Rosco should get shown off first" Marie shrugged

"Have you ever been on a horse?" Connor asked

"Yeah. I rode back home a little. Worked on a farm or two as a ranch hand before I started school. That's about it" I replied

"So are we putting her to work?" Connor laughed

"Maybe" Marie said

She grabbed my hand and we continued on. She showed me all the horses they have and some of the other animals that were close to the barn. Also the two outside dogs. They're guardian dogs, so they watch over the live stock. They have their own houses outside they can get in and out of that keeps them out of the elements. It's honestly a very nice dog house.

"So uh. Is it actually a shed?" I asked

"Yeah. I did that. When I was younger I wanted them to have their own house so we build a shed and decked it out. The inside has dog beds and bowls and their own heating and air." Marie said

"Jealous" I smiled

"We have two more dogs that live inside. They might have been with my dad when we came in. They're probably inside now" She replied

I nodded and the rain started to pick back up. We headed back inside and I was greeted by two more dogs.

"Hello puppies" I smiled

"That is Willow and Ruger" Marie said

Willow is a chocolate lab and Ruger is a Shepherd. They are both wiggly and soft. Marie's dad and brother walked in and the two dogs went over to them.

"So, would you like to go relax. Since we never get to sit and do that at school" Marie asked

"Yes please" I laughed

"I might join you two. It's been a long day" Connor said

"Hunny go get washed. I'll have dinner done soon" Their mom said

He nodded and walked away. Marie started walking and I quickly followed. We went down a hall or two and came to a nice living room.

"So nice" I smiled

"Are you going to say that all week?" She laughed

"Of course" I chuckled

She shot me a look and turned on the tv. She scrolled through and eventually picked a show. Hawaii 5-0. I've seen this a handful of times.

"Have you ever watched this?" Marie asked

"A couple times. It's a cop show right?" I asked

"Yup. I think I binged this one break" She laughed

I laughed and we both relaxed on the couch and watched the show. Their dogs also joined us but laid on the floor. Connor eventually came into the room and sat on the one chair. Then Marie's phone rang.

"Ms. Popular" I laughed

"Hello" She said while making a face at me "How are you doing, yeah I got home a few hours ago. Yeah I could do that, my roommate came with me you think she can come up too? Yeah as a tech. Well she doesn't have a choice she's stuck here until I take her back. Okay. Yup see ya then"

Marie hung up and I looked over at her.

"So uh. Where am I going tomorrow?" I asked

"Oh that was my vet" I asked

"Why'd he call?" Connor asked

"Heard I was home, wanted me to come visit. I mean I only have a few weeks left of school then I graduate and start working there" She laughed

"Oh yeah. I forgot he snatched you up as soon as you started vet school" Connor said

"Snatched you up" I chuckled

They both looked at me and I just looked around.

"You're coming. You can see the place i've spent some overnights with the animals" Marie said

"Hey i've been there too" Connor added

"But were you in the back with them?" Marie said

"No" He sighed

"I didn't think so. Anyway, you're coming. Unless you want to be stuck with him"

I shrugged and listened the storm outside. It's getting louder. The one thunder made the dogs jump and soon their mom was calling us in for dinner. Marie shut the tv off and I followed them into the kitchen. They all sat down and I slowly sat in the open chair next to my friend. They passed around the dishes and we are having steak, corn and mashed potatoes. I'm okay with this. Especially because corn on the cob is the best.

"So what are your plans for your break?" Their mom asked

"Well tomorrow we are going to the clinic to say hi. And I'll probably get her on Blackjack" Marie said and smirked at the end

"Should I be scared" I asked

"Blackjack is a barrel horse. No one really rides him. Connor tried to use him for roping but he just likes to go." Their dad said

"Hunny you ride him when you move cattle" Their mom replied

"He knows I don't play" He said back

"Great" I sighed

"You'll be fine. I'm a vet" Marie said

"I do my own first aid 90% of the time" I laughed

"And mine" Marie replied

We all finished dinner and Marie's dad and brother headed outside to take care of the animals. I helped feed the two indoor dogs, then Marie and I went back to the living room. She laid on the couch this time and put her head on my lap. I like to play with people's hair so that's what I did. It's relaxing. I also started subconsciously braiding her hair, whoops.

"Whatcha doing there?" Connor said walking in

"Relaxing" Marie replied

"You good there... Becca right?" Connor asked

"Yup" I replied

"You two look exhausted" He laughed

We both nodded and I yawned. I am honestly ready for bed. It's only 8pm.

"You wanna call it early?" Marie asked

"Yeah" I laughed "I'm exhausted"

We both stood up off of the couch and I followed my friend to another room of the house. It looks like another living room. Maybe it's a family room. Or TV room. Either way, we said goodnight to her parents and headed up stairs. I used the bathroom before heading into the room that will be mine for the next week and a half.

"Goodnight girl. If you need anything i'm down the hall, you can't just yell now" Marie laughed

"Hey, you do that too" I chuckled

"I know. Connor is right next door but eh he's my brother. You wake up early so you'll have no problem getting the bathroom" My friend said

I shook my head and walked over to the bed. She shut the door and I pulled my clothes out. Then I heard a knock and the door opened.

"Oh and you can use that dresser so you're not fishing through your bag. It holds like sheets and stuff but my mom moved it for you" Marie said

"Thank you" I laughed

She nodded and shut the door again. Finding my pajamas, I put those on and threw my clothes in the hamper in the corner. She told me on the way here that I can use the hamper and we'll probably do our laundry before we go back. Mine as well. Walking over to the window, I pushed the curtain to the side and watch the lightning light up their farm. Jeez, it's cool to watch, but definitely not something i'm used to. Walking back over to my bag, I started taking my clothes out and putting them in the drawers. And I have just enough space, nice.

"Okay, i'm ready for bed" I laughed to myself.

Climbing into the bed I got under the covers and pulled my phone out. Sending my roommate a snapchat of the covers, I got one back of her room. So I sent one back of the drawer and said full. Checking my i********:, I posted a picture and put my phone face down on the night stand. I posted a picture of my truck, since it's my truck account. I don't exactly have a personal one anymore it got converted and I don't really take pictures of myself.
