I should have been celebrating, most people would scream, cry, or post a shaky selfie after learning they just made the Frostwell Wolves on their first day of training, the Frostwell Wolves one of the most competitive college hockey teams in the country.
But Me?
I was trying not to puke and collapse “House A” the assistant coach told me handing me a thick folder of rules I would probably break without even realizing It, the rules are too much “You are staying in Room 7 Don’t cause trouble” he warned before he left.
Room 7.... Mom said my father lived in Room 7 house A when he was here. My chest tightened as I looked at the folder in my hand the universe really had a twisted sense of humor I thanked him keeping my voice low and masculine before I headed toward the row of team houses behind the stadium.
The sun was already down, and the frost in the air made each breath sharper than the last,
By the time I reached House A a big cabin style building with loud voices inside I was shaking due to the cold, I rubbed my shaky hands together before I opened the door.
The door was unlocked, Typical athletes, immediately I stepped inside I was hit by the smell pizza.. beer and detergent. A half crushed beer can rolled across the floor as someone ran down the stairs yelling “Bro, stop touching my things”
Great, I just walked into a testosterone jungle, a few guys glanced at me, I recognized them from tryouts, they weren't looking at me like they recognized me though they were glaring at me as I walked towards the stairs.
One of them nodded “New kid you are in room 7 right?" He questioned I studied him before I nodded he looks like he is nice " it's upstairs Second door on the right.” he muttered before he turned and continued scrolling through his phone.
I thanked him quietly and climbed the stairs every creak of the stairs sending a shiver down my spine I located Room 7 in less than a minute.
My room, I opened the door and exhaled in relief before I turned on the room lights the room wasn’t big or tiny it was even but it was mine, and I am staying in it alone that's all that matters, the room barely had any furniture, there was a narrow bed, a desk, a closet and a bathroom.
I threw my bag on the bed and quickly locked the door behind me, although I am the only one staying in the room I can't risk leaving the door open someone might just walk in without knocking.
The binder was killing me,the sweat and the fear the constant awareness of my own body what it was and what it wasn’t allowed to be around here, I sat down on the bed before I removed the jersey, I slowly unwrapped the tight binds around my torso and sucked in a full breath for the first time today.
My ribs throbbed... But I had to endure the pain it would probably stop hurting this much once I took a hot shower I dragged my feet to the bathroom and stepped into the shower, letting the hot water beat against my sore muscles, rinsing away the anxiety, the lies and the constant worry someone would knock on the door and drag me out.
When I stepped out wrapped only in a towel, I stared at myself in the foggy mirror, this wasn’t the version of me that my mom wanted but
It was the version I needed to be for him.
For my father and for the truth.
I changed into an oversized shirt and shorts, tied my short hair back tightly before slipped into the bed, the sheets were cold, the pillow lumpy but hell… I was exhausted and sleepy I slowly closed my eyes and just when I was starting to drift off when I heard it.
A sound, it was soft at first a breathy feminine whimper.I opened my eyes furrowing my brows then it came again louder this time “Oh...Zayden… yes…” I froze My heart dropping straight into my stomach.
No..no way I pressed my face into my pillow, silently cursing. But the walls in this house were as thin as paper so every sound traveled like it had a path carved through the wall, I pressed the pillow against my ears slowly closing eyes again then a low deeper commanding voice rumbled next.
It was him... It was his voice Zayden, my room is next to his?I groaned into my blanket “Seriously? On my first night?” I am so exhausted and they won't even let me sleep in peace the girl’s moans got louder, the sound of the bedframe hitting the wall echoing in my room.
Zayden's voice dropped to a rough growl that sent goosebumps up my arms, I squeezed my eyes shut my cheeks burning... They were the ones doing the shameful thing while I am the one being embarrassed.I definitely shouldn’t be listening.... But I can't ignore it "ahh I hate this" I bit out, I absolutely hate this.
I hate the way something warm flickered in my chest when I heard him murmuring things I couldn’t quite catch I rolled onto my back staring at the ceiling like it could save me “Great” I whispered “Just great” as if the universe wasn’t done tormenting me, the headboard slammed again shaking my wall.
I angrily groaned into my hands. This was my first day in the house, and I already knew two things:
1. These walls had no insulation whatsoever.
2. Zayden Frost had no shame, none, zero percent.
I angrily grabbed my pillow and shoved it over my ears, but even then....I could still hear him. That deep voice, that authority, that rough controlled arrogance that's probably what made half the campus girls chase him.
It was going to be a long night, a very long night and all I could think as I lay there, wide awake, listening to Zayden and that girl ruin any chance of sleep was, how the hell am I supposed to survive living next to him?
